Here is a picture of the Lincoln Memorial Dedication from May 30, 1922. A nice young couple is in the foreground, happy to be at the event.

I remember it because I'd walk past on the way to the mall. My parents said I couldn't go in alone. Unsavory people hung out in bowling alleys.

Happy holidays to all the OPOFCLE regulars!

I found this pic of the old Yorkshire Market on Route 28 in Manassas. It was right across the road from the Yorkshire Restaurant where CVS now stands. I'm guessing early 80s? I used to drive here from Clifton because they sold Richfood products and I was hooked on Richfood because Memco got me started on them.
This store was torn down and a new and improved Yorkshire marked was built next door. I think it lasted about 10 years before CVS came and tore down the new Yorkshire market to make way for CVS.

The 1 story square building in the middle of the parking lot was the bathroom for "Colored" persons before integration in Fairfax County

The bus is just above it to the left of it, and the one of the cars parked at it is white on the corner of the small building . By 1972 it was a storage area.

The original Court House was built in 1800 on the far left, the center part was built about 1920 the rest of the wing to the right of center 1954 with a "new" jail and court records room behind the courthouse the jail to the left the records to the right. Old Fairfax residents may remember the basketball "caged" area on the side of the jail by the bathroom

The board of Supervisors met in the courthouse until the Massey building was opened around the end of summer 1969. The building below the bus is the old jail built around 1900 some and that was the FXCO jail until the 1954 additions were finished

In the background the roof of the Safeway store which closed about 1973 and became Pfaltzgraff for many years after

I found this thread some years ago hoping to find a picture of the Springfield Hot Shoppes where I worked from 1970 - 1973. Never saw one, but I returned to search again this Holiday 2018 season. I became sucked into the thread at page 1,around 2012-2013 and followed it for 23 pages, hoping for more. I don't have time to scour this thread the way I would like to. I had to stop at page 23 and will certainly continue, but I skipped to page 110, which is now the Holidays of 2018.

Let me just say I don't know where Gordon Blvd went between page 23 and 110,and I would like to know if Gordo, Gorden, "Hey Kids" is still around. I have read the first 23 pages I feel like some of those who posted have become old friends.
Some of you are older than me and many are younger, but each addition took me down many another memory lane.
I grew up in Ravensworth. Parents bought the house at $27.5K.
The Ding How was a well established restaurant on Bland St. in 1964.
Went to WSHS the first year it opened when we had to go double shifts with Robert E Lee students. I remember that bridge on Rolling Rd the buses couldn't cross due to weight restrictions. The route took us through Burke and the ride was lovely, albeit long, and we were dumped back onto Rolling Rd just on the other side of that bridge. (Where there was a Top Hat trucking company some time ago.)
I remember Springfield when Backlick and Franconia had a light. I also remember when the Hot Shoppes had the roller skaters, but I worked there after that was all paved over. Remember when you could order a whole turkey dinner from there with all the fixin's for Thanksgiving? Remember Grilled Liver sandwiches? Remember the Hot Fudge Ice Cream Cake?

I remember Hooes Road from one end to other on those days/nights when all you did was ride it at top speed. Remember the rock overlooking the creek? Hooes Rd started at the old Fire dept on Backlick and ended at Lorton prison. I remember the Nike sites and corn fields that went forever through Lorton and Lorfax.

I remember taking any road that still forded a creek in Fairfax or PW county. At one time Franconia road forded a creek way west. Minnieville Rd. forded a creek just near the current 234 parkway and Laywers Rd crossed one just outside Vienna, the back way to Reston.

I remember when Reston opened. Went there in the middle of the night to take a walk around the Lake before it was completely finished. Also remember going to Dulles airport after it opened....it was dead as door-nail. Additionally, I took a flight from there in 1971 to Denver using "Stand by" tickets and the "mobile lounge" took you out to your plane and rose up to the plane door so you could board.

I remember taking Braddock road from Alexandria to Haymarket where it ended at Rt 15. It was gravel all the way from Centreville. I remember Old Columbia Pike, a wonderful weeee-bump road if you took it at 60 MPH between Lincolnia and Columbia Pike.

I have no pictures to share today. Wish I did.

I also remember when Hoodbridge was in its Hay day. Had a friend who lived in the trailer park on the hill across from Marumsco Plaza.

I remember Davis Ford Road from the Occoquan River to Manassas....it was a long, windy road. I was also fortunate enough to have crossed the OLD Occoquan bridge from 123 before it was torn down. I remember Hurricane Agnes. It washed out 95 between Woodbridge and Lorton. Cars were washed over the hill and down to the river.
There is a ton more stored in these old memory banks....The first 23 pages of this thread have been wonderful and I will come back and read more and more.

I hope someone out there remembers some of the things I have mentioned.
Remember the Partners 2 in Clifton? I worked there for a while, too in 1973.

The picture of the MVC above reminds me of a restaurant (not sure what it may have been before that) in the Tysons area at 123 and Rt 7. Weird 2 story restaurant. I ate there, but danged if I can remember the name. I think the Zayre's had been in the building behind it... and that was probably the G.E.M. before that... and the Tyson's meat locker was across the street.
Sorry this is so long. Too many memories and not but a tiny few of them have been listed here.
Cheers all. Happy New Year 2019.

In 1975, everything outside the Beltway -- even by a little bit -- was taken to be some hayseed throw-back to clod-buster, overalls-wearing primitive times. It took quite a while before that presumption started to crumble away.

(Hoping I haven't posted this before; not a picture, but I think it fits this thread in spirit at least)

In 1952, my dad's stepfather died. They were living in DC, but he'd owned some land out Ashburn way. My grandmother said "I'm going to sell the land. It's terrible land, and they're terrible people." (In her vernacular, that meant they were uncultured, country folks; not a bias he held, that was all her.)

My dad said, "Mother, we should go look at it first". So they got into the car and drove out Rt. 50 to Rt. 7 and then out Rt. 7 for a VERY long way into the sticks, and asked around, and found the place. The only building of any kind was a sagging shack, and there was a pile of manure in the front yard.

Well, that was enough for her! They returned to the city and she sold it immediately.

30+ years later, he was in the area on business and had some time to kill, and said, "I wonder if I can find the spot". He was notorious for not needing directions a second time, and sure enough, he located it. And the shack and manure pile were still there. He raised his eyes to the heavens and said "You were right, Mother!"

Of course, I'm pretty sure it's part of Broadlands now. But 50 years is a LONG time to wait (and pay taxes) to coup a return--not convinced she was wrong to sell.

You’re not kidding. Manassas was country as hell then, and Haymarket might have well been in West Virginia. My mom was from England, and had a prim-and-proper accent, but I remember going with her to Warrenton and they couldn’t understand her!

I miss those times though.

I know it is a crappy way of doing research, but I went up and down Lee Highway on the Historical Imagery Database site and did not see two structures that matched those in the photo. Really hoping someone comes up with a year and location for this photo. Curious if they did not expand the Snack Bar during one of the gaps in the imagery. Have a good weekend guys.

Looks like a 1964 Buick Skylark with a few years on it, so my guess is around 1969/1970?

There was an old ESSO station in the area, but is still had working pumps up into the very early 1980's

I recall buildings that looked very similar down Lee Highway, towards Centreville, but closer to the then-new Fairfax County Government Center. There were several old motels, an auto body or tire business, an antique store and old cinder block Cape Cod style houses. Some of the motels hung on through the late 1990s. Could the buildings be in what is now considered Fairfax and not Centreville?

That snack bar has what looks like the remnants of a gas pump island up front. Maybe it was a gas station converted to a snack bar. This pic is before my time as I did not start running the roads of Fairfax county till the mid 70s. It would be cool if we could pinpoint the location.

You can still go square dancing most nights around here.

(However, it is a lot less popular than 20, 40, or 70 years ago.
There are now many more kinds of entertainment easily accessible.
And since you don't want to leave your house and drive some more
after having endured The Jungle, most people just stay home and
watch Netflix or surf the Internet and shit. Going out for some
social exercise and having some fun dancing are not high on the list.
Especially if alcohol is not involved.)

Is that the GM training center in Fairfax?
Went to classes there in mid 70s while working at JKJ Chevrolet in Tyson's.

Here is a more modern photo of the Fotomat structure, and the GM Training Center can be seen in the background.

The cars parked around the end of the strip shopping center are at the old DMV.

The construction on University Drive at Lee Hi-Way is for the future homes of Jim McKay Chevrolet, Sunoco, and Fairfax Dodge.

Thanks for the great picture!

Is that a power line running behind the snack shop? That makes me think a road could be back there.

Cannot confirm or deny with proof, but I am thinking that it is not Baileys Crossroads. Seems to me I recall seeing a photo of Tyson's Corner at some point that looked a lot like the intersection in your photo. Will defer to someone with more knowledge of course.

And you are killing me with these photos with unknown dates!!!

Both are Bailey's Crossroad. Photo #1 is from the mid 1950's - Photo #2 is Civil War era. Tyson's Corner looks totally different.

In the April 1957 pic of the shopping center across from The GM training center and where Jim McKay and Fairfax Dodge were built . The part of the shopping center building at the very end where it was, near the long white building.

Many of the Fairfax crowd from a good distance away got their drivers license there or learners permit after a drivers test. Today the DMV's have security guards that are private businesses back years ago they were like the state police just for the DMV locations Virginia DMV Police I believe

Years ago we had to go to Falls Church High to get our license from a judge or at least go and listen to a judge and Officer Cox about safety in the auditorium

Seems like it might be part of a motel. I wonder if the house to the left isn’t the office.

Wow, My alter ego posted what I was thinking. I do remember some remnants on the left side heading out of FFX towards Centerville at one point...the Antique Shop sparks a memory.

I see a drive thru and I want to paint it pink
No things in N. V-A. that I like I think
I see the gangs walk by and they're MS-13
I have to turn my head the world's like a latrine

I see a line of cars and none of them are bugs
Illegal aliens and lots of nigger thugs
I see people turn their heads and quickly look away
It used to be a place but what it is today...

No more will Annandale or Springfield or Fairfax
Be that nice place to grow up those are just the facts

If I look hard enough into the setting sun
I point my heart down south and to Kentucky run

Roslyn Auto Body moved out to near Lake Barcroft when buildings in Roslyn started being built taller since you can't build anything higher than the Washington Monument in DC (at least for now...) and developers figured out that building tall buildings across the river would be a good idea.

The white seven story building was some sort of grain mill/flour holding building. Its been a long time ago that the building was taken down and I was a wee child then. This was when that area in Georgetown was very industrial -- perhaps something in conjunction with the Old Heurich Brewing Co (grain for brewing) that was located where the Kennedy Center is now.

I think "Fight Pay TV" was a place where you could go see pay for view items before cable. Go and watch a major fight somewhere and pay for it.

I think the last movie that I saw at the Springfield Rocking Chair Theatre was "Ghostbusters."

Also the State Theatre picture above -- "Gigi" came out in 1958 so there's your sign for how old the picture is.
