I would guess the date is in the mid to late 1970's. If someone could make out the movie on the theater sign, we could get a more specific date.

I used to race my BMX bike at Stalit raceway - It was open roughly between 1979 and 1982.

I may have known you or someone in your family. I grew up right next to Dogue Creek - at the end of Buckner Rd, next the 15th fairway of Woodlawn Country Club Golf Course.

You say you left in the area in the early 2000s. The Woodlawn Stables, which were right behind the Dogue Creek sign you posted, are gone and Rt 1 runs right through the former stables property. It is a trip driving through there as it goes behind Woodlwawn Baptist church instead of in front of it.

The first one, maybe. But the second one is on Annandale Rd, isn't it? The old Jefferson Theater?

Its the shopping center at the corner of 50 and Annandale Road before the wing with the 31 flavors and the Jefferson Theatre (now Goodwill) was built.

I don't remember the street-name of Buckner... But just looked it up & I had friends that lived 2-streets over on Patton Blvd. Three kids, all with the same initials, and I was friends with the two youngest. In the early 80's, they moved a little closer to Mt. Vernon H.S. And their neighbor towards the end of Patton also has/had a kid our age .. that family owned a still popular retail establishment.

On Google maps, the N/E branch of Dogue Creek ends just east of Gateshead Rd., but it actually continues north and divides the back yards between Richmond Ave. and Mt. Zephyr Dr. ~ that's where I grew up.

The few blocks at the north tip of Mt. Zephyr Dr., made up of Quisenberry Dr., Nalls Rd., etc., didn't exist back then; that's where the N.E. tip of the creek began as just a trickle. And one of those *new* front yards is where we used to have a tree-house when it was still all just woods.

If I'm right, the rail-yard was between the (now) Beltway and Eisenhower Ave., and the pic. was facing Four Mile Run.. NW of the Rt. 1 & 495 interchange.

I have 2 possible answers for what is in the circled area.

Looking at the locomotive I suspect the picture was taken in the post Civil War 19th century.

This freight yard was in Alexandria near the current U.S. District Courthouse on Mill Street. The rise of land off in the distance is either the hill that the Masonic Temple is on, or is possible the hill at the top of North Kings Hwy.

I don't know the exact position of the freight yard and roundhouse, so it could be either I guess.

On the extreme right of the photo is the old railroad roundhouse in Alexandria. It was located about where Whole Foods is now. The rest of the photo I can’t tell you about, only the location.

I remember a Trak Auto there at one point, Table Talk Is one of the only places left.

Joe Theismann’s is still there a little to the north, always a good spot after attending Lodge at the Masonic Temple.

The Roundhouse in the picture was located immediately west of Henry Street between Duke and Wolfe Street. The one you are thinking of that is further west was constructed around 1900. The picture looks to be one of a series that were made of the area around the roundhouse during the Civil War and is looking west towards where the Masonic Temple is now located. I believe at that time there were some houses on Peyton Street, but I don't believe those are what we are seeing. Also my 1870s map of the area doesn't show any line of structures in that area related to the water reservoir that was located on the hill.

Fort Elsworth was constructed by Union forces on the hill. The hill was also a common camp sight for Union forces, and there were quartermaster facilities operating out of the area. My guess is that these are either quarters for officers or troops at the fort (similar to the one at Fort Ward), offices for quartermasters or bakeries.

Its the shopping center on Route 7 west bound just past Jefferson Street.

EJ Korvettes apparently had the entire shopping center since the corner building is the Korvettes Food Center. Thy had a great record department.

There was a Giant on that corner for a while before being rebuilt in the parking lot next to Goodwin House.

I'm really loving the Baileys Crossroad pictures. Was the fire house located where the shopping center with the TJ is now or was it on the other side of Route 7?

Thanks for these great pictures!

The construction of Dulles is one of the things that helped to keep the W&OD Railroad alive for a few more years.
A large part of the concrete that went into the construction of Dulles came from the cement factory that is just out of sight in David in FC's Shreve road pictures.
Built right next to the railroad, it was a good location to help transport the material.

I answered my own question regarding the fire house on Route 7 in the various Bailey's Crossroads pictures -- I have a very old ADC map of Northern Virginia that I look at to see what things were like in the past, and it has a fire house about where the Baimianrestaurant/Babies R Us is located.

This is something that is just on the very edge of my memory and its looks like the building was taken when the "cloverleaf" was put in at Columbia Pike and Leesburg Pike.

Sleepy can you confirm?

I would like to touch on several items.

The picture of Fairfax Hospital Reminds me of the time While working for the C&P Telephone company in 1969 I was injured and partially (temporarily) paralized and being treated at the hospital. There was a cute student nurse on night duty, the hospital didn't have that much for the students to do while they were on night duty. This nurse student hung around my room and after two weeks I was able to leave the hospital, but not before she gave me her phone number. a couple of weeks later I was well enough to ask her out and we dated about three times over the next few weeks. on X-Mas night, she asked me to marry her, and fortunately I was smart enough to say yes. She is still the love of my life.

Shortly after my family moved to McLean in 1958, a McDonalds opened near the intersection of 123 and Old Dominion.I remember it mostly because they advertized the 47 cent meal. A hamburger, fries, and a shake. God only knows how many of them I ate.

On many an afternoon I and my family would drive out to the Colvin run area to get a taste treat at Thelmas. She ran a little shop and gas station and made her own ice cream. You haven't visited Great Falls until you ate ice cream at Thelmas. Unfortunately Thelma is gone now so if you didn't go there you have missed the treat.

Back in the early days of Dulles Airport, there wasn't that much traffic on the access road. A bunch of teens had painted two stripes on the road. One line on the road to the airport, and one on the return road. At that time you could drive out to the airport, take the Cargo exit go over the bridge and get onto the return road back to McLean. The two striped were a measured 32 miles apart. Doing a "CARGO" run was a test of your cars speed. The run had to be observed by at least five people, one of which had to be in the car with you, to make sure you didn't take a shortcut. Out and back in under 16 minutes was a winner. My 1956 beefed up Pontiac won my cargo in 1965.

It is a wonder I wasn't killed on the Dulles Access Road. Doing 145mph in a car with 4 wheel drum brakes, not wearing seat belts, all the windows down.

We jumped on the access road in Tyson's Corner, and let that 440 Charger go. The spedo was a 150 version but I am not sure how accurate they were in 1969 cars. The car held 145 with no effort, and could have gone faster, but the speed scared the crap out of me. Ran a steady 145 mph from just outside Tyson's to Herndon, I slowed down to cut through the airport.

Dragged along at 70 mph back to RT 123

Many thanks for the link, there is so much that I have forgotten that has changed while living most of my life here in Northern Virginia.

My mom took classes at the old GMU building in Baileys Crossroads which was a former FCPS building. It looked a lot like the Floris School in Frying Pan Park.

I thought McKay opened in 1956 - I could be wrong

Britt opened in 1959

Oh, so the photo is inverted? That why I was confused as Rt. 123 runs along the right side of the country club not the left side as you are heading North.

Awesome photos. Long shot, but can anyone tell where the one on the Access Road was taken? Seems like it might be by Rt. 28, since that overpass/culvert looks brand-new and there wouldn't have been much new out there getting farther from Dulles, but that's a SWAG. If so, then I guess it's basically parallel to the Hyatt now?

Thanks for all the great pictures of local theatres.

The Annandale Theatre really was a Cathedral of Cinema.

Smoky and the Bandit played for months at the Bradlick Theatre and I remember being home from college -- seeing it on December 23 and knowing I had all my Christmas shopping to complete the next day.

Good Times!

Since Alexandria was a part of Fairfax Co. until 1870, the old photo of the Roundhouse fits perfectly.

I downloaded two pictures from the Library of Congress, the first was your photo but a higher resolution so I could zoom in. It appears to be a building, but I also found an artist's rendition of the area during the Civil War. I have circled what building I think it is, since the description on the first photo states that it is the west side of the Roundhouse, photographer is facing east.

Is there a reason so many theaters closed between 1984 -1985?

All the drive movie theaters closed as well.

We would grab a case of Bud from the 7-11 at Cedar and Lee Hwy, some tacos from Tippy's, and hit the Lee Hwy Dive In.

If we were out in Centreville we went to Super 29

I'm thinking in the early 80's, VCR's started getting popular and a lot of video stores started to open. Why go to a theater when you could sit at home watching movies.

From what I understand multideck parking will soon inhabit the former Springfield cinema and Circuit City site. A drive in movie theater will NOT be accompanying the parking. However , you will be able to park your car in a spacious and relaxed atmosphere....

If I recall there was also a Long John Silvers fish restaurant on the site in front of Circuit City.

Went to High School with Erol's daughter. He had a small TV repair shop in Arlington and happened onto the Video Rental craze at the right time and made it big. Then got into computers and Internet dial up, but I think this may have been when he peaked, cannot recall if he sold out or went bust after that.

As I recall Erol was an immigrant or 1st generation American that made it big for a while. Hopefully he did not put it all on the line and made something out of his small TV Repair business that he grew to a big company.

Interesting !!

I remember the Erol's store in Woodbridge where my dad bought our first VCR in '82 ('83?). And then, among others, my local Woodlawn store, where I went for movies almost daily.

I knew they were replaced by Blockbuster, but had no clue of the details...

From Wikipedia: (at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erol%27s )

"Erol's Inc. was a video rental and electronic sales and repair company founded in the early 1980s. By 1985, Erol's was the country's largest privately owned videocassette rental company.[1] It was sold to Blockbuster Video for $40 million in 1990. ...... etc.

While the Erol's Wiki info is mostly correct, it leaves out the early years.

I used to drive by where Erol lived and his work van with Erol's TV was always parked outside the house outside of business hours. I think he had his original shop in Arlington as I recall. For some reason I remember "Since 1962" painted on the side of the van.

For an immigrant that busted his ass, selling his video rental company to Block Buster for $40 Million right before the video tape rental market start to die out, he did well, not sure if he survived the computer and ISP business, there was a lot of growth, not sure if he could stay on top of the wave or crashed and burned.

the old style lights, flashlight bulb filament, rotating, were soothing, informational but not OVERPOWERING

today's lights have two major flaws:

#1 they are so bright that at night they block vision of a dangerous traffic situation for which the cop car is on-scene to handle (neon flash bright on blackness makes everything hardly visible. i just think engineers in the past weren't that stupid, is the thing)

#2 they flash at a rate causing EPILEPSY (that combined with the neon flash effect is bad). drunk drivers exhibit a kind of epilepsy and react badly to the flashing: it is this which is likely the reason drunk drivers "brains shut off" and steer into cop cars instead of away from them (the drunks on highways passing traffic pull-overs - many tragedies due to that). i bet if tested that any bright flashers (amber road maintenance or police) cause drunks to steer wildly.

#4 the effect together causes allot of endangerment which is backed by many accidents, deaths, and arrests: CAUSED BY THOSE DAMN UPGRADED LIGHTS

#5 visual clues. to have depth perception the physics of light needs to illuminate an area so the mind can process depth. omitting lessons: the situations above eliminate visual clues - which is very dumb to do on highways or even unlit intersections with a traffic incident - even at slow speeds and people who are not drunk: people react dumbly when they can't see and there is an unusual situation they can't see.

it became popular to make brighter lights, using more radio shack electronics over the years. electronics hobby addict stuff.

for some reason the police just let them keep doing it without TESTING what these thoughless hobby hacks are doing to their cop cars, in my opinion

today we have something like a NEON FLASH BULB lights - which i feel never would have been legal in the past despite the fact they were available for purchase

I spoke with the State of Virginia (gov office and state police) about the matter, but they were absolutely obstinate and oblivious in hearing the short call.

------------------

(many safety things were tested in California, and Maryland - MD made the Amber turn signals a specific color code in one such test. today: import cars don't even use amber turn signals - so if a light is out and they tap breaks you may think it's a turn signal (no reason not to). i think we're getting billed for testing still but i don't think they are testing any longer.)

(I have not been an avid electronics hobbyist but occasionally have looked in since the 1980's. Back in the 1980's and 90's there were many "diagrams" pushed by parts makers for people to make "the better cop car flasher bar" potentially sellable to police. It was a pot head thing to do to build flashing lights and think you'd be selling it to police. Or was it? Are the police dept. on pot buying that 1980's fad hobby junk and putting it in emergency situations??)

unfortunately I won't be able to product any images of the "emergency flasher" electronics diagrams from the 80's. However just trust me: it was a fad and a thing used to help lure kids into taking up electronics as a hobby, just as it is for computers telling kids that their 3d printer is going to print electricity and their robots are going to "do their work for them" (that kinda advertising)

who in the world put these 1980's pot hobby electronics into emergency situations?

did no one ever ask where these "flashers" were coming from?

OK, so not really a picture, but I guess it is from the past, about 50 years ago.
The Mamas And The Papas did a version of the song Dancing In The Streets. It's on their Greatest Hits album.
At the end of the song, they kind of start to get a bit goofy, and I think it's Michelle and Denny start rattling off names of cities and towns.
At about the 3:34 mark, she mentions "Alexandria", and he says that "that's in Virginia", then a few seconds later at 3:38 she says "Falls Church?", and he asks "where's that?"

322 Groves, Van Buren or Wrens Way.

Couldn't find exact house. As you know, like torn down/renumbered/redeveloped.

"For about 3% of people with epilepsy, exposure to flashing lights at certain intensities or to certain visual patterns can trigger seizures.

This condition is known as photosensitive epilepsy.
