I spent a fair amount of money at Pep Boys in Annandale trying to keep my beater cars running in the late 70s. We thought this trick was hilarious back in the 11th grade. I know it's stupid but it still cracks me up!

Know exactly where that place is. Remember the Old Spaghetti Mill?

These have been posted before, but worth another look.

Those cartoon characters look like something that would be called offensive in a different context.

Interesting to look at the mobile home park out Rt. 50 just before Loudoun County. Most of the street names are of airlines that are no longer in business.
Northeast, Northwest, Braniff, Pan Am, Trans World, La Nica, BOAC and National are the ones I see. I wonder if it was originally flop houses for flight crews who had to overnight at Dulles. Rent a room in a mobile home for cheap and sleep there maybe three times a week?

Starter homes in Nova, it was called that along with Airline Parkway as it near Dulles and the area was rural when it was developed, It still is a nice area, reasonably priced for the mobile home, however the lot rents are high and there are many rules on how old they can be as well as other things. It was considered far out in its day and now is considered close in

It was laid out to be temp housing for the construction workers building Dulles Airport back in the late 1950's

Well, there is an interesting bit of history. Thanks. A guy I shared an apartment with worked on the Airport expansion project. He got to babysit concrete in the cold months to make sure it was curing correctly!!!

NOT challenging your assertion, just wondering: got any more info? Link/book reference? I've read the book about Dulles but don't think it was in there. For some reason I find this stuff fascinating.

Looks to be 1970 or 1972 because of the license plates on the VW and the Corvair

I liked the film quite a bit.
The first eleven minutes of the host telling us how clever they were correcting tracking errors on videotape and such could easily have been deleted.
If anyone knows exactly where the road to happiness is please let us know.
Most drivers in Fairfax county today are stuck in traffic or on some detour not anywhere near that destination.

I think that might be the old Methodist church being torn down. Looking at it from West St with 123 on the other side of the building. Just a guess. Love the picture! Thx FF.

The old Beverly mill. Its still there but the Gulf station is gone. You can see it today from westbound I-66 after Haymarket but before the Plains on your right hand side.

The old building that housed the gas station is still there...at one time, it housed a small "curio" type shop, maybe in the 60's before 66 was cut through.

This shows rt 55 before 66 was cut through, Rt 55 still parallels 66 from Gainesville to Strasburg. Cool old country road.

As a matter of fact, until the early 2000's, in the town of Plains on rt 55, you could still see signs for Dulles Airport "that way", which predated rt 66.

There is still one of those old signs left. Well, I saw it about a year ago anyway. I think it's in Marshall just east of Belvoir road on rt 55.

Make that two, as one more survives on westbound Little River Tnpk prior to Old Columbia Pike.

There's another one further west on Little River in Annandale, and I remember seeing one ~15 years ago in Arlington near the Marine Corps Memorial.

FROM VDOT:
Lincolnia was still a sparsely populated area of Fairfax County when the top photo was taken in 1948. Work was underway on a bridge to take traffic from Route 236 over the new Route 350 being built below. When this section of the Henry G. Shirley Memorial Highway opened a year later, it was Virginia’s first limited access freeway, providing two lanes of travel in both directions separated by a grass median - quite a novelty at the time! Changes were soon to come, as this land was annexed by Alexandria in the 1950s and the bridge had to be reconstructed to meet standards of the new Interstate system. About 53,000 vehicles now cross the Duke Street bridge each day in this densely populated area of Northern Virginia. I-395 below carries another 190,000 vehicles daily. #TBT #VDOT

on pg 90 there's a what's this with 2 rows of round things. i'll guess tanks or (small) silos. in the 80's fairfax city still had silos and people bough (seed) from them.

file.php?2,file=323244,filename=1964810_

here i look at the thing i begin to notice the outer shell is likely all wood. In the inside appears to be some kind of rods, perhaps iron pipes used in plumbing back then, or maybe large "pins" (that would hinge large equip or bridge?) held inside the box.

what looks like a complex machine is just wood quickly hammered into place for shipping - difficult to see due to the photo quality. the side of the box is torn.

that's my guess.

either that or they are considered low enough in the ground to be "kaisons" (earth rods to hold the weight of a foundation), the wood is supposed to hold concrete - the contour on the side (hole) is for another part of the structure. and they are about to pour concrete over it? if so i have no idea why it'd be held by wood - they'd be drive in ground and not need holding.

Don't know what that is...but, it seems it is at the end of that bridge.

up until the early 2000s, maybe 9/11 was the end of of it, there used to be "POAC", which was Pentagon Officers Athletic Club, which was an adaptive reuse of some other underground thing right there at the bridge that goes over 110 as it passes the pentagon, so, maybe this was some equipment that was part of that underground areas original use, maybe HVAC?

Who knows.

Here is something ive often wondered-for many years, I took GW parkway northbound, getting off at 123.

As I rounded the turnoff from GWP to 123 heading towards mclean, the stone guardrail on the right has been "under renovation" or repair, like, every year.

I mentioned this to a friend like 10 yrs ago...and then they started noticing...like, almost always "under repair"...fixed, then, another renovation.

Its not really in an area that would receive any more damage than any place else on the bridge, or the PW for that matter.

Jokingly, we wonder if they are putting some sort of equipment in there related to the CIA right down the road, like pop up bollards or something.

Na probs not.

But weird.

That photo of the Dunn Loring station shows soldiers standing on the platform. They are doubtless from nearby Camp Alger, which would place the picture from between 1898 and 1900.

If you look closely, you notice that it is a drawing rather than a photograph. Could have been drawn during the period stated, or sometime well after. Also you state 1898 to 1900 for Camp Alger. The historic marker indicates that due to disease Camp Alger was closed and was sold off in 1898, so would not have existed in 1899 or 1900.

The rods your see are what is known as "re-bar"

Steel bars set up inside a concrete form before it is poured to reinforce the strength of concrete structure.

This is the concrete bridge that connected the Pentagon to the large parking lot on the other side of RT 110.

The photo was taken during WWII.

No, it is not the bridge to the North Parking Lot. That bridge runs East-West (ish). The link I provided shows the structure in question, which clearly runs North-South and aligns with the Pentagon as does the one in the the OPs photograph.

"caissons". And that's not exactly what a caisson is, though it's an understandable confusion. Looks like cribbing to me.

Yes it is quite obvious that the bridge over 110 is oriented like the structure under construction.... https://www.google.com/maps/@38.8763215,-77.0521031,3a,75y,241.62h,96.04t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sDrJbvX7F14Rh-TqsnCnQSA!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

Can you tell me what other famous image was taken from this location?

Wrong angle on this photo, and not the bridge in question.

Did anyone notice the train track running under the bridge? That ought to clear things up for those who know our track history.

I believe that those railroad tracks adjacent to the Pentagon were part of a spur line, probably from Rosslyn, built to carry coal to the Pentagon power plant. They also generated steam for heating there.

In addition to having their own power plant, the Pentagon also used to have their own sewage treatment plant.

Good catch! That rail system was shut down in the late 1950's and the rail bed became the asphalt bike trail that runs along the Potomac.

Sorry to burst your bubble but METRO did not exist in Washington DC area until the 1970's.There was the underground train that transported the House and Senate staff to their buildings, but METRO was not around in the 1950's.

The Mt Vernon Trail was built to get bicycles off the GW Parkway. I'm not aware that it was a rails-to-trails thing at all But there was this forty years ago...

That is 495, but it’s clearly 4 lanes, not 3.

You can’t see it in the photo, but that’s the area where you can see the tower of the Virginia Episcopal Seminary. The building was temporarily McClelland’s HQ during the war of northern aggression.

I don't usually get involved with squabbles, but that section of the Beltway is actually tagged as I-95.

Starting in the Springfield I-95 splits off to the Wilson Bridge, and I-495 heads off to Tyson's and the Cabin John Bridge.

It was the Beltway I 495 the I-95 name came about lately to avoid confusion to I-95 thru travelers .

It still is I-495 and I-95 with I-95 on the major signage, I know people who have been here over 50 years and now they are the ones confused lol

Like I-66, I-95 was at one point planned to plow right through downtown. When those plans were scuttled, it became prudent to put I-95 signage along I-495 in Maryland. No point in sending thru-traffic winding through the Rock Creek Rollrcoaster.

1968. There was nothing much west of Tysons, Vienna and Fairfax. Just farms and some newer home communities (Greenbriar for example). No Fair Oaks Mall (built in the 80's), no Hechingers (70's) or KMart on Jermantowne Road. Not much of anything. People that lived out Rt. 50 drove into Vienna to go to Southern States for their home improvement and lawn care needs. They drove into Tysons to "The Mall" to do their clothes and home goods shopping.

No -- that land is what was between the Beltway and Tysons Corner Center on Route 7. Pimmitt Hills is located inside the Beltway closer to where I-66 cuts through now.

All those homes are now land that is developed with the Tysons' Marriott and the Tower Building. Probably (and hopefully) received a pretty penny when the land was developed...

My mother used to take me to Tysons on Saturdays, I had $20/$40 dollars and came home with a lot of "stuff."

Last night, my father was telling me some story about when he worked out in the early development of Reston and Route 7 was only two lanes (total).

Fairfax County was a wonderful place to grow up then...
