This is the old Hooes road country store. You got to be a really old Fairfax county kid to remember this place.

I remember it starting out as the King's Table, or Knights Table, or something along those lines. It had a little drawbridge inside the front door leading into the dining area. I'm pretty sure at one point it was the Tom Weston's Anglers Inn.

Would this store have turned into Add A Lite Glass circa 1979? Was it opposite Citgo Drive/lawnmower repair/7-11 (those were there in 79)? I do remember those little houses hanging around for a very long time, maybe into the early 80s?

The abandoned larger house next to the Citgo-Mobil was used as a haunted house for at least two years.

Great selection of old iron - Here is my guess:

1963 Lincoln Continental

1968 VW Bug

1966 Chevrolet Impala Station

1966 Ford Mustang

1966 Ford Falcon

1967 Buick Electra 225

Thanks Fran

1 out of 6 cars was a VW in the early 70s, according to a reliable source. The challenge - should you choose to accept it - is to confirm there was the same ratio in the 60s.

This one is from Prince William. Old postcard from the Stone house inn which was located next to the Stone house at Manassas Battlefield park. It seems the National Park service razed the Stone house inn shortly after the land for the battlefield park was taken by eminent domaine. This NPS web page mentions the Stone house inn.

That might give us some clues as to the date of the picture.

It is not Tysons. Tyson's Herman's was at 8204 Leesburg Pike, Vienna, VA 22182, where a PetSmart is now located.

As a store that sold handguns until 1973 when Fairfax County passed a ordinance that required a 3 day wait, because of that Herman's found it a hassle as the persons who handled the paperwork were the ones on the license and they stopped selling handguns just like Sports Authority and others and shortly went out of business just like Sports Authority and others

DAJAX No it s not Tysons That building had a roof like a Safeway me thinks

Ahh Hermans the blue steel and nickel Smiths that they had !

Hermans demise was Clark Brothers boom , no 3 day wait out that way in Opal Va on Rt 29 buy a handgun and a box of cartridges and targets and walk out back into the Wild West shooting galley that was their range back then...Range Check ...Boom Boom Forget it maybe 20 minutes later.. But no creepy killers were shooting up schools or killing people in mass back then .

People were much more mellow despite the turbulent 60's and early 70s and all the young males by 75 mostly had long hair most everyone was into music of some kind called Hi Fidelity or stereo and 8 track tapes. My favorite group was Texas Pete and The Tumbleweeds No long hairs on me by 73

So Hermans went out of business by 80 ..close enough

According to:

Herman's went out of business in 1996. I know the Springfield Mall store was still there in 1980, when I graduated.

I can confirm that Herman's is across from the Eden Center in Seven Corners, in the same strip mall than now houses Guitar Center, (Fidel) Castro's Bakery and Gold's Gym. There used to be a Bennigan's in there back in the day, too.

Too bad the old Olympus Gym across the street behind Eden Center closed down. That was the place to be back in the '90s with an unknown Batista AKA Dave Bautista and King Kamali training among a crazy cast of characters.

That looks to be a Ford Capri. Ford made them for the European market starting in 1968.

Bet that is a military family living there because many U.S. Army officers brought home VWs and other import autos.

Maybe it was some sort of shaded area for the ponies to hang out.

If parades are your thing, the City of Fairfax has videos of their parades going back to 1985. Not quite as historic as Fran's photos, but '85 was a long time ago for some of us! https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL795EDF1B366CCC9F

Not changed much since then. Which is a surprise. A lot of that neighborhood has been McMansioned.

Minor clarification: The picture is taken from Giles Place, but the parade was on Highland.

Mexican restaurant. It was rather small. Very good food, traditional fare, low prices too. I remember it from back in the early 80s. I'm pretty sure it was there a few years prior to that. Occasionally they had cactus with rice and beans on the menu. Most people passed it by, due to the location and outward appearance. It helped if one could speak Spanish when ordering, but it wasn't absolutely necessary. The food was excellent, prepared in a home cooked style, nothing fancy, and cheap.

Tijuana Jail, I hadn't thought of that place in years!!!!

My friend worked for the phone company (C&P) and knew all the best little hole in the wall places that the guys in the field told him about.

Also see Dixie Pig, Mike's Italian Restaurant, and Shakey's on that list -- RIP.

Good lord. how does the Postal Service do it? I cannot make out the City or State on that post card. No wonder they do not bother teaching cursive to kids anymore. And can someone tell me about the hotel phone number SOuth 5-6100? What would you dial?

Great post card of the Harry Smith sent in 1952 to Cincinnati Ohio. I was able to get a pic of the house it was sent to 67 years ago.

Prior to 1962 only the largest cities had zip codes and they were just two digits. The zip code for Cincinnati was 38.
