Even as a very young child, I wondered,
"Why does God need a starship?"

(The answer is that the reindeer only work on Christmas.)

The other classic question is:
"How can Santa be in multiple shopping centers at once"?
Answer (1): "Magic" (same as all God-related questions)
or (2): "Most of those are just Santa's helpers, not real Santa?"

"So you mean I'm getting gyped by sitting on the lap of a false Santa?"
"Is it some kind of demi-god lower Santa? Or Mr. Pervie from down the block?"

Mall Santas serve a key function: This is how young kids learn that
Santa isn't real, adults will lie and lie to you, and that it would
be nice of you to lie along for the sake of the littler children."

This is followed by: So how much of that Jesus stuff is like Santa?

Santa really IS Satan!
The light bearer, the truth and the way.

All Hail Satan!
Ho HO HO!!!!

Sully Station photo is probably from the late '80s -- that's a 1988-90 Ford Escort in the foreground.

Based on the escort in the photo, which is a 1989 I believe, would have to be that year at the earliest. There’s some good jalopies in the picture.

The price of the gas is 20 something per gallon, the smudge pots, and the car on the very right of the photo makes me guess mid 1960's

The last time I can remember seeing smudge pots being used for traffic safety is around 1968. They were replaced the battery powered amber flashing lights mounted on steel sawhorses.

Smudge pots are collector items and can be found on ebay.

That Wonder Bread bakery/outlet store was on Seminary Road just off Carlin Springs Road. We used to go there in the 60's to get pies, cupcakes, and bread at a discount.

Nearby was a Toys R Us, a Coca-Cola bottling plant on Seminary, a Krispy Kreme on King Street. Good times for a kid!

I'm thinking its the Old Pappy Parker's chicken place -- Marriot. It became a Roy Rogers and now is a MacDonalds. Corner of Leesburg Pike and Carlin Springs Road across from the vacant Toys R Us building in the Baileys Crossroad/Skyline area.

The curved dome roofed building might still be there.

I'm usually driving past the place trying at a good clip to attempt to miss being stopped at that light so I haven't made a good perusal of the area...

Sleepy,

To me it looks like the building is still under construction and we're just missing the installation of the sign to let us know what it is. Is that a Help Wanted sign in the window? Also it looks like there is some stuff in the back of the building re construction materials. I do remember the restaurant had "curb service" precursor to the drive up window.

It might have been a Hot Shoppes Jr. in its first iteration. Young Blanche wasn't making any restaurant decisions for the family -- we usually went to the Hot Shoppe at Bailey's Crossroads or the Hot Shoppe Cafeteria in the Nassif Building near Columbia Pike and Carlin Springs Road when we went out to eat after church.

The Good Old Days indeed!

I grew up in Fairfax and did not spend a huge amount of time in Falls Church but I don't think it was HS jr. What is that big building to the right?? There is a picture of HS jr somewhere in this thread, I will try to find it for comparison.

Boy, that Hostess shop brought back some memories. My mom was/is quite frugal, and would never get the Hostess pies that we loved because they were too expensive. But she would allow us to go nuts in that place, and we would pick up about 20 at a time to last the month.

I had completely forgotten about that, and doubt I would’ve remembered if I hadn’t seen the photo. Thanks to you and everyone else here for contributing.

Seems to me that people are confusing two or three different things.

I have never seen this construction photo before but I think it's #1.

1. The first ever Roy Rogers, on the corner of RT 7 and Carlin Springs Rd.

The curved structure in the photo looks similar to the hangar-like
self-storage facility that is still there. (Missing are the two
other buildings on Leesburg Pike, but I do think this is the place.)

The drive-in movies was on the opposite (north) side of the street
(same side the photographer is standing on) but it was a little
farther to the east of here. It is a shopping center across from Skyline.
That is to say, movies was across the street from the airport.
Rather, this photo was taken from the Shell gas station right
across the street, which has been there a long time.

I think this is the place that was originally "The UFO" drive-in.
Perhaps that is what is being constructed in the above photo.
It is currently a McDonalds.

Note that this is Bailey's Crossroads, next to the airport (Skyline),
NOT Seven Corners.

2. The Hot Shoppes Jr. in Seven Corners as pictured second.
It's on RT 7 next to Sleepy Hollow Road.
It is currently a laundromat.
Everything about it and next to it looks exactly the same today!

3. There was also a full-scale Hot Shoppes right in Bailey's Crossroads,
pretty much on the footprint of the Best Buy (in shopping center
between RT 7 and Columbia Pike). It closed relatively recently.

4. Unrelated. BAILEY'S CROSSROADS. German Gourmet is still open
at 5838 Columbia Pike (that's around the corner from the Best Buy).
Gifford's ice cream was right next door and is now a dry-cleaners.
There were also some other places, across the street from them,
all being totally redeveloped and I don't remember what.
There was an office building that just came down.
Further west was a funky angular building that was a chain
that I think was hamburgers, later pizza, most recently "Palenque"
(there's another, still standing, in Springfield as "El Paso").
I guess the last thing to mention here is the Krispy Kreme
aka Black Eye Peas, today's "City Diner".

5. Unrelated: SEVEN CORNERS. Howard Johnson's on RT 50 (in the triangle
with E. Broad Street), now Pistone's Italian Inn.

5. Unrelated: ArLINGTON. There was also a Hot Shoppes in Arlington, on Columbia Pike and Walter Reed drive, turned into Bob's Big Boy.
There was a Red Barn on the corner of S. George Mason Drive and Columbia Pike (building stands at Penske Truck Rental).
Brenner's Bakery was at Glebe Road and Columbia Pike, and is currently
a little sandwich shop next to Boston Market and auto parts.

The Bob's Big Boy was near the corner of Leesburg Pike and Jefferson Street. Its currently (well as of the last time I paid attention) a Peruvian chicken place -- Edy's?

Not to be confused with "The Chicken Place" across
the street on RT 7. Saying "chicken place" in the
first quarter of this century is like saying "by the 7-11"
in the 20th century. One about every 50 feet.
The coming runner-up is "hookah place".

Burger Delight was at the corner of Edsall Road and Pickett in Alexandria. I think that was too off the beaten path to be a Marriott operation. It catered to the industrial area that is now being gentrified since that area is "close" to the Van Dorn metro.

Valle's was in Springfield on Commerce on the mall side of the road, as opposed to the Super Slide/Fisher's Hardware side. Its now some sort of long-term hotel (perhaps something Marriott connected).

Blanche worked there summers during college -- you cannot believe the amount of employee thief of food at that place. I can't believe it lasted as long as it did before becoming Blackie's south and was it Deja Vu?

You have a good memory. I remember it now but wouldn't have otherwise.

It was never anything other than a small stand-alone burger joint mostly serving the warehouses and other businesses. Ate there a few times. One of my first jobs, as a 14 year old kid too young to work legally, was at the Global Van Lines moving company on the other side of Van Dorn. They hired us at the end of summer when college kids had to go back to school before we did.

Valles Later Became Blackies in Springfield. Burger Delight never was a Hot Shoppes. It was a copy of the Weenie Beanie off 395 in Arlington and Benjamin's
In Newington across from Alban Tire . All three had the same yellow menu bords with very similure items like the famous Royal Hamburgers that a couple thousand joints coast to coast have. The same owner may have owned at least two of the places

For many White folks. Black folks in the 50's were mostly very poor. But there were many very poor whites and blacks in Appalachia then as well the entire south. At least it was a lot more simple then today, no internet or computer and California was the Golden State with the good life that was there paying the best wages. Of course all you had to do on some nights was listen to grass grow.. NOT TO SMOKE IT !

That's only the tip of the iceberg . No tape decks other then reel to reel that were not as good as they became. No Hi-Fi even, no transistor radios

The photo is showing the construction of a brick and block wall. It was a work in progress, and I am sure it came out as a good looking finished project.

Its too bad there isn't a little bit more in this picture. Parking for employees of National Airport which is north of the picture? The buildings in the background look like they might be some thing that would help with running the airport.

I worked just up Rte 1 from Quickee, at Neabsco Road. We used to grab lunch there

You can pin down the location even today: it was immediately south of the high-voltage lines coming from the Possum Point VEPCO power plant.

Interarms. Wasn't across the street but in warehouses a little south. Arms sales to/from foreign governments and others was basically its business model so not all that shady. It was THE largest private arms dealer in the world at the time.

https://unblinkingeye.com/Guns/Interarms/interarms.html

Closer to the Torpedo Factory was Potomac Arms/Hunter's Haven on the water at the end of Prince Street where some of their surplus was sold to the general public. Later they also had a separate retail store for a little while where they sold higher quality guns that they were importing.

PotomacArms.jpg

I remember when you could buy those old guns for near nothing there. They had crates and crates full. As well as tons of other real military surplus stuff. Somebody used an anti-tank gun that they bought there in the 60s to blow through a wall and rob a bank. lol Think the blowback from that ended sales of most of the heavy duty stuff. AKs and SKS were like $75. Cheaper if you wanted the beat up ones stuffed into barrels. Still have an old Walther that I bought there and some others.

One of my fav places to look around . I got a couple pieces there myself both good deals.

Then later to Radio Free Italy when they had the pizza and pasta salad buffet on the second level of the mezzanine about 6 dollars at lunch with ice water and 2 dollars tip dirt cheap and way good . Sad to see all those smaller places go to put that other place in Ive never spend a dime in. A Korean had Larrys Cookies there about 1989 when they first opened the food court I got some cookies and Ice cream from him time to time, very few customers then and I felt sorry for him, 5 years later he was going to the bank by the hour, one hard working man and his family to realize the true American Dream through work and business, Ill spare you the rest of my bitchfest of some newcomers today LOL!
