If you're interested in Springfield history, you might want to check out this thread: http://www.fairfaxunderground.com/forum/read/2/1100089/1134100.html#msg-1134100

Not a lot of pictures, but some nice history.

The Springfield Towers butts up against a gas station, not above it. The closed gas station still stands.

You're right, the restaurant next door was a Howard Johnson's, with the motel next door across Commerce Street. The original Commerce Street overpass wasn't built until around 1969. Interestingly, the motel was converted to a Howard Johnson's in 1958 after starting out as a Skylark Motel. I never knew that, just found that at http://www.highwayhost.org/Virginia/Springfield/springfield1.html. However, the photo posted at the website showing the pool doesn't look right. The homes supposedly across I-95 sure never looked like those in the photo.

I used to work at the HoJo's restaurant as a kid. After watching the cooks in action on Saturday mornings, the only things I ate there were items I watched being cooked!

Does anyone have old pics of Four Mile Run, what used to be Luna Park? That place has always fascinated me. There was a lawyer in Clarendon that used to display old Arlington pics on his office windows (Clarendon Blvd, around the corner from Hard Times Cafe). His office is gone now, it's been redeveloped, his name was David something. Weird dude, dated the yoga chick next door. Anyways, he had great pics of old Arlington on his windows.

I know for a fact that ding how was in business in 1977 (may be much older than that) and they are still in business today. Same family ownership from what I am told. Same location on bland street.

Wonderful picture of the Springfield Interchange! It shows the original intersection of Old Keene Mill Rd and Backlick Rd. And I see the grove of trees next to the Springfield Estates housing development. There was a house in the middle of those trees that we eventually determined was haunted.

I don't think the interchange was all that complicated back then. But now? YES!

As for businesses standing the test of time, great question!

My guesses:
--The VW dealership. It expanded after a shopping center was torn down, but it's been in that basic spot.
--Not sure if this counts: The Scion dealership across the street from VW was originally Toyota, but since Scion is owned by Toyota, maybe?
--The 7-11 across from Mike's American grill.
--The Burger King down near Hechinger Dr.

The Gibson cottages were located on the corner of Annandale road and 29--211.
If it was located at the intersection of 50 and 211 it was located at Kamp Washington. There must have been 2 of them. I have never know Kamp Washington to be called Falls Church.

have been trying to find a pic of the Carousel Theater - kids, where the shopping center is across the street from PVI in Fairfax, that used to be a Outlet Mall, a little mini Potomac Mills - hard to believe, eh?
Anyways, there was a movie theater in there called..........well guess. And it actually had a real Carousel in it LoLz

cant seem to find any pics of it or the old mall - they renovated it into the Rodeo Drive it is now sometime in the mid to late 80's I think..................

Does anybody remember or have any pics of the old Mister Doughnut? that's now the Hyundai place?

anywho, found this one....................Good Morning :)

edit: hey kids - wanna know something really funny? back in the day, we wouldnt just say "lee highway" OH NO! We seriously would say take the time to say "twenty-nine-two-eleven" everyone even the traffic reporters ...............I guess just cause we didnt have enough things to do in the day back then LoLz

KB's Carousel 1 & 2 were on the same concrete pad that now supports Super H Mart. IIRC they started in the mid 70's and ran for about 5 years max - the "Carousel" franchise was going to be the "next big thing" - presaging ChuckECheese, I guess.
Mr. Donut was further west in the triangle - where the little plaza is now - the Hyundai store is the former GMC dealership - that building dates back to around 1960 (again IIRC)...
FWIW, that corner was connected to FFaX city's water supply, not the county, so in the aftermath of Isabel (03) they were the only "fast food/coffee" joint open w/of the city...

Law seating was the same before and after the Rebuild. I think the basic structure design remains as it is today. We saw Fireworks there before the fire, and the Children's Fair with Sesame Streets Mr Bob.

Another place we frequented was Tucahoe Park, but I think its in arlington. We had pics of the Climbing Structures, I recall them being Concrete Storm Drain Pipes and Mountains of Rock cemented together.

Used to have an office in the 4 cylinder building where the Baseball field is (behind Cap One). Of course, the "new" pic is already out of date as metro now runs along the north side of the road...

FYI,
CH Ruth was a big publisher of such cards. Google "CH Ruth publishers DC" or similar and you'll see quite a selection of early/mid 20th Century postcards from the greater DC area...

Remember when the State Troopers had the big Furys? Every one of their unmarked cars was the same baby blue color you could see for miles away when they were running speed traps on I-95.

And then there were the poor VolvoCops of Falls Church in the 80s.

Yep, they kept a Chevy station wagon for K-9 because they thought the Volvos were too small for the dog.

Don't have the glossy photo Captain Dan gave me of the WWDC helicopter, so this screen cap was the best I could find. He visited just about every school in the area back then. Complete with Safeway sponsorship on the side.

I remember watching Dunn-Loring Company 13 putting out the fire in the Pagans' garage when an acetylene tank blew. Was a bit newer equipment than this.

@GettinOld...I remember the story about some guys who broke into Giant Music in Falls Church and stole a bunch of guitars....they were driving a 66 Impala wagon and outran the Volvos, although his stupid buddy was already throwing the guitars out the window...they still could not catch them.

Ahhh, Remember the good old Drug Fair?
