Damn dude, you went to school with Matthew McConaughey? I didn’t know he went to Herndon HS. I bet you all were dazed and confused all day.

That little area referred to above was a group of 1940's vintage houses on what is now known as the "Towers Crescent" development, including 8000 Towers Crescent, which at one time (might still be) was the tallest office building in Tysons.

The road was Mimosa Drive, and, the houses were there through the end of the 70's.

Until the newer Towers Crescent building was completed, say around 2007 or so, when driving on the Perimeter road for Tysons as if you were going to LL Bean, you could still see the remnants of metal fences that at one time was the fence in the backyard of some of these houses that were built in the 40's and demolished in the late 70's.

Sorry kid, but that stretch of road was known as 495 until about 1990 when it was pointed out that it did not conform with Federal rules for naming interstates. Namely two digit interstates go through, 3 digit are bypass.

More precisely, two- (and single-) digit Interstates are main routes; three-digit Interstates are either bypasses (even first digit) or spurs (odd first digit). With a few exceptions like 270, which is kind of named wrong.

The Interstate system was approved in 1956, President Eisenhower knew of Germanys Autobahn system and he wanted the same for the US national defense to move troops and equipment fast to any part of America

The interstate system was numbered like the older US Highway System which gives roads numbers depending on the direction they travel. US 1 the first US Highway numbered is here in Fairfax Co and goes from Maine to Florida. Rt 1 a odd number travels north and south , all US highway numbers that are odd do the same. All US Highway numbers that are even travel east to west such as our Rt 50 that starts in Ocean City Md and travels to Sacramento Ca
As you head west the north south numbers grow larger with US 101 right on California's coast and the east to west numbers start with US 2 in Maine and become higher by the time you get to Florida with US 90

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Numbered_Highway_System US Highways

The interstate system is the same with odd numbers traveling north to south and even numbers traveling east to west, One big difference with the older US Highway system is that the US interstates low single digit numbers start on the west coast for north to south routes with I-5 and by the time you get here on the east there up to I-95. Going east to west the interstate numbers start low with I-10 across the southern areas going up to I-90 across the northern most states , which is a reverse of the US highways north south east west numbering system

The beltways spurs and thru route numbers are as described by Greybeards post

https://www.fhwa.dot.gov/interstate/history.cfm US Interstate system

All in all , find a north south and east west US highway or interstate sign and it will give you an idea of where your at

Yep. With the exception of I-99, the former US 220, which broke the pattern and as such is an abomination!

I give the pattern breaking award to I-238, which has nothing to do with I-38 (which also does not exist).

According to some page (wikipedia?), it was CA-238, and needed work. There were no state funds available, but Interstate allocations were available. So they rebranded it from "CA" to "I." It should have been I-*80, but I-80 has so many spurs there may not have been any numbers left.

It's in the eastern side tangle of the San Francisco Bay. Used to go that way once a week, in the '90s.

As a Green party voter you are entitled to your opinions.
They are shared by one or two percent of the population.
Most observers see a strong correlation with those persons who constantly are looking for something to be outraged about.
The demographic of the continually offended overlaps heavily with the democratic party.
There are many threads here and elsewhere where you can share your constant frustration.
I think I speak for most contributors to this particular thread when I say :
" Go whine about everything , especially politics, somewhere else.

Might have been cute. Bet she doesn't work at the Autozone that sits there now though.

I looked up the address on the matchbook, and it is near Brown's Mazda on RT.1

They must have moved in the early 1980's to the location I remember some 38 years ago.

My bad. Worked for 20 years at 14th & K NW, so thought I'd drop a line in the water. Not sure that Flippers or The Golden Dome (two other spots where I spent a lot of time) would have elicited the same reaction...

Used to walk across Franklin Park to get to The K Street Eatery for lunch. Egg salad on rye with lettuce, tomato, and mayo. Sounds simple, but I haven't had one as good before or since.

I had a set of Jarts when I was about 12 years old. We played the hell out of them and not once did anyone ever get hurt. I kind of wish I had them back now.

Here’s one from wayyyy back! 1964 to be exact. We all went to Woodson High School, as seen by the evidence on my buddy’s letterman jacket (Go Cav’s!) We took state that year in football. This is us hanging out at the diner down main street. That diner is long gone but great memories are still there. Cannot remember the name of the diner, does anybody know?

Downvoting the Happy Days photo.

Hate all of those 70s era tv shows that started with a retro premise; Waltons/1920s-30s, Little House on The Prairie, Happy Days, Joanie Loves Chachi, Laverne and Shirley. Some effort was initially made to establish authenticity but once ratings showed the shows were hits, then that original premise was lost.

Mary Ellen and all Waltons girls with 80s hair and designer jeans, Joanie and Chachi on Happy Days and JLC with their 80s clothes, Michael Landon with his then current hair. Ridiculous.

I remember seeing a later episode of Happy Days where they show a courthouse from the outside to set the scene. All the cars going by are clearly from the 1980s. I think Henry Winkler was the only one still in his period costume by then.

I'm thinking that only the theatre was knocked down (years ago) and more stores were added on to the little shopping center that was already there -- the pet center, looks like a Greyhound bus station.

I’m just old enough (39) to remember that. The theater was torn down and became a People’s Drug, now CVS, that serviced the residents of Fairlington. On that same block is Ramparts bar, not a bad little spot for a drink, even today.

Thanks for sharing photo of the original Herndon High School on Locust St. That site became Herndon Intermediate School after the new high school was built on Dranesville Road into present day. Locust St. Herndon Intermediate School further developed in late 1960's with a new building behind the original edifice facing Locust St. in the photo. Aforementioned original/edifice was torn down in 1980's
with additional construction for Herndon Intermediate which is now known as Herndon Middle School.

I hate to be picayune Andy but that is Alexandria's Union Station and not Potomac Yards. It looks like the picture would have been taken from the bridge where Duke Street crosses over the railroad tracks.
