I remember it as Chilla Villa.
Classic no-tell motel with Mexican theme.
There and the Breezeway in Fairfax for overnight dates before I had my own place.

There was a cycle shop in that center, kind of hidden in there as I recall, mid 1980's.

And RA cycles was the other place, it was a custom chopper shop, kind of ahead of its time early 70's and had bikes displayed outside. I remember that market carryout next to it but not its name, it was one of the few places on that side of the road you could stop for a coffee or a sandwich after the courthouse on 236 area till you got way into Annandale

The county yard belonged to FCPS before the 80's

And hippies lived in a small old wood hippie house next to the fire station right at Guinea and 236 where the Jewish Comm Center is today, they had to be hippies, they were long hairs wore funny looking clothes and had a big peace sign on the front porch

Thanks for the picture.
I was pretty sure of the spelling.
The Pig and Chick reference made me laugh.
A few years after my Chilla Villa days I had my own place and had a girlfriend who worked as a waitress at Pig and Chick. She always brought back some food.

Was where you slowed down entering the speed trap City of Fairfax coming back in on Rt 50 from the Woodstock Va commune with weed and seeds to take to that house on 236 with the peace sign.

Then you headed to 3 Chefs in Annandale for silver dollar pancakes and round sausages made by Matt or a stop at Jack in the Box to cure munchies.

The Legato school was the last one-room schoolhouse used in Fairfax County. It was moved to downtown Fairfax City in 1971 as part of the Centennial of public education in the county.

In the Marshall Hall Pic, the old home in the centers outer brick walls and chimneys are still there, it burned down , all others in the pic are gone and a public boat ramp is where the pier is. I have heard of the amusement park and rides on the boats there but it was all gone before my time

Never got to Glen Echo, but Marshall Hall was a regular summer evening get-away back in the day. The whole amusement park vibe was a great thing, so we went to whatever ones were near where we lived. Marshall Hall was particularly memorable for an old mechanical soccer game in the arcade. The "players" were stationary and you pushed down on a recessed heavy metal handle to make them kick the ball when it rolled to their feet. The other player tried to manipulate the "goalie" so as to block incoming shots. But there was one back-line player who could not be stopped. He would hit the upper-left corner every single time, making the goalie look utterly helpless. The only hope was that the ball would never roll to that guy, but it usually did. It cost a penny to play that machine, so a lot of laughs came of it for not very much loot. There was nothing quite like the sights and sounds and food and fun of a 1950's era amusement park!

I believe the opicture is from 1952 and that's the DC trolley loop on the north side of the circle. The white building to the left was a Hot Shoppes and to the left of that was the W&OD trolley terminal. The odd-looking dashes in the river are the last of the piers that used to support the Aqueduct Bridge. You can still see the remains of one or two piers on the Virginia side and more of the bridge structure remains on the DC side where the Whitehurst Freeway meets M Street.

On the right side of the picture it looks like there are a string of freight cars on the Pennsylvania Railroad's branch line to Rosslyn. Visiting the office canyon that is Rosslyn today it is easy to forget that for a long time the area was an industrial center.

"Industrial" to include pawn shops, bars, and brothels. Of course, these sorts of things were mainstays of urban economies back in the day.

Rosslyn is quite a safe area today, but it was in its not so distant past one of the worst areas hereabouts to try to get to, through, or from after dark. Bad guys laid in wait no matter which way you turned.

Yes, it's the Fairfax Shopping Center, across from McKay Chevrolet. Here's another picture of High's (on the right), from about 1978.

I believe that High's went into the space in that shopping center that was originally a Kroger's.

Anyone remember the DMV office that was at the end of the shopping center? Long lines, smoke filled, overflowing ashtrays.

Okay, cut me a little slack please but this one is from Sterling. The sterling park "mall" as we used to call it. I lived in Sterling for about 6 months back in 1983. They had Safeway, Highs, Peoples drug, a pizza place and a movie theatre among other stuff. This is the back side of the mall where the High's was.

I remember when there were shithole hotels on Rt. 29 west of Camp Washington. They would be full of cars from West Virginia from Monday through Thursdays. It was the dudes that would drive in for the week to work construction jobs and go back to WV on the weekend.

Very True, I must have about 15 or so postcards from FFX alone...Route 1 also was chock full of them. Both the inroads to DC for tourists in the 40's.

Re: Above, "Franconia"...

No, that is not "Filmdex"...on the Filmdex building, if you look closely enough, you can see where the letters for "Broadmoor Hotel" were, and it is further east, maybe 3-4 miles, on the OTHER side of the battlefield.

Where Oak Park Tourist Court WAS, is now woods, just to the east of the off ramp from 66 to 29 South at Gainesville.

So, if you are heading W on 66, just before you get to the off ramp for 29 South at Gainesville, the site for the Oak Park is to the right...just woods now.

Filmdex is at the "Other" 29 and 66 interchange, further East. If you were to get off 66 taking 29 South there, go about a mile, and Filmdex is on the right, before the Quarry

That B & O Alco switcher was on the old Washington & Old Dominion R.R. from the time that C & O controlled the W&OD. Probably the heaviest power the line ever saw... or could handle, given its likely lightweight rail.

Before my time, but according to Pinterest, it's a place called Conrad's that stood across the street to the west of where Amphora is today.

The W&OD did not overspend on maintenance, but stone and gravel hauling were big for them, so flimsy track was not really an option. The picture above would appear to be from the West Falls Church area near where the Giant is today.

Probably was as much an issue with bridges as track. In the short time it owned the W&OD the C&O did upgrade some bridges, but a locomotive had to be able to operate anywhere on the road and not just on the upgraded sections.

That place turned into Anita's in the 70s I think. I could be wrong but I think it is the same building. The Anitas picture is one of those fake , made to look old pictures i think but I could be wrong. I am very old and Im wrong a lot.

From what I can find it was at 401 Maple Avenue West at the intersection of Lewis Drive and Maple Ave (you can see the street sign in the photo). It was later turned into a Knossos and is now the location of a My Eye Doctor and some other things.

I don’t think that was Anita’s.
Anita’s wasn’t at the intersection of Maple and Lewis. It was further up Maple, by Merchants tire.
Maple and Lewis is where Amphora bakery and My Eye Doctor is.

Does anyone know the difference between Drives, Roads, Avenues, Streets, Lanes, etc in Northern Virginia? Does the developer just arbitrarily pick or are there rules that determines the naming convention?

Many roadways are named after people who promote diversity or human rights in Fairfax County.

All names must be submitted for approval by the board of supervisors.

My favorite is Derosnec Dr. in Oakton, off of Waples Mill. There's gotta be a story behind that one! (Hint: read it backward!)

There is a numbering scheme: the number + first four letters are unique. So if there's an Apple Tree Way and an Applegrove Lane, there will not be a number 123 on both of them. This is (I expect) at least part of the reason that I live on a court with ten houses and the house numbers are five digits. De facto, they could be 1 through 10, but instead they're xxx01 through xxx10.

It looks like Loudoun is participating in the same numbering scheme, but I have not researched it.

In Virginia the Va Dept of Highways long ago created a numbering system for all Virginia roads with signs of shapes to tell you what was what, These roads may also have names along with numbers and in Fairfax all I have seen do

US Highways have the policemans badge shape. In Va its white in color, US 1 ,US 50 ect These were the designated US highways from back in the 1930's with US 1 the first on the East Coast north and south US 101 on the west coast north and south and even number roads like US 50 east to east, Rt 66 the famous of east west vice versa road the same. many US routes pass through states some don't all the way thru others may go coast to coast. The beginning of the US Highways system is in the rear of the White House at the ellipse at the zero mile stone, if you have seen that.No the US did not won the roads, they just made the numbering system up so travelers could find their ways as the automobile became in common use to travel long distances

Virginia Primary roads have the white half oval with the top flat shape, these roads may go through several counties Rt 3 in Va, Rt 7 , these are the main highways in each state, with each state designating the primary roads

Virginia Secondary roads have the white circle with a number ,in Maryland black. These roads begin in each county with the number 600 in Virginia, then the numbers increase , In Fairfax County they are up to 12000 or more. The bigger the number the newer the road, so you can tell how old a secondary road is by the state number. In subdivisions and less used roads the sign may be a small white rectangle on the street sign poles with the name of the street on top also, not the big round circle sign.

The numbers in the 600 series start with 600 in each county in Va so you may see the same numbers in different counties and they are often different roads and sometimes a road that continues into another county

Thanks for the responses. Very enlightening. But my true question was why would a particular piece of blacktop be called a Road rather than a Lane. Is its size, the fact that it is residential rather than commercial, or some other reason? Or is it just totally arbitrary and not based on some government regulations?

That's most street names, builders name them, others are names that have been around in common use as in Olley Lane in Fairfax Braddock Rd to Rt 236. Olley Dotson put the road in and that's why its called that. That was from common knowledge back in that day

Rolling Road it was a road they rolled hogsheads or barrels down they say, Gallows Road you got to know why, as well as Lovers Lane and Lovers Leap

Pardon the intrusion, but: why is it Olley LANE and not Olley ROAD? Did Olley just pick LANE instead of ROAD or instead of WAY or instead of DRIVE?

The travel ways of this area were named for the type and amount of travel. A "road" was larger, longer, and more traveled. "Lanes" were smaller, shorter, and less traveled.

"Turnpikes" were toll roads. "Drives" came as a result of the automobile.

Thanks for that Harold. That is what I am looking for. My neighborhood is full of Lanes and Courts, but the roads that take traffic out/in to the neighborhood are Roads. Curious if there is something official about the naming convention?

There was the meeting in Geneva in 1912 that settled the naming issues, but failed to prevent WWI.

As you said, with U.S. Routes, low in the east, high in the west; low in the north, high in the south; odd run nominally north-south, even run nominally east-west. I-99 breaks this rule, and is an abomination.

Interstates reverse this: low south, low west.

Primary Interstates are also two digits: three-digit Interstates are either loops (even first digit) or spurs (odd first digit). But there are lots of exceptions to that, like I-270, which doesn't loop back to I-70 as you'd expect.

Kind of fun numerology.

Did anyone mention interstates? Odd numbered ones run north and south and even run east and west or generally so anyway.

I think you're both describing the same place.

At least from 1977, the Vienna Anita's was located at 147 Maple Avenue, which now the site of the Maple Ave restaurant. Below is a clip from the WaPo from May 15, 1977, by which time the Fairfax location had also opened. See also https://search.proquest.com/docview/146718352

At any rate, the Refreshment Stop in the first picture by Andy Ratlips seems to have been taken at the intersection of Maple Avenue and Lewis Street, which is several blocks to the southwest from 147 Maple.

It's since been demolished and replaced with a building that's housing a MyEyeDr.

Bowman's Court -- the last time I was out that way, (a while ago) it was still there. Correct an automobile repair place, there is a building that is in what was the parking area of the motel.

Its in the Dranesville area near where Dranesville Road ends at Route 7.
