And I would like to say a very Merry Christmas to all of my American friends on here.
And to give a good Happy Christmas to my English cousins as well.
I hope it's a good one for all of you.

Thank you all for the positive feedback that you have given me.
I appreciate it more than you realize.

This place had the best chicken. As far as burgers and hot dogs Howard Johnson's was the king but Red Barn had the chicken.

Pic of band playing in front of GIANT MUSIC is very cool! Spent a lot of time there late 60s and early 70s while attending Robert Frost and WT Woodson. There also, was a cool hangout in the corner of that shopping center, FAIRFAX BILLIARDS, where we would play pinball and shoot pool, while listening to the jukebox....

I remembered the bunny man would jump out at night at twinbrook, guinnea, and burke rd intersection, at that time guinnea rd was gravel and the county was still fairly rural. I remember thinking that it was cool that he was never caught.

As I posted on the "Weekend" thread:

If you have never heard of Eva Cassidy before, she was born and raised on the other side of the river, only a few miles away.
She played in various music venues in this area, including Mick Fleetwood's place, when he had one in Alexandria.
Her version of this song has been known to bring grown men to tears, myself included. And if you listen to it, you will understand why.
She died over 21 years ago of cancer, at the age of 33.
She had the voice of an angel.
I think this song may be appropriate for today.
She deserves to be remembered.

p.s. Every sound you hear in the song, is her. Guitar, strings, and especially her voice. No one else but her doing this. A masterpiece. And one of DC's own.

Looks like what is now the bike trail that runs through the area. Those brick homes are probably still there, so with some research you can find this location in Arlington County.

Photo is from 1950's or early 1960's ?

If that's the W&OD, then my guess would be in Arlington between Glebe Road and N. Qunicy Street, no later than 1951.
Some datapoint to consider, as I understand them:
1) That looks like one of the W&OD passenger cars.
2) Passenger service on the W&OD ended in 1951, so if 1) above is true, then the photo would be no later than 1951.
3) Historicalaerials.com has a 1951 imagery layer.
4) On the stretch of the railroad's Bluemont Line from Bluemont Junction to Rosslyn, there doesn't seem to be any stretch in the 1951 imagery where houses are bordering the railroad on both sides except between Glebe Road and N. Quincy Street, e.g. at North Vernon St., Stafford St. etc.
5) That includes the stretches on either side of Wilson Blvd near George Mason drive: no areas there with houses on both sides (otherwise I'd wonder if this might be the portion of the railroad that is now the Bluemont Trail in Arlington).
6) I'm not as familiar with the portion of the W&OD from Bluemont Junction to Alexandria. So on the one hand can't rule that out. But on the other I don't recall that they ran passenger service on the Bluemont Junction-Alexandria stretch.

David in FC, if you are a long time resident do you remember when FC City had a local ordinance against eating in your car? I think it was aimed mostly at Burger King. Never heard of anyone being charged with that violation.

When the W&OD originally constructed its connector line from Rosslyn to Bluemont Junction (below Falls Church) the connector line was double tracked. IIRC one line was pulled up in the thirties or forties. The house styles and housing density are consistent with the area you say, but it doesn't look like there was room enough for a second track in that right of way.

First heard of her in the late 1990s when I was living in a different part of the US. People in the jazz scene in D.C. knew all about her, and loved her, of course.

I'm not so sure about the city, but I know that most places have laws against both eating and drinking while driving. And by drinking and driving, I don't mean alcohol, I mean even drinking a coke or pepsi out of a cup with a straw while you are driving. It is a distraction, and you are not keeping full attention.
Kind of ironic that "lawmakers" have such a hard time passing laws against talking on your cellphone while driving. I guess because they do it so much themselves also.

Was it two lines the entire way? I still remember just one set of tracks crossing diagonally over Wilson Blvd.
After they pulled the tracks from the ground, the ones in the roadways were still there for years. Might still be there, just have been paved over.

Thanks for posting that video. I was hoping that someone else was going to add to what I had posted.
I downloaded that a long time ago, but it's good for others to hear a better description than what I gave. And to see a bit for themselves.
And Dassad, it is strange how some people from there, are more popular here, and some from here, are more popular there.
But she wasn't from Topeka, she was from only a few miles away.

This is a scan of a bumper sticker that Eva's sister Margret, (spelled correctly), sent to me a few years ago. I still have a few of them.

There was only one set of tracks crossing both Washington Blvd (where the I-66 trench goes under Washington Blvd at Glebe Rd) and Wilson Blvd (at George Mason Drive interesection). In between there was a single lane railroad bridge over North Buchanan St. just south of Fairfax Drive.

Ya, 2003 was when they closed. I lived around the corner and was a regular customer. Bought tons of camping gear there. One of the few places you could get true trail maps. Torn down only to be replaced by brick and mortar banks that could have been built anywhere. Fucking hate what Northern Virginia has become.

Story by Donna Manz
Tuesday, July 17, 2012
In 2007, a group of Oakton-area community supporters, along with Chevy Chase Bank and the owners of Appalachian Outfitters, saved the historic Oakton schoolhouse from demolition. With funding from Chevy Chase, the building that once stood on the corner of Hunter Mill Road and Rt. 123 was moved to its current location on Hunter Mill Road, just a few hundred yards from where it originally stood.

Now a Fairfax County Park Authority preservation site, the Oakton Schoolhouse abuts a Fairfax County field. The building and field make up the Oakton Community Park.

On July 14, the park authority, in concert with the Hunter Mill Defense League [HMDL] who researched the history, dedicated two large interpretive marker panels at the site.

"The signs will be here forever and ever," said HMDL researcher Charles Balch, after commenting on the background work that went into the effort.

Providence District Representative of the Fairfax County Park Authority Board Ken Quincy, Providence District Supervisor Linda Q. Smyth and Hunter Mill Defense League historian Charles Balch remarked on the history and future of the Oakton Schoolhouse. The vision for the schoolhouse is to open it up to the community.

The HMDL researched and funded the panels. Quincy called Charles Balch and Steve Hull of the HMDL the "cornerstones of this effort."

Speakers recognized Pat Price of Oakton, great-granddaughter of the first teacher of Oakton’s first schoolhouse, then called Flint HIll School, after the area that Oakton was then known as.

Mary Holland Bell [Snyder] became Flint Hill School’s first teacher in 1851. At that time, it was not legal to teach blacks to read or write. Bell was, Balch said, "before her time." She defied the law to teach a young black boy who waited on the steps of the school every day.

Price lives not far from the schoolhouse where her great-grandmother taught. Snyder is buried in Flint Hill Cemetery.

The marker panels describe the evolution of the three schools that were identified as Flint Hill and Oakton schools. The extant structure opened about 1873, serving as a schoolhouse until about 1913. As the building was outgrown, it served as a general store, eventually becoming Appalachian Outfitters. When the building was sold to Chevy Chase Bank, the bank agreed to pay for relocation and renovation.

Quincy announced that the schoolhouse is to be repainted in August.

Supervisor Smyth, who championed the preservation, recalled the cold January day when the Oakton community came out to watch the move from its previous location to its new home. She credited the HMDL for its dedication to preserving the past and the tranquility of the Hunter Mill corridor. "Thank you for all you do to raise awareness and preserve the history," Smyth said.

Appalachian Outfitters in Oakton was a godsend and only local place for purchasing hiking and camping supplies late 70's-early 80's. Internet and big store shopping options didn't exist. Thursday's PM visits were a ritual for the locals at AO to catch up and plan upcoming weekend adventures. Still recall the scent of new hiking boots on display that greeted you upon entering the store.

Thanks for posting those 3 pictures.
The third picture shows the huge oak tree that used to overhang Hunter Mill Road. I guess it's a bit smaller in this picture, but I had always wondered how old that thing was. Definitely sorry to see that gone.

yea, i remember that tree. I didn’t realize it was gone. But I guess the bank took it out.

I answered too quick. After looking at the picture you were talking about, my answer doesn’t make sense.

This was the tree I was thinking of. Its still there and not anywhere near the bank

As a kid, I liked them both. To me, they were kind of like a matching pair. I'm glad that the one is still there. They both always sat so close to the road.

That is a great old post card, and I don't think it has been posted before. If I am correct it was on the same side of the road as the present day Burger King, but was actually positioned where Pontiac dealership was built in the mid 1980's. Very close to Kinney Shoes.

The barefoot thing was always a myth, as far as statutes went. That doesn't mean that LEO didn't use it to freak out young drivers -- who may have been doing other shady things like kissing or listening to "ghetto music."

I love those old buildings. That store with the porch overhang and the way you could just pull off the road anywhere. They have a lot of traffic. Two shop stop: Get your gear, go next door for your groceries and go. Must be a Saturday. See the dog on the left - remember when dogs use to wander around without a leash?

I remember driving down 123 through Oakton in the peak of foliage with the massive oak trees lining both sides of the road. It was almost like being in a tunnel. Sad day when they started cutting them all down.

And I remember at AO people would post their names and the dates and locations of their hikes looking for companions to accompany them. Just posted on a cork board hanging on the front porch. Early social media!!!

The microwave tower is basically where RT 7 and RT 123 come together.

That photo was taken in the early 1960's and the terrain of Tyson's Corner has changed over time. Looks at that interchange via Google satellite and you will see the tower.

Yes it does. If you look at the tower in our current time, and compare it to the tower shown in the older photo, you will see that is the same tower.

The tower in the picture is at the same level as route 7.
The one at Tyson's corner stands at a much higher elevation.
Perhaps that's a picture of a previous tower or from another location.

So much has been changed in Tyson's Corner since the early 1960's Road levels have been raised and lowered in this area over time.

My earliest memory of this tower was in 1970 when my dad bought our new, wood covered Country Squire Station Wagon at Dick Herriman Ford in Tyson's Corner.

I believe that you saw a tower fifty years ago.
Nothing indicates that it was this one.
The one at Tyson's corner is also about a half mile away from route 7,not 50 feet.
I get it, you saw a tower as a kid and now you've decided that this is a picture of it.

Yep, same tower, different topography. A big change in the terrain when they shifted 123 to the north and put it on an overpass over Rt.7 circa 1964. (A remnant of the old path for 123 remains to this day, from next to the Woo Lae Oak restaurant, past the Crate and Barrel, and--across Intl Drive--behind the two gas stations, dead-ending now near the sign for the mall on 123. (Construction workers now park on this street and then dodge traffic, crossing 123 in the wintertime dark during the morning rush). The old Tyson's Corner intersection would have been just to the south of the 123 overpass over 7.From old imagery it looks as if the famous Myers store would have been where the southeast-bound lanes for Rt7 pass by the end of the offramp from northeast-bound 123.

I don't know why I didn't do this sooner. I blew the photo up to 300% and if you look to the left of the American Gas Station Sign you will see a small sign that reads "123" and on the right side the is another sign that reads"7"

That's the Tysons tower at what was known as Freedom Hill. The tower was constructed in 1952 by the army. In the picture, that is more than 50ft way. Same tower and same building on the west side of it that are still there today.

https://www.historicaerials.com/viewer has some aerial shots from '62 and '63.
In '64 you can see the interchange being built at 7/123 and that "American Motor Oil and Gas" station is gone at that point.

As a kid growing up near Fairfax hospital we would go out to eat most Sundays after church. It was 3 chefs for awesome chicken with fries and coleslaw, Lums for ollie burgers and Howard Johnson's for fried clams and sides. That was our 3 week rotation. It really pisses me off that all those places are now gone. I hear that there is one Howard Johnson's left but it is like a 10 hour drive away up in Lake George NY.
