I remember as a kid going on a field trip out to Dulles. They (and we) thought those transporter things were way cool. They were like the latest and greatest which was going to revolutionize plane boarding. Wasn't until I was an adult having to actually use the damn things that I (and everyone else) realized what a pain in the ass they were. lol Took friggin forever to go through the first gates and wait, board the transport, ride out and unload at the mid-field terminal, go through the gates there, and then finally board the plane.

Also remember back not that long ago when Dulles was a ghost town. You could go out there mid-week, pull right up in front, no cops there making you leave, and you could look up and down the terminal both ways and you might see 20 other people.

It was that way right up until after deregulation, about 82 or 83 when it started to pick up. My brother was taking flying lessons and they held the Air France Concorde short of the runway so he could do his touch-and-go in his Cessna. Can't do T&Gs at Dulles anymore.

Floris is the name of the area near Frying Pan Park/Herndon. There were many dairies located there and the milk was taken into Washington on the W&OD railroad. Two of my grandfather's brothers had dairy farms in the area that were taken by eminent domain for the airport. The cows had to be milked twice a day back then -- by hand -- Yikes what a life.

"from the main terminal direct to the airplanes "
Yep. Remember that a "jumbo" jet was a 707... you boarded the particular coach (depending on seating) which then let you into the front or rear doors of the aircraft.
Remember too that the "jetway" was a rarity - one typically boarded by walking out to the mobile stairways...

it's still the same signpost from back when the movie theater was open, isnt it?

Not sure about Turnpike Cinema, But Rolling Valley and Fair City Mall where almost Identical since they where owned by the Haft's, The Movie theater is still there in the corner, Giant Closed, and the ABC is gone from the first block of stores, I always assumed they where all called Fair City. I hated to see Ranger Surplus go out. I still go that way to Brandell's over by the post office, and we do F.P.Y.C. sports which are all over in that area. The Movie theater in Rolling valley closed a long time ago.

#4. The April Fools’ Day Tornado of April 1, 1973. A thunderstorm moving northeast near Manassas, Virginia spawned a tornado in Prince William County during the mid-afternoon of April 1. The twister skipped over a twenty-mile path to just north of Falls Church, Virginia. The first serious damage was noted south of Braddock Road at the Middle Ridge development, where a dozen homes were seriously damaged. The tornado then bounced back aloft before slamming into homes about a mile to the north, near the intersection of Braddock and Ox Roads. At least one house was lifted off its foundation and blown across Braddock Road.

The twister then hopped aloft again, next coming down about two miles to the northeast, near Little River Turnpike, where it did serious damage to the Pickett Shopping Center and Woodson High School. The tornado then made a final hop of three miles to the northeast before coming down in the Merrifield section at Lee Highway, near the Beltway. At that time, it sliced through the Pine Springs garden apartment complex and several other residences and businesses.

In all, 226 homes were damaged, 53 homes were declared uninhabitable, and 13 homes were totally destroyed. Also, 94 garden apartment units were damaged and 50 businesses sustained losses. Two elementary schools, Mantua and Oakview, were damaged. Woodson High School had its roof ripped off and several walls blown down. It was closed for the rest of the school year. Dozens of kids were in the Woodson gym playing basketball when the roof blew off. Luckily, there were no serious injuries.

In all, 37 injuries were reported as a result of the tornado. Fortunately, there were no fatalities. The total damage was estimated at $13.5 million.

Tornado damage to row houses on Benning Road between 17th and 18th Streets, November 17, 1927. The tornado passed through western Alexandria and southeast Arlington, then through a densely populated area of Washington near 18th Street, NE. The path of the tornado was 17 miles long and ranged in width from 20 yards to 300 yards. Source: Washington Weather

Bought my first 'new' electric guitar from Giant Sound at Pickett in the early 1980's that was located in part of where Sears is in the photo. There was also a family kosher restaurant called KnishKnosh (early 80s) located further
to the left near the corner and was operated by a married couple- Mr. & Mrs. Silverman. They offered some amazing chicken soup.

Because it was a federal building (and is today) Wolf Trap did not have to follow local building regulations specifically having fire sprinklers. Of not a good idea in a mostly exposed wood structure.

From Local Kicks http://www.localkicks.com/article.jsp?ID=339

"The Marquis de Lafayette (1757-1834) stayed here during his month-long visit to Alexandria in 1824. Lafayette was commissioned a major general by Congress on July 31, 1777, and he met General Washington the next day. Not yet twenty, he was virtually adopted by Washington, fought with distinction in a number of battles throughout the Revolutionary War, and was with Washington at Yorktown for the defeat of Cornwallis. It is estimated that Lafayette, an unpaid volunteer, spent more than $200,000 of his private funds in assisting the colonies. Lafayette’s son, George Washington Montier de Lafayette (1779-1849), lived at Mount Vernon for five years as a member of the Washington family while his father was in prison during the French Revolution. President Monroe invited Lafayette back to the United States in 1824, and for more than a year his triumphal tour of the country provoked enthusiastic demonstrations without precedent in American history. Lafayette’s toast during his last visit to Alexandria is still appropriate: “The City of Alexandria -- May her prosperity and happiness more and more realize the fondest wishes of our venerated Washington.”

Rory, I agree with you. Let's keep this thread alive. I love seeing pics of what this area used to be like. FWIW, I remember when Hooes Rd. (pre-FX PKWY) had a one lane bridge just before Gambrill Rd. And farther East, down Hooes, there was the rickety railroad-tie bridge just past the insane hairpin turn. I can remember riding the school bus during snowy days and our bus driver would barely make the turns. Our bus would get dead quiet as we made our way down the turn and when we made it to the bridge we would all cheer for our bus driver. I think her name was Rose. She wore leather, fingerless gloves and took NO shit from us kids.

On that same stretch of Hooes Rd there was old ramshackle house that kept adding on with crappy plywood expansions, that house looked like a single family treehouse. I need to take a drive back there and see if it even exists anymore. Gotta love old Fairfax County!

The Charter House was a very nice hotel in its day. It sat basically on the corner of Bren Mar Drive and had a decent restaurant. Behind it along Bren Mar Dr. were a bunch of apartment buildings. Next to the Charter House, going North along I-95, was a large parking lot where the Denny's and the Pizza Hut were located, then the Zayre's. I think the Zayre's sat behind a gas station which was on Edsall Rd.

Wow, I'd forgotten about the Zayre's!

Hooes used to be a great road for dumbass too fast teenage driving back then. That was one of our regular routes back then when a main activity was "just riding around" and gas cost nothing. Those turns claimed many piece of shit Chevelles and Novas in its day. lol

Orignially, there was Dart Drug on the left of the center, and a big Zayre's. Half of the Zayre's became the TJ Maxx (I worked at the Zayre's then), and when Zayre's closed, Tower Records moved in. Then Tower became smaller over time until it too disappeared.

The one thing that sticks in my memory from Transpo 72 for some reason is seeing the X-15 there. And riding on the demonstration train.

Yes, the crash was during the Transpo. I can't believe its been 41 years!

Thanks GettinOld for the picture of Annandale circa 60s. My Dad and I were talking about Annandale Hardware -- the Star Supply Store -- the other day.

The answer is 38. First graduating class at Lake Braddock was 1976!

Counting the Class of '76 and the current class of '13 the structure has been painted at least 38 times!

There have been dozens of un-authorized paintings of that tower over the years. The county has several cameras with night vision capability keeping watch on it as it has been subject to vandals who have sought to make a variety of statements over the years.

Isn't that Good Humor truck near what is now Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington? I seem to recall seeing the pic posted elsewhere attributed to that location where I grew up '67-'87 in the Waycroft- Woodlawn neighborhood.

That pic of the Korea Palace and the Texaco Gas Station at the corner of Pershing Drive and Washington Blvd, brings back memories. When We first moved to Virginia, we lived in Lee Gardens Apartments not one half mile down towards rt 50. The Texaco was a Sinclair Gas Station back in the late sixties. then it became a BP.

Definitely never looked that blue. It's been enhanced either using filters and developing at the time ad/or boosted later when transferred to digital.

The funny thing was, you could dial the exchange (936 for weather, 555 for time) and then any four numbers and it would go through.

for the kids:

what they are talking about is before the interwebz and cellies, we cave people honestly, seriously had PHONE NUMBERS to call to get the time and get the weather.

NO JOKING! If you wanted to verify what time it was, you'd call and get a recording of some woman's voice that would repeat every ten seconds what time it was. (example "At the tone, the time will be 8: 42 and 40 seconds............beep!").

Same with weather - i'm sure you get the idea lol

just thought I'd put this out there cause some of the kids over here were asking about the numbers

anyways, found out something new this morning. Let's see if anyone remembers THIS (hint: the one on the left is still there. The one on the right got replaced in the mid-late 80s I think. And.................well I guess I know NOW why the one in the middle always looked different LoLz

844-2525, not 1212. You're right about the 844, I screwed up on the 555, but it was 2525, to differentiate from the 1212

@gettin - not to nitpic, but around here, it was 1212 for both time and temp. Only the first 3 numbers changed between them. Or at least thats how it was in the last decade or so they did it LoLz. Not that it really mattered cause as someone else already pointed out, the last 4 numbers you could change and you'd still get the recordings. But yeah, both of them were advertised as being xxx-1212. http://ancientgardenerblog.blogspot.com/2011/03/remember-phone-number-for-weather.html
