Yes, Pasquale's was in the strip across from the McDonalds.
Used to eat there all the time.

I worked at CBSH in the late 70s. I went to one many years
later in the timeframe you're talking about, and it was very different.
For one thing, not AYCE! It was some last-ditch effort to try and
be a "real" seafood place, and crab was now too expensive to serve
infinite portions. It even had a salad bar! Then the last few
locations went under, and Chili's bought the remaining properties.
They still own the trademark on the name and stuff.

What is the name of it now? You say the "then" Rose Hill Pizza...I would be interested in trying it.

Its Mama mia pizza and that oven looks pretty old. Do you think it could really be the same oven from the 1966 yearbook ad? I think it might be.

Thanks for the Ft Belvoir pics. Makes me wonder if my dad might be in one of the pictures. That was one of the places he trained before finally being shipped off to England for the build up before the invasion.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I still have an old chest freezer in my basement that my parents bought in 1956, that still is in use to this day. 61 years old!
They don't make 'em like they used to.

That's even better than mine. Does it still work? because then it really be that much better. But even so, the style of them then was very cool. (Pun is intended a little)

I know a little bit about commercial kitchen equipment and if that is a electric pizza oven the heating elements, thermostats and door hardware are the only parts that are likely to fail and I bet that oven has had all that replaced a few times. I can guarantee that the thing is loaded with asbestos and most kitchen equipment companies would refuse to repair it because of that. Next time I am near Rose hill I want to stop and see that thing in action, so cool!

I too know about commercial equipment, I have been to many Pizza places that are still using 1940's rotary ovens etc. They are like Hobart Floor Mixers...you can't kill them.

Works like a charm...so heavy and well insulated it hardly ever has to run the compressor. Mine is the one on the right in the AD

A few gas station "freebies". Do any places still offer any of these for free like they used to?
You might be able to pick up a calendar for next year, and a cheap ice scraper at some places though still.

What are those long pieces of paper with the names of states on them?
(Yes, I'm joking! Spent many hours as a kid helping navigate on road trips. Was a useful skill...for a while. Not so much nowadays!)

Traveling as a passenger, we were headed back to Arlington from a music festival. We stopped here and got breakfast because it was the wee early hours of the morning.

Man! I thought we were in the boonies. Actually, we were! We were in the boonies!

Hey, this is a great thread/forum! Any of you guys go to St Bernadette's? I found this picture of Sister Marie Immaculada the principal back then. This picture struck some serious fear in my heart. That woman would would beat the living hell out of you when you screwed up. This was 1968 but she was there quite a few years. She put the fear of God into my soul!

A house in what is now Falls Church City. It was still a part of Fairfax County for most of it's existence, so I think it deserves an inclusion here.
Built around 1840, it was on a huge piece of land that had about 1/4 mile front yard down to Broad Street.
Let's just say that the property is a bit smaller today.
This first picture is obviously an old historic one, and the second picture is from it's Wikipedia page.

Suggestion. Your home is awesome... the utility lines look like shit. For about a grand you can have your utility lines buried from the pole to your home. My neighbor did it last year. If I was going to stay in my house I would have it done.

GREAT pic ! !

I love the signs for $14 tires and add-on A/C for cars. Our 70's Impala had an after-market A/C that reduced the knee-room under the dash by about 3 inches. It was similar to the one in this pic, but it covered the full width of the car.

The under counter a/c's were usually a dealer installed gig...BTW, The Tire sign says "Sale, Save up to $14.00." 14.00 in the 70's was a little too cheap.

T's for the price catch & correction... oops : )

When I first had to get tires in the late 80's (at NTW** in Newington, not NTB), they were in the $65+ range. And I still remember mom complaining about the big A/C as 'taking up too much space & making soo much noise".

** i can still remember NTW's jingle on radio commercials:

"At N..T..W.., we know tires..."

Tires have been pricey for a while...in college I would buy retreads...had a pair mounted, then 30 minutes later the tread peeled off at 75 MPH on the way to a concert w/ 8 people in my wagon. Changed it in 5 minutes tops...like a pit crew. Maybe was the "vitamins' we had taken.

My Dad had Montgomery Wards auto center at Springfield mall put a add-on air conditioner in his 1965 Ford Galaxie. It cooled very well but it was noisy as hell and would drip a little condensate water on the front passenger's left foot.

Ah, yes, the dripping A/C. Wasn't just aftermarket! In the Good Old Days, you could count on that, and on power windows crapping out when you needed them (say, when it started raining).

Nowadays both are so reliable that we hardly think about them. That *is* progress.

Great pic of the vent window. Looks to be a Ford Mustang - 1967?

Great photos and memories.

I’m 38 years old, and I never thought I’d be the guy who started some conversations with ‘I remember when...’

I consider myself the last of the generation who would call themselves natives to the area, or even Virginian, but I guess every previous generation has said the same thing.

Very cool Fran...I would say WAY before your time. It was a gas station also....

from the Alex Patch..."I've seen all of Hybla Valley change," he said. "… I've just seen the evolution of things. Places long past include a drive-in movie theater and the Twin Barrel gas station near Buckman Road."

Caldor went out of business in 1999, so that gives a time frame. Looking at the cars in the parking lot, looks like mid to late 1980's.

Which side of RT 1 is that? East or West?

Can't place it.

Also see a "Drug Emporium" to the far right, I thought that was a mid 80's place?

As you head south on RT 1 the shopping center is on the right. Drug Emporium is still around in a few cities in Virginia.

In the mid 70's Thieves Market was there and a discount dept store in Hybla Valley that was there in the late 60's and the whole place was more ramshackle then this picture. The long building has Rt 1 to the left of the picture

Miss that Chesapeake Bay Seafood House that came later across the center

Belleview where the Roys is today and Spokes bike shop and that picture is early 70's or late 60's

That doesn't look like Springfield Mall in the '70s. The railings all had dark, heavy wooden caps on them -- like a 2x6 with walnut stain.

That pic is from a shopping mall in Monroeville, Pennsylvania. That shot is from the movie Dawn of the Dead filmed in 1978. If you look closely at the pic, you will see the human figures are actually zombies.

Springfield Mall had another type of zombie wandering through the building.

Another interesting tidbit - The Brown Derby was a favorite haunt for the filming crew after the days filming was over.

Late 1985 or early 1986 at the earliest.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/business/1985/02/06/caldor-to-open-first-area-store/1ab2c6e0-8ea8-416a-8993-110d935a197b/?utm_term=.acf73330106e

In the picture, Caldor is already there and things already look dilapidated.
I am guessing the picture is from the 1990s.

Fran Conia you made my day. I was very young when we drove past the barrel place. It was easy to remember as two men were having a hell of a fist fight in the parking lot. I think it was around 1965. It was close to the drive in movie theater.

Yes, it is an upscale furniture store, can't remember the name. I think it starts with a D.
Before, it was a GM training center. I took many courses there back in the 80's.

Diagonal parking spots. Park the cars on a 45 degree angle so they can make the task easier.
