The first time I was ever on television was at the Christmas display
at Tysons (a few years earlier than the one shown here). I was doing
a school report on the display, and the TV reporter took a still shot
of me (I myself was taking a picture or writing on a notepad, I forget).
I didn't know about it until we happened to see it going by as part of
a montage on the evening TV news. (They didn't have a video story,
just an anchor talking about the goings on, while showing stills.)
I was like -- Hey, did I just see myself?!?! -- and then the phone
started ringing. I was 10 or 11 years old...

At the old Pineridge Elem school site, The place is still there with some PD ops. FCPD was still using Smith & Wesson 6 shot .38 special revolvers then

The 911 center there opened in 1987 it was in the basement of the Massey building before that and before that it was in a radio room at the police admin center behind the Massey that was built around 1960-61 before that there was no crime in Fairfax and little need for police

It looks like the corner of Columbia Pike and George Mason. Did that become a Red Barn after being a Gino/s?

Not sure but the building in back to the left might be an identifier.

Looks similar but Gino's on Columbia Pike in Annandale had no building to left of it...It was on corner of Columbia Pike & Chatelain (across CP from John Marr) It used to be a Top's Drive In before it was Gino's IIRC...Pic might have been another different Gino's location along Columbia Pike...???

I don't remember a car wash in that area of Annandale. That area was/is very residential once you are past building that now houses the Lighthouse Tofu Restaurant.

The Annandale Baptist Church would be to the left of Gino's if it were the one on Columbia Pike in Annandale -- so I don't think its the one that had previously been a Tops.

It is absolutely not the Annandale Ginos.

But I think someone was suggesting it was the place in Arlington,
on Columbia Pike and S. George Mason, that was a Red Barn,
currently a Penske Truck Rental.
(I have no idea about that.)

What the hell are you referring to?
Are you trying to tell us that the SWAT team responded to the tornado damage?
Must have been very hard up to try and get noticed.
Did they use their special weapons to shoot at the tornado?

The gas station at the corner of CSR was a Texaco until 8-10 years ago and the alignment in the picture is wrong.

The Shell at that corner faces towards Route 7 and the intersection is to the right side of the building.

I'm trying to think if there was a Shell on Columbia Pike somewhere near Route 7.

I see "Louie's Rock City" with my 900 Harley XLCH in the parking lot and a 50 ft long black stripe on the pavement when I left on the rear wheel front wheel skyward "trying" to "impress" a few chicks. I also see a hole in my wallet the next day when the rear tire finally had enough

Trying to impress chicks when the bike had a solo seat, no pillion pad on the rear fender. smart move ! Lone Wolf! I also see the medial supply store where I as a certified geezer buy my blood pressure cuff, my walker, my canes my raised toilet seat my shower chair, OK so I lied the last 4 are coming in the future years lol

Wore a black leather jacket screaming eagle on the back

The Sunset Drive In pic(I'm guessing here) is early 70s. Some of the guys I worked with back then were located in Payne's warehouse buildings where NVCC was then located. After dark and the bosses had all gone, they would use ladders to haul lawn chairs and beer coolers to the roof and enjoy the movies. Good times!

Thanks for the story. Stories are just as good as the pictures. Anyone who says different should be ignored.

Does anyone know where the Pizza Chef was located? Google maps shows 4750 Richmond Hwy on the bridge over Cameron Run.

TO Lortonboy:

In the mid or late 60's, all the addresses were "recalibrated" using the beltway as a sort of "middle"...

So, before then, 4700 Richmond Highway was probably down around Hybla Valley...after then, who knows where it is.

NorvaPics.com has old phonebook listings, pre and post recalibration

Anyone remember a kids channel on media general cable called “the reading channel” in the 80’s?

It had no audio but featured still pictures in cartoon form of books suck as Mr. Happy (or something similiar).

There was a mascot for the channel
Named Robbie Rainbow, I think.

It was on Gallows. In the late 70s you could drive behind Levitz and see the screen for the Lee Hi drive in movie for free. At that time the speakers at the drive in were in such poor condition that they started broadcasting the audio from a low wattage AM transmitter so we were able to hear the audio for free too.

Does anyone have pics or remember the intersection of sully road and westfields blvd in Chantilly. Before it was an over pass. I remember there were tall pillar sculpture things. I have a vague recollection of this. I'm sure its a long shot for pics.

https://www.classicdriver.com/en/article/classic-life/joseph-baermann-strauss-man-who-built-worlds-most-beautiful-bridge

Joseph B Strauss was with the engineering company that built the drawbridge on the Memorial Bridge and did some drawings on the project

Later he was the chief engineer and designer in charge of the entire project of building a small international orange color bridge over a tiny stream

That Bridge is in San Francisco California and is named "The Golden Gate Bridge" Its 1 mile span crosses the 300 ft deep Golden Gate entrance to San Francisco Bay from the Pacific ocean

The Memorial Bridge's drawbridge has not been opened in many years, It was required to a part of the design by the US Navy to allow ships to travel up to Georgetown and was considered no longer needed by the Navy when the 14th st. Metro bridge was built. The drawbridge is at this time being readied to be removed during the Memorial bridges current renovation

All bridges over navigable waters in the USA must be approved by the US Navy

It must be duly noted

That The Fool That Was The Terror Of Highway Number one

Once jammed gears crazily while screwing the throttle on ,crossing that wild looking orange 220 foot high bridge one day on a stripped down Harley Davidson 74 long hair blowing in the wind , wisps of weed smoke from his lips. Sorry solo seat on that bike, Janis rode with another wild man

Janis was an American Indian woman not a rock singer, she could sing some sweet songs in her native language

I believe the object being towed is the floating stage that was anchored along the DC shore, near where the Kennedy Center is today. There were several tiers of stone "steps", or bleachers, leading down to the barge/stage that served as seats for the performances. Concerts and shows were featured there during warm weather. The barge is long gone but the stone bleachers remain!

The concert barge was the scene of summer concerts from 1935 till they were stopped in 1965 and the barge was towed away.

Crowds of 10,000 people were common.

"The concerts had to stop in 1965 because jets had started flying into National Airport and the noise was just too loud to overcome."
