Fairfax County uses a standardized addressing scheme, so maybe. I don't know when that was introduced, but surely it involved some renumbering.

I know that the number + "first four" of the street name are unique. So if there are both Peach Street and Peachtree Road, then only one will have a "322" address. Obviously no good way to relate this to the existing question, but it is suggestive that the house might still exist, but not be numbered 322 any more.

I think this one could be it..322 Van Buren..built in 1952...check out where the chimney is in original pic and where it is in remodeled home. The neighborhood has some older homes still.

Morris-Day did a major remodel on that house about 10 years ago. It is now valued at 1.1 million.

I know that when I was young Blanche (early 60s, I know I'm OLD), Fairfax re-numbered and re-named streets getting rid of duplicates in names -- the fire truck and ambulances needed to be going to the right place...

Anyway, our street name stayed the same since it was the first in the county to have that name but the number was changed from 3 digits to 4 digits. I still remember the old information since my Mom made sure I knew where I lived.

The theatre in the Heritage "mall" had the hardest seats. I rarely went to a movie there but remember seeing "All the President's Men" there.

Bob Woodward wishes he looked as good as Robert Redford.

I bet they were going to the Occoquan Festival at the top of that hill.

Funny. I’ve never seen any pictures of that.

I can't find any pictures of their stores, but does anyone else remember The Pop Shoppe ??

One was on Rt. 1 in the 7800 block in Hybla Valley, in front of what is now a Pep Boys.

It was a converted gas station and the two service bays were 'the store' (I loved Black Cherry and hated Cream). The building is gone, but with Google maps/satellite you can still see the concrete slabs in the parking lot where gas pumps and underground storage tanks were.

The watercolor of Fairfax Courthouse a few posts up is not very accurate, when comparing it with pictures of the time. Did that yankee son of a bitch paint it from memory before going to Pohick to vandalize the church?

Jacobs Rock is in the reservoir of Occoquan above the dam. They were doing what the young people did, before, then , and now, and they did not need to be at a music fest to blow weed or guzzle wine

Not sure what your definition of "that old" is but I remember that Pop Shoppe in Hybla Valley as mid seventies. Don't think it made it to the eighties.

Um, I know someone very well, I won't mention my name to keep me from being incriminated. But, this nameless person once walked down the steps of the United States Capitol building smoking a joint with some friends.
But, don't tell anybody.
So, you don't have to go far to be able to do that.

Pop Shoppes was a Canadian company started in 1969 that ended up doing business in 12 US states. They went under in 1983. A new company adopted the name in 2004 and is currently doing business in parts of Canada.

In the 1970s my big brother took me here after the new Fairfax high school had opened and GMU took the place over. This is where I first used a crazy device called a "computer". There were no screens back then, everything you did was printed on paper or saved on magnetic tape.

Ha! Ha! I can't say we at Ft. Hunt had the most Notorious Reputation for "Academy Life", I honestly thought that was Groveton! But I will say this: many classmates were given ultimatums. With Jail or MILITARY. All of the ones I knew chose the Service. And many of them retired after 20 & 30 years. Full Bird Col's, Major's, you name it. I was extremely proud of them later in their lives. We all came from Military backgrounds then. Those students were about 17 at the time, & had serious charges pending. Breaking & Entering (Cars), receiving stolen goods, selling stolen goods from the theft of car parts, etc. I never knew one who turned it down. But didn't you ever wonder why they wouldn't let you see under the hood of their car's when they raced up & down the unfinished 495 beltway that was still under construction? Now you know!
Also, my family bought our house on Bluedale St in 1961. We lived there 50 years. Daddy paid $23,000.- in 1961. Mom sold it (for less than the appraisal of $560,000.-!) For $516,000.00 in 2003. A nice little profit! Everyone back then lived an average of 50 yrs in our parents house's as we in turn became their care takers. Beautiful area. We had the BEST School. Besides My. Vernon. And were honored when the attended our school from 1973 - 1975 upon completion of the renovated version that stands today! Many long time, lasting friendships hold up today! Thanks Guys! Ft. I'm pretty sure that plot of land had a golf driving range on it until about 2002 or so...and now has a low rise office park on it.

Just "up the hill" to the right, shown in this picture, is that Lazy Susan?

And then of course, out of the picture, but maybe half a mile north up Rt 1...Hillbilly Heaven!

Sorry the picture didn't show up, but just refer back to this conversation, where "This Was It" was indicated via red arrow.

Thanks for the pic of Lee-Graham park signage. I played LL Baseball there about ten years after that picture was taken.

The best thing about Lee Graham is that there was (and still is) a community pool there, and there was a snack bar that opened on each side to serve the pool goers on one side and the Little Leaguers on the other side. Great snack bar stuff, too!

I remember the one in Hybla Valley.

Yes, the Black Cherry soda was absolutely their best offering.

The Popeye's was an Arby's at that time and the Pop Shoppe was right next to it.

My dad, Clyde Phelps, was a Gov't teacher at Ft. Hunt when you were there.
He was a good dad. he passed away in 2013.

I went to a few Ft. Hunt/Mt. Vernon games in the mid-70s and sat on the Ft. Hunt side. I attended MV later.

Hornet, Thank you very much...that is awesome work. Yea the original house is small, but the new one is ugly as hell and takes up the whole lot.

That was also about the time that the multi-plex trend got going. Some theaters divided into smaller spaces (poorly, most of the time), but others just shut down.

Saw Carl Bernstein speak once in the '80s. He said that his only gripe with the movie was that "that guy was too short."

Well, if you think about it, back then, everyone had either a fuel injected Chevy, or a Chrysler Hemi.

Anyone else remember Super TV from the early 80's? (Media General arrived in my neighborhood in '86.)

About half to 3/4 of the houses had these antennas. From what I can recall, we got one movie offered each night; or was it just Fridays & Saturdays ?

There's another thread on here from 2 1/2 yrs ago that mentions it --

Agreed, based on the cars. In fact, I looked for MY car -- my wife and I had our "pre-marital encounter weekend" (she wanted to get married at her parents' church, which required it) at that Days Inn right about that time!

The low rise apartment buildings just visible in the upper left...those just got torn down about a year ago, new mid rise apartments now almost finished in their place.

And immediately to the left, out of the picture, there used to be 3 high rise apartment buildings...and, I believe a small association office building.

Now there are two, and the office building is gone...torn down for new WW Bridge.

I say NO...Chesapeake Bay never had linen when I went or chairs like that. I also don't remember a Fairfax location.

I have no doubt that this is a photo of a seafood restaurant, but it is not Chesapeake Seafood.

Chesapeake was good, but it was a pig trough nevertheless. Designed to be hosed down to clean it up after a 12 hour crab leg orgy.

There was a CBSH in Fair City mall at one time, early 80s. I remember getting fitted for a suit at Sam's Tailors and going to Chesapeake afterwards but I don't remember what it looked like. I went to the one in Springfield quite a few times and remember bare wooden tables.

The CBSH on Rt. 1 in Hybla Valley was where the Post Office now stands.

There were only plain wooden chairs and tables, and nothing on the walls. It had three sections with about 100-120 tables, and then a fourth, non-smoking area, with about 30-40 tables.

P.S.: We made $3.35/hr busing tables in the early 80's, while the "waitron's" (as we had to call them back then) made $2.15/hr + tips.

I thought it is where some "green onion" buffet is...if you are looking at MVC Video from Rt 1, to the left...

Across the street from the Elks club, which I think used to be a Steak N' Ale?

No?

I've not been down there in years... But when looking at google/maps, I'm pretty sure the Green Olive Buffet to the South of MVC was a Sea Galley in the 80's.

Another 1/2 block to the south is now a bank, a Safeway & Ledo's w/ their parking lot ~~ that used to be soccer and baseball fields.

Yes, there was a Chesapeake Bay Seafood House in the mall that used to be across from Paul VI. It was a walk through mall at the time not a strip mall. It is now a Super H-Mart.

The Fairfax City Chesapeake Seafood House location was across the street from the old Fairfax High School.

There was a location in Falls Church at Loehmann's Plaza.

There was a place called Pasquale's Pizza that was in that general area if I remember correctly.

By the way, I moved here in 1987 and probably did not go there until the early 90's. So it was there at least until the early 90's.

That “mall” was a very strange, dark corner. I thought it was weird.

Yes, thank you for refreshing my memory. I was thinking it was Fair city mall that had Chesapeake Bay Seafood but you are correct and Sam's tailor shop was in that little mall too.

Wow! We stayed about a week at the Springfield Howard Johnson's in the summer of 1967 while we waited for our house in Franconia to be completed and for our moving truck to bring our stuff. We are practically brothers! I was 7 years old at the time. My Dad had landed a new job at Cameron Station.

No, this photo is not of the Chesapeake Bay Seafood House in Fairfax City. I worked there from 1985-1988.

My parents had no interest in cable TV, my mother still only watches Over The Air TV to this day.

When I was in High School I was into radios and electronics and purchased a kit for like $25-$30 for receiving Super TV. It used a standard 1 lb coffee can and had a circuit board you had to build that mounted right on the back of the coffee can. The can when inside a piece of schedule 40 PVC pipe and there was about a 3 foot piece of threaded rod with a bunch of washers and spacers that mounted on the threaded rod.

I set this up on my roof and ran a piece of CATV coax to a small power supply and tuner box that was near the TV I had in my room. An old hand me down 12" TV as I recall.

I was living large, had one HBO program often only at night. But it cost be only for the kit. Super TV was not scrambled at the time. A few years later I think they started to scramble the feed and the kit was no longer useful.

I recall the same thing happening with the CATV system, at first the channels were in the clear, the they started to scramble some of the premium channels. I recall Media General has the 2 coax system, or what was recalled the "Twin 450 MHz" system because the equipment, amplifiers and coax was not much good above 500 MHz, so to get the 144 channels or what ever was offered they needed to run a "twin" plant with the cable boxes with the dual inputs and the switching relay.

Media General started to scramble only 1 of the 2 coax feeds and this feed usually had the premium programs. These early cable boxes were also addressable and could support Pay Per View and/or On Demand programming as I recall. I had a good friend that built out the entire Media General back end system with the 2 large microwave towers and Head End systems, one at West Ox Road next to the FCPS school bus lot and the other in Merrifield now directly behind/next to the Mosaic District. If you look at the Angelica Theater outdoor screen you will see the large tower right behind it that dates fro the early 1980's.

I even recall the days when different CATV descramblers were available, some systems used simple scrambling or "Beepers" that could be filtered out, Media General I think used a Video Inversion or removed the Video Sync sync single and you could mail order a box to correct this and be able to steal the programming. Even recall dealing with DirecTV cards and being able to download Bin files and flash over the cards for the DirecTV boxes and get free programming as late as the early 90's. DirecTV was aware of this and kept trying to up their game but it just became more inconvenient when they started to change the algorithms and coding every few weeks. With the good old Internet, still in Dial Up days for many people, you could email the Bin files that would work to unlock the DirecTV boxes.

Many years without paying for service until the technology advanced and the service providers spent money to counter any theft. Lived in Rockville for a while back in the late 80's and remember Montgomery Cable in 1987 set up a Sting operation during the Mike Tyson vs James Smith fight that was aired on Pay Per View with a LOT of hype. As the fight started, right when the first punch was almost ready to connect, Montgomery Cable flipped a switch that made the current illegal decoders not work. Montgomery Cable had staffed up their call center and had Caller ID set up for all the foolish thieves that were dumb enough to call in and complain that there was a problem with their service. A classic move from a cable company!!! I saw this first hand.

These were the days, the Wild West of cat and mouse, early days of technology and work arounds. Sorry to see that technology has advanced to the point that some of the fun is gone!

I appears like they are pushing the helicopter onto a pallet so that it can be lifted safely onto a truck so as to not damage it.

That Burger Chef was on Franconia Rd just past Beulah going towards Springfield.. It was split in half, one side a Thai restaurant one side Mexican.

I love this thread. But I really wish it could be improved. What the fuck is LetsRock responding to? Why do 'quotes' not include the date of the message someone is responding to? I do not want to have to go back through 80+ pages to figure it out.

Keep a civil tone in your comments - This is a friendly thread.

The picture you refer to is a group of Fairfax County Police Officers moving a helicopter.

This is not perfect, but is is enjoyable to read the comments.

That pic of the oven and location of the register has not changed 1 bit at the then Rose Hill Pizza, 52 years now since the pic was taken. I got a steak sub there a month ago, and I bet the Blodgett pizza ovens are original

One of the few friendly threads on FXU the other may be the wildlife pics and it should stay that way
