Very late 60s or very early 70s. Thanks for the Grants picture- I thought I was the only one who remembered Grants. I don't see me in the picture-maybe I'm in back somewhere. The flagpole is where the post office used to be IN the shopping center. The mexican hat was El Palacio resteraunt and way down at the end Drug Fair took up a good chunk of that end- basically Drug fair took up what is now the clothing store AND the fitness gym with all of the back room stock fit into what is now the entire Rite Aid.

That pic of the A&P and Drug Fair reminds me of the ones that used to be located on Duke Street. My Dad used to be the weekend manager of that A&P back in the late 50's. We as a family ate pretty well during those days. To this day, I seriously doubt the bread was "Day Old," and not once did I believe the steaks were beyond their pull dates.

Was it next to the 7-11 and the cleaners? Those places backed to the old Toys R Us, which is now some kind of gathering hall

Its on Hillwood Avenue off of Annandale Road in Falls Church. The radio tower is still located there in the back of the shopping center.

Yes, the Gulf Station was next to the 7-11 and the cleaners. There was another gas station across Commerce St. also along Franconia Rd. Also, behind the 7-11, basically where the Waterford is now, was a 2-story office building for the 7-11 corporation. As kids we used to walk to the 7-11 for candy and popsicles.

Across Franconia Rd. just a bit closer to Shirley Highway (now I-95 of course) was the original location of the Colonial Animal Hospital. That later moved behind the HoJos, which is now a Frizzles. It's now located in the Springfield Plaza.

And, last but not least, Bowie Drive, located in Springfield Estates, the housing development behind the Marriot Courtyard, used to connect with Franconia Road.

Great memory original springfielder! I guess you are a little older than I am because I thought the animal hospital was always behind the HoJo's. Did you ever eat at ding how or the little deli? I loved those places.

I just came across this postcard from the Evans Farm inn over in Mclean, I went to quite a few wedding receptions there back in the day.

Oh yeah, Ding How had the best fried wontons! We used to visit there often. Didn't visit the little deli, though.

I also remember the Springfield Pharmacy on the corner of that shopping center, and Fischer's was across the street where Total Wine is now. (A fire forced Fischer's to move across the street where the LA Mart is now.) Years and years ago, Fischer's had a scale model in the front of the store showing the Future of Springfield. It showed future roads, highways and buildings. And damn if most of it didn't come true! (Sure which I had taken more pictures as a kid!)

The animal hospital had a long covered walkway leading out to Franconia Road. Was fun as a kid.

Cool pic of the A&P at Tower Center! I can identify most of the cars in the lot, does that mean I'm old?

Hey, does anybody know why Drug Fair often paired with A&P and People's paired with Giant? There was no corporate connection that I know of.

Obviously I meant I WISH I had taken more pics as a kid. Fumble fingers.

I've wondered if that place was still owned by the same family. I seriously doubt it, but you never know. I'm still around, so maybe they are too! Would be fun to find out. To be honest, I can't even remember the last time I was there, so no idea if it's still decent food.

The plaza with Ding How's also had a pet store across the way with a monkey in a cage right in front, right next to Tots N Teens clothing store. That long covered walkway mentioned also housed the Pink Elephant thrift store.

Currently there are a bunch of townhouse looking things. They kept the old mill though....for some reason.

Wow, I remember the Pet Store and the Tots N' Teens! That was pretty much the first store I remember that catered exclusively to the young and we thought it was cool! I remember we bought a kitten and mice at the Pet Store. Yes, we had pet mice.

Actually, the long covered walkway I was talking about was on Franconia Road, basically where the Hilton is now. It was for the original location of the Colonial Animal Hospital which sat in an old house, I believe. At any rate it was a separate building.

I believe what you're referring to is the corridor within the Concord Shopping center. The Pink Elephant Thrift Store is still at the end. It amazes me that place is still around. It's run by The Women's Club of Springfield. I remember my Mom volunteering to work there.

When we dined at Evans Farm Inn you would order, receive your meal then a lady dressed in traditional early American garb would come to the table with a basket of delicious spoonbread and spoon it onto your plate until you said "when"...great memories!

yes Old Springfielder, you are correct about the walkway - these are some very old memories coming back in my 52 year old brain LOL. I got such a kick out of hearing of the super slide, I remember it well. I thought I was the only one who remembered that. Also Shakey's (correct me if I am wrong), the pizza place with the stuffed giraffe and a wooden post with lollipops stuck in holes all over. We got pitchers of root beer. I am also old enough to remember the Optomist Club doing fireworks over Springfield Plaza, my Dad was a member and always pretended he got a finger blown off while helping. Lord, that would be child abuse now but how we screamed even knowing he was just holding it down. They sold Christmas trees also. One time they let us children paint the windows at the shopping center with Ding Howes's - not sure why. But we sure had fun. I know all of these things have been mentioned but hopefully it will show my credentials LOL and I will try to think of new ones not posted. My 75 year old Mother has pictures that I will try to find for all to enjoy.

Ding How appears to have changed owners, but it is still my favorite Chinese carry out. Been around since 1962 if I remember the sign on the front window. My favorite sit down Chinese was Sampan in Franconia- but not after the original owner sold it and retired. I miss Fischers.

My father banked at THAT Dominion National Bank. One Christmas he was in the drive thru and wanted $600 to give out to relatives as gifts. The drive thru teller told him there was a $300 limit. Dad told the teller not to make him come into the bank and raise hell to get his money. He got the $600 but the dumbass did something and the extra $300 never came out of dad's account...

My folks made me go to Evans Farm Inn after my graduation from TJ (held at Wolf Trap) since my relatives liked the atmosphere. My sister and I liked going to the Joshua Tree down the road. They were very friendly with their sangria and under aged drinkers.

Bazanos was owned by the original owners of Pizza Kazano. They catered the Junior Class Pizza Dinner when I was at Jefferson in 1971. The owner said the biggest mistake they made was when they sold the name along with the business in Bradlick.

The bike is BMX but has that plate in the front, which typically didn't show up until the later 70s. I'll say photo date 1978.

Just barely- I was just a wee guy strapped in the back seat of moms Buick going down Franconia road back then. If I recall Joe Alexander ran the place. Older residents of Bulah tell me they used to get their mail from the store too.

Wish they hadn't put up those stereotypical connected mc-mansions on Evans farm... I remember going there 20 years ago when I was only 5, before it turned into all that crap. been in a few of them for parties a couple years back, they are nice, but nothing that can't be found elsewhere in mclean

Used to take my kids to Evans Farm Inn to feed apples and carrots to the horses out back. Little kids love stuff like that. Big kids too. Didn't love the geese over by the mill pond though. Meanest, most ornery critters God ever created. Ate there a few times too. Food was pretty good, but those chairs left a lot to be desired.

And he had to change the state license plates at the same time! They were both due April 15 as I recall.

White on black in even numbered years, black on white in odd numbered years. You did not want to be anywhere near a DMV on April 14! The lines went down the street at Pitt St and at Glebe Rd (the only DMVs back then).

On the corner of Keene Mill Rd. and Backlick Rd. in Springfield, was originally a Hot Shoppes. After Phineas II, I believe it was a Houlihans. Can't remember if anything else. The Hot Shoppes originally had car hops, which were a thrill for the kids! It was a hang out for the 60's Lee High School crowd.

Teen Twist, Mighty Moe, Orange Freeze or Pappy Parkers Fried Chicken anyone?

Looking at that Shakeys birthday club card brings back some memories and I did attend a few birthday parties there. My parents used to have our birthday parties at Howard Johnsons. We usually went to the hojo on the hill off route 50 but a couple times we had it at fairfax circle. The children's menu doubled as a cool hat!

Hey Original Springfielder, let me ask you this. I grew up in Mclean so I did not spend a whole lot of time in Springfield. I do remember the super slide from when I was very young. Was there really a Hot Shoppes a Lums and a Howard Johnsons all in operation at the same time in downtown springfield?
I also remember a Arthur Treachers just down backlick road a little bit. My dad bought my Mom a 77 VW beetle at the Volkswagen dealer in that same area I think the dealership was more or less across the street.
Sounds like you springfielders had it pretty good in those days with the rocking chair theatre to boot!

Someone else please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think both the Hot Shoppes and Howard Johnsons were in operation at the same time, but I think the Lums came later.

I remember the Arthur Treachers--my introduction to malt vinegar on fish! Currently, that building is the Five Guys burger joint. I'm pretty sure the VW dealership was next door. The dealership is still there (now changed hands to Sheehy) and expanded to where a small shopping center used to stand.

Yeah, as kids we complained constantly that there was nothing to do in Springfield. But looking back, I think we had some pretty cool things to do and to look forward to each year!

The Arthur Treachers was next to LEE Volkswagon, which moved further south on Backlick. You are right, it's now Sheehy VW.

Ron's Speed Shop was North of Arthur Treachers, until the internet killed the local speed shops.

I've been in 22152, 22015, and now 22039, since 1973

I think the springfield LUMS was there in the earlier days. On page 29 of this thread someone posted a pic of the Springfield super slide with the LUMS in the foreground. I was pretty sure that the super slide was gone by the mid 70s so that Lums was there in the 60s or earlier. The Howard Johnson motor lodge changed to the Friendship inn by the mid to late 80s but the HOJO restaurant lasted to about 1990 while the Hot Shoppes had changed to various other establishments in the late 70s.
That's the way I remember it but I could be wrong. I am just getting too damn old.

PS,
wasn't the super slide replaced by the car wash? Would love to see a picture of Logan Ford.

Right by the VW dealership and Arthur Treacher's was the "downtown" Springfield Greyhound bus station and Norm's TV repair, right? I remember my aunt coming to visit us in our new house in West Springfield (22152) and meeting her there as her bus arrived, maybe 1974?

Still remember our phone number with a 569 exchange. Anyone remember the other Springfield specific phone numbers. 451-?

323, 978, and 425 were Braddock Central Office exchanges, not SPringfield.

Springfield CO exchanges were 455, 451, 440, 569, etc.

The bus station was in the small shopping center that was originally next to the VW dealership. It was torn down for the dealership expansion.

Quick Marty! get in the DeLorean- were going back to the future of OPEN SHOPPING CENTERS! Gee Doc, didn't we do that before?

WTOP says there is finally movement to redevelop landmark shopping center in an open air concept.

Gee, like we haven't had that before. Been there done that.

I used to specifically get yelled at by my mother for running up over and down those concrete barriers at Landmark. I wasn't much bigger than the barriers at that time.

Every generation thinks they invent something new. Open malls, then closed malls, then open malls again.

I wonder if the new open concept Landmark will have those concrete barriers. I don't think the physics of size will work in my favor anymore when I run over them.

May have been mentioned somewhere upthread in the past 29 pages, but I grew up in phone exchange JEfferson. Should be an easy guess for any longtime resident.
