The GM training center parking lot has a few early 1960's Chevrolets, so my guess is 1961 or 1962.

This landmark on the W&OD at Hunter Mill Road/Hunter Station Rd. is gone. It was built in the 1930s. It was torn down by early January with a new building now under construction.

From this angle it looks to be the parking lot of the Three Chefs. Possible?

Its the parking lot across Annandale Road from the 3 Chefs -- now Bentleys. The little shopping center that has Present, the JK Bar, and the 31 Flavors, and previously the Jefferson Theatre.

The diddy I remember went, "McDonalds is you kind of place, Hamburgers in your face, French Fries between your toes, Dill Pickles up your nose and don't forget those Chocolate Shakes come from Suburban Lakes (?) McDonalds is your kind of place."

Not sure I got the last part right. But, man, that was a LONG time ago! Thank you for the memory! Ha!

I remember it. The diddy still comes to mind but when I try to sing it, all I have is: “McDonald’s is your kind of place... french fries in your face... hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm...” which is still wrong, if you are right.

Found this:

“This little ditty was one of my mother’s favourite songs to sing me when I was small and I know it went around the circuit in the 1970s but there are several versions of it out there–

McDonald’s is My Kinda Place
(this is the version we howled at in the car)

McDonald’s is my kinda place
They serve you rattlesnakes
French fries between your toes
Dill pickles up your nose
The last time I was there
They fried my underwear
McDonald’s is my kinda place – Your kinda place!

OR : McDonald’s is your kind of place
They serve you rattlesnakes
French fries between your toes
Hamburgers up your nose
The last time that I was there
They served my underwear
They served it medium rare
I told them I didn’t care
(it was my dirty pair)

OR: McDonald’s is your kind of place
Hamburgers in your face
French fries between your toes
Dill pickles up your nose
And what about those shakes?
Made from polluted lakes!
McDwarfle’s is your kind of place…

McDonald’s is your kind of place
Hamburgers in your face
French Fries between your toes
Hot pickles up your nose
And don’t forget their Martian shakes
They come from outer space
McDonald’s is your kind of place.

McDonald’s is my kind of place
Cheeseburgers in your face
French fries up your nose
mustard between your toes
The last time that I went there
they stole (my/person’s name) underwear
McDonald’s is the place for me!”

I don't believe we've seen this angle in the photo at Tyson's Corner.

The Tysons Meat Locker plant would be to the photographer's back in the above photo -- has anyone posted a picture of the meat locker, with the animals on the side of the building, anyone???

Thanks for this photo. The traffic lights -- so quaint!

The picture of the Crossroads Market that I always see was taken from across 123 looking towards where 495 is now located.

Just like yesterday, except our version went-

McDonalds is your kind of place
They feed you rattlesnakes
They stick french fries up your nose

They get them at polluted lakes

To McD's in Norfolk Va in the 60's hamburgers were 15 cents 18 for cheeseburgers 10 and 15 cent fries 10 15 25 cent drinks . My usually order was a cheeseburger 15 cent fry and a 15 cent orange soda. I arrived by bicycle as all youths did back then. The first KFC I went to was there too and I loved it ,still the same taste but way too salty for me today and it did not seem to be as greasy

All that said Hey Jack come on back Jack with those in the Box tacos Arthur Treachers too, no Fanta needed , 7-11 next door with ice cold ones and a brown paper bag 3 Chefs ya we still miss you, Dixie Pig too with Blondie (Ruth) bring me another beer !

Why did homes back then (and even today) build with basements instead of a second floor?

It's got to be cheaper (or even the same) to build a second floor instead of digging down for a basement, right?

Think about...basically, the exact same house in terms of materials, but instead of digging down, you are putting it on the ground, and building from there...

Yeah, you'd probably need to add a bathroom or two, but still, isn't that cheaper than digging down?

With the landscape in NOVA many split foyer 2 story homes were built back in the 60's as that's the cheapest way to build a 2 story house when there's a hillside on the property. A 2 story on a crawlspace is more expensive then a 2 story on a cement slab and a 2 story with a dug out basement is more then that. Crawlspace homes and the traditional 2 story home with a basement are more comfortable in hot or cold weather then any cement slab 1 or 2 story home and easier to remodel the 1st and 2nd floors with new baths or kitchens

All said that was NOVA in the late 60s and before, Today the Mc Mansions are the only thing built in NOVA because of the cost of the land

Now that you mention it, I think they were 50 cents. I remember hoarding mine for weeks, counting and refiguring what I was going to buy with them. I think I finally went with straight cheeseburgers, like 4 of them. Mom just shook her head but I got my burgers. Good memory.

That's not 1972, in 1972 the biggest building across from Tysons on 123 was the Tysons Holiday Inn, the pits were right behind it . I will date that pic early 80's or very late 70's as I don't see the "Flashcube" building on Rt 7 with the Rusty Scupper Fern bar and dopey Mod Squad 70's clothes LOL DAJAX

That building is on RT 7 and the street address is 8150.

I don't see the Dick Herriman Ford that opened in 1968 or JKJ Chevrolet complete with barber shop and laundry mat that opened around 1973.

The microwave tower can be seen.

Guess it would still be a few years until they built the K-Mart in Tyson's Corner.

If we could only see what is playing at the Annandale Theatre (RIP), it would help us determine the date of the picture.

Thanks Andy for this picture and the BEST in Shirlington.

Little Blanche was so scared of walking over the grates that were in the sidewalks when store was Landsburgh's. She also played "sales lady" at the store by tearing off the second part of the perforated tags on dresses. Mom was not pleased when I got caught...

My guess is 1971. F Stop was moved to the bottom of the Potomac River to be a tourist attraction , it did not last long as VW's were more watertight cheaper and better for that purpose . The field it stood in was a popular place to catch rats for feeding 7 foot pet western diamondback rattlers some kept as pets like a fellow known as DAJAX

Dajax, you used to have a pet diamondback rattlesnake?

Awesome. Eastern DB's are actually bigger snakes than Westerns, BTW.

The perspective on this photo is really compressing the distances.

There's Jack In The Box on the other side of John Marr Drive there.

The F/Stop UFO is not close to PEP Boys; it's at the edge of
a fairly large parking lot.

By 1976, construction was almost complete on the near field,
which today is 7137 Little River Turnpike that had the
"Ara" restaurant. This was Bob's Big Boy.

Sometime in the mid 2000s the structure got a large
addition on the east which today is "Tandoori Nights".

For a period in the 1990s there was another long N-S structure
immediately on the edge of the lot where the UFO is.
It was turned into parking and now corresponds to where
the brick fencing is, and even today there is more construction
going on there (lot blocked off, steel frame on the west).

Way directly behind the F/Stop in 1976, at the south end,
are a couple of (co-joined?) buildings. Today that's where
"Happy Billiards". "Red Holic", and "Cafe Chocolate" are now.
At the same time, on the other side of the field, there is a
larger building which today is McGill's pizza buffet.

I remember going to Shakeys, which existed at the time of
this photo (that is, before 1976). And there in the photo
is our beloved Shakey's sign. That means that Shakey's
was one of those two buildings. But was it the west or
east building in the back there? I have a recollection
of two things. First, if you inside McGills today, it is
exactly as I remember Shakeys. Second, is a vague
recollection that Shakey's moved locations.
Another piece of the puzzle that I have forgotten is
the location of Old Spaghetti Mill in all of this.
Does anyone recall the story?

1980 Historical Imagery shot of Rt.236 and John Marr. Looks like the F-Stop is still in the parking lot.

Let me see if I can get this right.

As I recall the Old Spaghetti Mill was behind Jack in the Box and Pep Boys on small rise, but still had a RT 236 address

>First, if you inside McGills today, it is exactly as I remember Shakeys.

I remember that Shakey's as a long room running parallel to 236 inside the wooden tables went in the same direction and the ragtime piano man in red white striped shirt and straw hat on the far right side .The entrance was to the middle. I could be wrong as too many brain cells went south with a bite from my pet rattler and the cheap ice cold beer they served there in the mid 70's. I hope it was not Schlitz but maybe it was, after 3 they all taste good.

I sucked out the venom all it did was make me meaner . I already knew rattlesnake was white meat and tasted like chicken and so did that snake LOL

That Shakey's was always filled up with happy people good times there for sure and the pizza was good to. It was where I first had the pineapple Hawaiian pizza.

It looked like the one at the bottom of the pics to my recollection with another building next to it. Its been remodeled from when it was built The pics not Annandale BTW The menu is from 1970 prices were just a bit higher in the mid 70's and one more Annandale pic that's most likely been put up on FXU 100 times LOL I did resize it a lil but left it large to see it well. It was taken in 1965

DAJAX No Never Went In The Spaghetti Mill there or Penguin Feather or The Truckers Stop wherever they were at around there. I've told you I was a long haired republican redneck and they would not let me in there but they would let me in to Hunters Lodge as long as long I kept quite around the older women 30 some there that the 30 some construction workers from Manassas Park were after LOL

I think the door was on the left, and everything else like you said.
Particularly, the loooong kitchen assembly line was on the left,
perpendicular to 236, and you went over there to watch them make it.
And that's exactly what McGills looks like.

(Or maybe your "door in the middle" means "kitchen takes up a lot
of room on the left, and door is just west of the kitchen.
In the leftmost place you can be, without being IN the kitchen".
Or maybe Just don't remember, either!)

However, it would not surprise me if Shakey's was originally
in those other, back-east buildings rather than the back-west.
Surely they would have remodeled to the standard Shakey's layout.

I think Old Spaghetti Mill had a giant wooden mill wheel on the
side near its entrance. Whatever building that was in.

I am amazed I can't remember certain details.

I am pretty sure I also sometimes went to a Shakey's
somewhere near Tysons Corner. (Traditionally after
attending the "Explorer" group at Honeywell.)
I have zero recollection of where that was.
I just remember the pizza and my friends there.

I'm remembering that the OSM was originally a grocery store that didn't last long -- Kroger? It was closer to John Marr and behind the First Virginia Bank Building that fronted Backlick Road at 236.

Love the picture of the Annandale Theatre construction. That huge tract of trees that ended up being filled with the various stores/building that we have been talking about lately.

Many good times at the Shakey's especially after marching in a Jefferson HS football game and the management letting the kids get a beer! Shakey's moved to where Magills is located (formerly OSM) and Shakeys became Benninghams (?) and it was renamed Caldwells when the chain Benningtons came to town. I'm thinking the Tysons Shakeys was near where the current PetsMart (formerly Bed, Bath and Beyond and originally a Safeway) is located.

My father tells a story about when he was going up to Annandale Mill Works (where the Chik fil A is going soon). There was a sign that said "Annandale a City with a Future" near 236 and Evergreen. The future has passed...

Sorry that I don't have any pictures to post here but I do have my beautiful memories of growing up in a wonderful area -- RIP.

Clearly, FFXU is a little like the 1973 Belmont Stakes, with 'Old Pictures' in the role of Secretariat. Sadly, not everyone can manage to appreciate greatness, but I'll be looking forward to more of it here regardless. Keep up the great work, folks!

I believe I went to the Tyson's Shakey's once around the early 80s. If you were going west on Gallows and crossed over 7 onto International Drive it was up a hill to the left.

I have not had a decent Canadian bacon pizza since the demise of Shakey's.

Yes it was behind that near that large church that was up there then, always full at lunch during the week. Horn and Horns fried chicken was great !

Great Fried Chicken piled high ? That's also right off the Rt 3 exit southbound on I95 to Culpepper in Central Park at the Great American Buffet, sorry fat and salt hogs the pizza cant hold a candle to Shakeys , stop in on the way back from the OBX or Va Beach youll see its overall good there's plenty of healthy choices too lean grilled chicken breasts, fish salads veggies ,it your plate after all

Ok I know, the brain cells again It was one of the first tall buildings built at Tysons which is the highest natural point in Fairfax Co. The old dump at I66 now is

Mount Murtaugh - the highest point in Fairfax County - at 556.9 ft

Is that Esso station on RT 29 in Centreville? I remember a small Exxon station very near the intersection with RT 28 back in the 1960's when I got my first car - a 1963 Falcon.

Another yearbook pic from Fairfax library archives. Falls Church 3 chefs in the background. 1971. Is that a VW?

Can we stop with the stupid VW spotting in old photos already? VW's were ubiquitous for many years, therefore it is not surprising that one may find one or more in photos of parking lots and streets. You could do the same thing with Priuses in modern photos? How exciting...

I just noticed that van in the background. Could be an old split window VW Bus.

Got a few photos.

Charley sat in his chair on the bottom of the hill on Picket Road smiling and waving to all that passed, He owned property in Fairfax City and it was taken from him . Fairfax City with the first good Mayor Silverthorne's blessing gave Charley a trailer to live in on the city maintenance lot. Charley was there in the 1980s and died before 1990
