https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automated_parking_system

Not sure how common they are, but they have those in Manhattan.
I parked my car in one around 1995, and it didn't look like a new facility.
I figured, "Wow, that's how they park cars in NYC, huh!" but since then
I have also parked in NYC in conventional human-parked multistory garages.
Mostly when I go up there I manage to park on the street, and haven't seen
the robot-elevator parking thing, so no idea how common it is today.

Anyone see the old 6 month Va inspection sticker on the brown car? Looks to be a "8".

Not sure if it’s still there, but there was vertical robo-parking in the old UMWA headquarters at 15th and L NW after Camden converted it into high-end residential units.

The only folks in the picture seem to be interested in the VW more than anything else.

Evans Farm Inn -- my aunts wanted to go there after my high school graduation. My sister and I wanted to go to Joshua Tree since they were not very concerned about who drank their sangria -- was it complimentary or just cheap?

We ended up at Evans Farm Inn since it was so "quaint."

Beef Steak Charlies several locations with steaks spiced shrimp and all you could drink sangria I remember the one on Duke St near by the old gone Bombay Bicycle Club which I went in and looked at and left

Another was Emerson's all you could eat and cheap mixed drinks during happy hour with a glittering disco ball hanging from the ceiling over the dance floor, high platform shoes, silk shirts with crazy prints, long pointed collars, mullet or Prince Valiant hair, disco clown garb is what I thought

Never thought all that much of Evans Farm as a restaurant, but it was a great place to take the kids when they were young to feed carrots and apples to the horses and such. The geese over by the mill pond were a different story. Mean and ornery as they come! Hateful creatures!

Yes, great picture!! Corner of Old Keene Mill and Backlick Rds looking towards I-95. I believe around 1963/64 with construction of the right turn from Backlick onto Old Keene Mill?

That intersection, when it was an intersection, was the location of the first traffic light in Springfield.

Also shows Northern Virginia Bank, built around 1962, and that the Hot Shoppes had car hops!

I really don't know for sure but I think this car is westbound on route 7 near route 28. Anybody have any better guesses? Could it be the Dulles access road?

Was Dulles Airport ever visible from Route 7? I thought 7 would have been too far north. My guess would be Route 28 approaching the Dulles Access Road.

The road in the picture probably like 28 when its wasn't super highway like. The overpass the car is approaching is probably the Access Road. Route 7 is north of the location of this picture.

The very edge of my memory is when 28 was only two lanes.

I know that I'm ancient.

It is the Dulles access road. Because of the construction of all the overpasses they built up berms, so I was not able to get the exact angle of the photo so this goolemaps link is closer to the airport. But looking at this you can see the dark building at the left edge of your photo and the approximate size of the control tower and terminal. Remember that they added on to both ends of the terminal, so the tower does not appear to be on the edge of the terminal like in your photo.

Pretty sure that's the Dulles Access Road. 28 was only two lanes, for one thing. And I'm pretty sure I've seen that angle from the DAR myself.

It's definitely not Rt. 7.

This picture has been on here before:

What is the road is the car will shortly go over? I think that is the DAR. The road the car is on is going north and the DAR goes southwest to the airport.

Great picture of the Dulles Access Road. The giveaway on this photo is the reflectors mounted on the little posts lining both sides is the road.

We would race on the access road back in the 1970's before there was very much police patrol action.

At 140+ mph those little white reflectors became a blur when running at night, and the center lines became a solid white line.

It looks like a 1969 Camaro.

The access road runs due West. Rt. 28 runs North. If this car is "going north" then the Control Tower would be in front of the terminal building not behind it.

Did you know that Lake George is still open half of the year? The current owner is facing some legal trouble right now,
https://www.eater.com/2017/10/12/16465854/howard-johnsons-jon-la-rock-sexual-abuse

The place is for sale and there is a lady who is trying to get the financing to take it over with the intent on restoring the menu and the building to as close to original as possible. I will be up there on vacation in a few weeks.

Good point. What you implied (and obviously knew) is that the terminal faces north. So gotta be the DAR.

Heard today that the entire shopping center in Vienna with the Giant has been sold. It will be torn down and stores/restaurants/etc. with condos over them will be built up against Rt. 123, and all the parking will be behind the buildings. The "master plan" for Vienna is to do this all along Rt. 123. Wont that be nice?

Nice. Moved here in the mid 80's. Lived in Oakton but would drive out to use the Reston Library to work on homework/papers. Back then the Reston library pretty much sat by itself. And there certainly were not homeless people hanging out in it like today.

Nope. But WETA (PBS) has been running a series of shows covering the 60's, 70's, 80's and the 90's. They show some great footage of local bands in the clubs and arenas in the area. I recorded them all and am keeping them! Some awesome footage that brings back great memories. 80's Punk, 90's Grunge, all the cool clubs in D.C.......

Hi All! I found this thread while working on a public health research project about the Northern Virginia/ DC Area. This forum is a gold mine of historical documents!

I saw that "Time Machine" posted a very early map of DC from the 1850's that I haven't seen elsewhere, but I was wondering if anyone out there had a Map of the DC area during the depression? Specifically released by the Home Owners' Loan Corporation (HOLC). I'd also be interested in any map from the early 20th century of the area that provides data on race. Please feel free to email me directly e l l i s o n c j [at] v c u . e d u

Thanks!

This is a message board about Fairfax County Virginia, not a research tool. What you want can be found with a little effort on your part at the National Archives in Washington D.C.

I thought you folks might appreciate this shot of the chain bridge. It was taken by a huge camera that used glass negatives. This technology was the "HD" graphics of the 1860s and it was helped along by some digital enhancement of modern day for a incredibly clear image for this time period.

I don't usually respond to comments like this, but this time I will.

This is a friendly thread, and the regulars post many interesting photos/comments. Yes it is focused on Fairfax, but it is not uncommon to find picture or comments from other areas of the D.C. Metro area.

People feel free to ask questions, and it is possible to learn something.

Please don't troll on this thread or attempt to bully because you are a miserable person.

Thanks -

@Iron While I agree with you in principle, I must say that this person is taking the easy way out at doing her job. If she is truly doing research, do the research, do not ask someone else to provide the answers. She needs to find the information on her own. As far as being a miserable person... nope, have been one of the most positive posters on this thread since its inception.

So, no lifeguards?

No shade except for a few umbrellas.

Water all over the small pool deck.

Kids doing their own thing without adults hovering.

Zero fat people.

Curious about the exclusivity. Since it was private, was it whites only? Schools in Fairfax County weren't yet integrated. Town of Vienna never did build a community pool as it would have to be open to all. No pool, no controversy.

Copied from Washington Post 1978

For 25 years Frank and Wilda Malcolm's Brookville Swimming Club has been a summer institution in Alexandria, a place where neighbors would gather to cool off in a huge L-shaped pool to socialize and perhaps even to challenge each other to game of shuffleboard.

Among high school seniors, a midnight swim at the club after the prom became a rite of spring and graduation. For others, there were fashion shows, dances and beauty contest.

Although the pool was open only 100 days a year - the Malcolms worked all year for the pool. When it was open they would be there, 64 hours a week. When it was closed, they would go to conventions of pool operators to get ideas for the next season.

But this summer it may not be so.

The Malcolms have decided to retire, and unless residents from the Brook-ville-Seminary section of Alexandria can raise more than $113,000 between now and Monday the pool, off Shirley Highway will not reopen.

I think this photo was posted before but I thought it was worth posting again. A good friend of mine took two pictures of the Springfield Howard Johnsons that had had the Commerce street bridge run between the restaurant and the motel. He patched the two pics together to make this one awesome pic. Bob Evans now occupies the spot where the HOJO restaurant once stood.

That's what the obit said about Mr Malcom's Brookville pool, never knew it had been opened that far back into the 50's. Often saw it along Shirley Highway 395 from the 70's to when it closed in 83 it seems, then town houses were built there, he was a real estate broker, smart man to buy property cheap and make use of it with smaller profits till it goes way up and sell or develop

I said Shirley Highway then 395 as I think in the early 70's it was not called 395 yet, maybe Im wrong, It looks like Shirley Highway in the first pictures background, but the pool was on a 2 lane road running along the side of the highway I thought, you could see the pool very well from Shirley Hwy it was a bit higher up then the highway

Actually, no. The hojo motel was on the other side of the bridge. The Tower, hojo motel and hojo restaurant were all there side by side for many years. The motel started as the Skylark then became hojo and finished its life as the Friendship inn.

I did tell you that it was a trick question, and nobody even guessed the
location -- even when I pointed out the BJs in the background.
Some even called me a liar when I admitted that I took the photos
of these cool 1980s cars in mid-July of 2018!

Sleepy Holla had the closest guess, he said 1984.

And indeed, now that it is all gone and safe, let's put on our magic hats,
and travel to the year 1984, at the "Southfields" Mall.
Just off Shirley Highway where there ought to be some sort of Landmark...

It was also awesome watching tons of those cars getting moved
around downtown, the day they were shooting on I Street.
Didn't have the opportunity to snap at that instant, though.

I am told that the cars run, too, but I didn't witness that.
Just think, somewhere there are monster warehouses of cars
from whatever era you might need for your upcoming production!

Places like these:

https://cinemavehicles.com/catalog.html
http://www.movietimecars.com/

I don't know where the cars in my photos came from.
The studios probably also own a lot of their own.
I suppose they use old photos to dress vehicles like police cars accurately.

8 Pintos in one photo. Like too much of a bad thing.

I am going to guess 1974 because of the age of the cars, and the boy wearing the #42 Charley Taylor jersey.

The big blue BFI trash truck is at the intersection of East St and Sager Ave where you can see the Mathy Club House.

In the background you can see the Draper House, and Amoco Gas Station on Main St.
