Mid 1980's is about right. Remember when the Texaco was Munday's Esso?

I rarely stopped there at the Texaco / Esso too hard to get in. I went now and then to the Amoco gas station owned by Bobby Stevens when I passed thru that area . He was or still is a local Fairfax area businessman who later owned a septic tank cleaning service he would be in his 80s by now. The Amoco station was there as a gas station at least a long time and it was at the corner up at the beginning or end of the Fairfax "bypass" on 236 across from that old historical home once owed by judge Rothrock which I was told at the station way back. The gas station was torn down to become one of Fairfax City's latest parking lots maybe 10 years back now

Not the day of the Bailys building collapse however I thought that was what the pic was as I see what looks like brown dust or smoke in the left of the pic

2 You Tube videos with vintage Fairfax Bailys scenes of this tragedy taken by channel 9 . I went up there for a look it happened on Friday March 2, 1973 at 2pm 14 died . Maybe that dust was construction there or removal of the debris

One of my earliest memories is going to the Mason Library that was located on Annandale Road -- where the Vacuums Unlimited and the Springfield School of Beauty are currently located.

I don't remember the PIZZA sign, but I don't remember eating pizza until Shakey's.

The Horn and Horn and the Shakey's building picture -- that was after the Old Spaghetti Mill left the building, prior to the Magills.

Oh the rectangular pan of pizza with all the cheese on it with the classic topping half pepperoni and the other half sausage, the pitchers of beer, the original NOVA pizza parlor style pizza so many enjoyed as kids after BRYC baseball football subdivision swim meets and family get togethers, the subs..the ice tea the sodas..the fries..the fun..

Chesapeake Bay Seafood Houses across NOVA, what a marketers dream name so simple so "Catchy" LOL

Yes the menu has been posted maybe 6 times here but the memories are still there and you must be reminded, the bowls of seafood, fries the slaw with some pickle relish in it the hush puppies the beer in pitchers, eat it all and then you could reorder unless you slipped the waitress a 5 spot right off the bat or she was your sister GF or wife

Many did as I ,ordered the AYCE steamed spiced shrimp as the AYCE crab legs were just a bit too much out of the wallet unless you were splurging, then endless shrimp and everything else cheaper till you were stuffed

Oh the bowls of steamed spiced shrimp with the aluminum foil across the tops when served , getting spicier and spicier after each order, requiring more and more beer to wash them down... Oh the money flowing into the registers

I quit after the 2nd order thanks No DWI's for me

Sorry No recreated pics of hush puppies and the Hobo beer I already washed them down, none left

Back then, before I had a car, my world was defined by which pool we belonged to...

This is that Wakefield Chapel Area...then, off to Poe, world gets a little bigger, and, kids that lived like two blocks (that neighborhood didn't really have "blocks", so just another way of saying "pretty close"), kids that lived two blocks "the other way" that I'd never met, simply because they belonged to a different pool.

Then, off to Lake Braddock, or Woodson, or Annandale...the world got much bigger, and its like we were one big neighborhood...but, still defined by which pool you belonged to as a kid.

This is the building located on Annandale Road a little north of the intersection of Little River Turnpike, Ravensworth, and Annandale Roads in, wait for it, Annandale. It still looks a lot like this.

No doubt there were little shopping centers in the area that looked like this, but as previously posted -- this was the original incarnation of the George Mason Library of the FPCL system.

I am thinking even the late 80's is too late. Early 80's maybe? I think Best had already changed the color scheme on that store by 1990. I could be totally wrong though....wouldn't be the first or last time!!!

Not so fast there. I have a pretty good guess on the year, and location of this picture.

I put the year at the summer of 1969 because the Cougar is a 1969, and is displaying the old Virginia plates.

I put the location on King Street/ Rt. 7 in the Fairlington area - Heading N NW direction.

Notice the White Arlington Co. street signs on the right side of the picture, and the green Alexandria street sign on the left.

Rt 7 straddles the boarder in a few areas, but the surrounding homes look to be the Fairlington area.

Just my guess.

About 1969 with the Safeway and rental center in the background a long time ago as hardly anyone fixes auto radiators anymore a few custom places for antique cars do exist here and there in the USA today. I got a few repairs done at that shop but the last one was more then 12 years ago. Todays trade is radiator replacement as they are cheaper with plastic side tanks and not worth the time to try to repair

The picture with the cones and the parade is on 29 looking Northbound or Eastbound. The Quarry Inn sign is visible, as is the tool rental place that is still in business. There is a small bridge over Tripps Run creek nearby.

Didn't know but there was a Safeway where Coleman Powersports is. There was once a catalog store there, I think it was Best or W. Bell and Co. can't remember which one.

If you really squint, I think you can see a Hechinger sign on the left. I think that place burned down. Target there now.

Tell me that does not look like a scene from a movie about nuclear war. Mom takes the kids to the park after hearing on the radio that everyone has 15 minutes to live. Kids playing on the teeter totter while mom contemplates life, and then there is a flash of light......

Historic Imagery shows the gas station in the 1953 photo and the barn in the background in the 1960 photo (there was a barn there earlier but appeared to be different style). Both the gas station and barn were gone in the 1976 photo.

Take heart it will never happen with President Trump in office, but as soon as a weak loud mouth socialist Democrat is elected president promising unlimited welfare open borders and free shit for votes it could come in the darkest hour of the night. Its only a 3 minute ICBM ride from offshore Ocean City out in the Atlantic canyons to NOVA …

After 2020 sleep tight if you vote right . No socialist Weaklings are ever needed for POTUS! You can't get welfare weed abortions or illegals entering the USA for votes when your nothing but vapor in the universe ! Weak Democrats 4 main needs today.

As a long timer, almost 50 years in Burke. I like this long running thread with the nostagia, photos. and memories. It's one of the few threads that isn't polluted by politics. How about keeping it that way? There are only a million other places to rant and voice one's political passions. It's so tiresome when politics get inserted into apolitical subject matter. Can't we just enjoy the photos and any related discussion, without it turning into every other thread on this site....

That’s a great old picture AR. Thx.

I’m guessing the photographer is facing east on 50 and the gas station is on the north side of 50, east side of Waples Mill. The barn getting close to where Giant was on 50 and Jermantown. Am I right? /cic

The Massey Building was built in 1969.

This photo is early 1970's so that is not the Massey Building being erected.

I think it is the building marked as Fairfax County Magistrate. From the Historic Imagery site it was constructed between 1976 and 1980 and was the only thing on that azimuth from the Fairfax Building that was multistory.

It was the only high building there in that direction in 1969-70-75-until they built the new courthouse the Jennings Building in 1982, The Massey has an annex but that's very low it was the heath dept way back when we stood in long lines in the front for the county tags then stickers

It was named for a Fairfax County Executive named you guessed it Mr.Massey. Jennings was the chief circuit court judge who had a grudge against issuing concealed handgun permits. In 1987-88 only 3 people had one in Fairfax, one was good old Lt Col Ollie North USMC. Jennings would not even issue permits to former or retired police officers. Because of Jennings grudge against lawful citizens and former cops and their personal self defense the General Assembly took away the circuit court judges discretion to issue the permits statewide and made the permits Shall Issue to law abiding citizens in 1995, a good thing that happens when you have zealots on the bench and good people in the Va state house.

That looks like a 1967 Ford Country Squire at the front of the line of cars. If it lacks the fake wood on the side, it's a Country Sedan.

Amazing how they demolished the whole thing and started over, donk.

There are so many money metal Ethiopian restaurants in that area. Some strip malls have more than one, rickies.

It's a show.

Thanks to Daiana Bañales-Dorman for this picture she took at Annandale high school the day that the fuel tanker truck on the beltway struck the 236 overpass and exploded. I think this was in 1978 but I'm not sure. I remember the traffic was messed up at that interchange for months.

That has happened twice at that location. First time in the mid 1970's, and the second time about 1989.

That interchange is well done.

In Fairfax on Rt 50 by Fairfax High and Van Dorn Street in Alexandria near the beltway

Any other places in Nova. They went out of business here I think in the early 90's . Maybe earlier they came here about 1978. The prime rib and steaks were good there

Have to disagree. If you look at the building under construction the dimensions of the floors put it further away than the garage structure. Also, the garage would have been built as a complete structure not in little segments; ie the garage takes up the entire gap between buildings where the building under construction occupies only a portion of that space.

If you look at today's photo of the same building, at the same angle, the Massey building is not visible. It was another structure being erected.

No shit. It was previously determined to not be the Massey building. I already said it is the building currently being used by the Fairfax County Magistrates office. It is not the Massey building and it is certainly not the parking garage.

That garage was built long after when the fist pic was taken and it was a concrete job not steel the Massey is only 100 feet on each side 196 feet tall from the bottom entry floor the only buildings in that direction were the Massey and its low annex both built in 1969 and a little house on Page Ave near the old courthouse
