Just add a bit more hair on the side of my face and chin (but not too much), and you might be a bit closer.

Ah, you flatter me. I was never that clean-cut--closer to #4, in appearance anyway! (Not claiming I ever had anything like his comic chops. Nor the heroin thing, of course...)

P.S. Damned glad to meet you.

The Hot Shoppes at Columbia Pike and Route 7 never became a BBB.

The picture on Page 79 is the BBB that was at the corner of Columbia Pike and Walter Reed Drive - current location of the $1 bus stop -- and diagonally across the intersection from the Arlington Theatre.

Actually there is a VW in that picture. If you look on the first row, 3 cars up you will see the VW next to what looks like a brown International Scout.

Did you notice the octane ratings of the gas?
Regular is 94, Super is 97, and Royal is 100 octane!
Very cool pictures of Vienna. 20 years ago I actually used to work in the converted garage of a guy's house on Glyndon St., but on the other side of where the W&OD tracks were. I used to make electric guitar pickups there.

While we're in Vienna, let's go back in time about 107 years ago and take a trip to the Post Office.
Taken from Shorpy.com, a great website for old pictures from around the country. I had to cut the size of this picture in half, so that people wouldn't yell.

On the same side...just up from Kinney Shoes. Cheap gas for the 1968 Impala Wagon.

Very cool photos. Brings back a few memories. The Vienna location is the one that I used to go to, since it was the closest.
The photo must have been taken sometime in the '70's, because I think by about 1980, they had moved the "smoking accessories" to a small room down a hallway to the left when you walked in the door.
Tokemaster eventually changed their name to Smokemaster, (for whatever reason......), and that's where I got the one that I used to put jellybeans in. (Very hidden joke for that one).
Bought lots of records from local bands at that place. The Slickee Boys, Martha Hull and The Steady Jobs, David Van Allen, Tru Fax and The Insaniacs, The Rosslyn Mountain Boys, and others.

Yes, but not the same building. Penguin Feather was in an old wooden house, which sat back a bit farther from the road. You could park in front of it.
They tore down that place and the built the new place where Anita's is now.

Another great shot Fran. A lonely VW is on the far right about 5 rows from bottom. Not surprising as this is circa 1961! :)

Indeed it was important, I guess it was one of the first of its kind. So much so that President Eisenhower brought Nikita Khrushchev there during the first visit of a Soviet Premier.

That was 1953 - anyone remember?

I took the photo up to 500% and looked for any VWs. I could only find a grayish auto the looks similar to a VW.

Check to the far right of the photo at the 3 o'clock position.

The front of the sign says Baileys Cross Roads Shopping Bag -- this is (was?)on the south side of Route 7 right after you go over Columbia Pike heading east. The piece of land that is between Route 7 and Seminary Road before you get up to the light at Carlin Springs (Glen Carlin?).

I believe its still there.

To add to causeican's great photo of the construction of Key Bridge, and the very descriptive caption that was provided (lol), I thought that I would second the motion with this photo as well.
Taken, I guess a bit before the previous one, judging from the progress.
Another one that I saw on Shorpy.com.

I see the old Southern States down the street. It's been converted to a strip mall that includes Chipotle and Starbucks.

Thanks, But I still kind of like causeican's picture better. It shows that part of Georgetown as still "suburban" even if it's officially in the city limits. Still lot of trees and open fields. Not the same as it looks today.

It's still there. Maybe the parking lot in the other picture made it look bigger than it actually is.
I've never been there, but I know that Bill Clinton visited there soon after his second inauguration.

Hope nothing happened to the Lincoln with the back doors that open for ladies to step out easily either.

Andy Ratlips, any date on the photo? That Phillips 66 has been a bank forever, and the intersection of 236 and Braddock was a long-time menace until VDOT put up turn lights on 236 that only allow for lefts on the green arrows.

Wonder when the idiots will decide its okay to have those flashing yellow arrows there? A step backwards IMHO.

Also Columbia Baptist is still there but no longer part of the Southern Baptist Convention.

Blanche, I would say the photo is @70/71. I barely remember the Gas station also as we would slide at Pinecrest all the time.

Thanks Sleepy --

I'm thinking some Jeffersonians -- TJ yearbooks when the school was for NORMAL people -- has the Phillips 66 pictured in sponsorship advertisements in the early 70s. In fact, there may be one in some of the past pages of this post.

I can see that the C&P frame building is being enlarged (brick building on left hand side of 236) in the photo.

Jerry's Ford wasn't built yet and the shopping center was still the Little League ballpark!

So your timeframe is correct.

Also the Esso/Exxon just out of the photo on the corner was torn down recently to make room for a TD Bank. The robbers will now have a choice of banks to knock over on that corner...

I clipped this picture because it looks like DC with the Potomac on one side of camp and the canal on the other, but I don’t have any information on it. The website where I found it (link below) refers to one of their pictures as being Fort Hunt but it is unclear if this is that picture.

Can anyone here identify the location of this camp? It’s a cool-looking picture. Can you imagine coming back to camp at night and trying to find your tent?

The following was clipped from the same website where it was posted under the picture.

"After WWI, the federal government had set aside funds that were to be used to provide "Bonuses" for wartime service. The Bonuses were to be paid in 1945. Economic conditions were so desperate during the great depression that veterans marched on Washington in 1932, in 1933, and again in 1934 to demand early payment of these bonuses.

In 1932 (during Hoover's Administration), veterans started marching in Oregon, and by the time they reached Washington DC, they were 20,000 strong. The Senate defeated a bill to pay early. The Army evicted the marchers.

In 1933, 3,000 veterans attended a "Bonus Convention" from May 7-12. Early bonuses were not paid, but FDR offered the marchers jobs in the newly created CCC, and almost 90% accepted. Pictured to the right is the camp where they stayed at Fort Hunt.

In 1934, only about 1500 veterans attended the "convention." Fort Hunt was now a CCC camp. The CCC boys moved out, and the conventioneers stayed there which interrupted CCC work. There was little support for paying early, about half of the attendees joined the CCC; the rest went home."

A caption under the same image on the National Park Service website identifies the tent picture as the bonus camp set up at Fort Hunt for the veterans who marched on Washington in 1933 - the same one mentioned in your timeline. It describes the location as the "parade ground" at Fort Hunt. This, as I understand it, is the open area to the North of Mount Vernon battery that still exists in the park today. Below is a picture, closer up than your shot, showing what this area looked like in 2013.

This story on WTOP has a slide show with 19 old photos of Tysons Corner and nearby:

http://wtop.com/fairfax-county/2017/08/photos-tysons-corner-through-the-years/

The oldest photo is from 1930 and the newest is 1997. Most of the photos go back to before the 80s.

no, and i'd want confirmation the license plate shown is a VA plate - i don't see the plate as familiar but unfamiliar with antique plates

anyone alive in the 70's has heard of Melpar, i don't remember the hangar shaped building at bailey's - though admittedly i didn't see much of the crossroads driving through during what was still more than not the "B&W" photo days

I heard Weber has been around a long time but wow!

I went in there once for (somthing only they had), dirtiest shop ever and likely still is. Many shops are but they were on the high end.

Dirt from tire & rotor work is FULL OF LEAD DUST - illegal to even vacuum in such a room without protective gear / properly rated vacuum.

They need to get (brand of soap) and pressure washer and clean the place out - likely should prevent the result from getting in the water supply too (they SHOULD have a drain rated exactly for that reason).

-------------------------

in history some ignored the dangers of lead known since roman times (ie Caligula a victim), while other heeded it and (removed it from drinking fountains!): some still ignore it.

Thanks Dog Walker1 for the link to the Tyson's Corner pictures.

There is a picture in that collection of the Tysons Meat Locker building with the animals painted on the side of it. Little Blanche didn't understand what that meant when she was a wee one but loved seeing those pictures when the family went around seeing where Dad was working on Sunday afternoons.

I think the building finally got torn down with all the Metro construction in the area.

Does anyone have a colored picture of the Meat Locker -- am I allowed to say colored?

You are a newbie to Fairfax City. This photo is the old Safeway Store that closed down in 1978 when the new Safeway opened at Courthouse Plaza.

After Pfaltzgraff closed down, the building was torn down, and a Harris Teeter opened in 2002.

Harris Teeter closed like most businesses in Fairfax are doing nowadays.

I not only remember that place well, I remember seeing deer, and other animals that people would bring in, hanging outside so they could age for a day or two......

That was back in the day when more people provided for themselves, instead of relying on the local grocery store to do it for you.
