Gordon Blvd--- On the same side as the Texaco was a Krispy Kreme. It eventually became a Black Eye Pea. Not sure what is is now. Spent many early mornings traveling that stretch of Rte 7 on my way to Wakefield HS for swim practice. The lights at most of the intersections would be on flash, except that one. And many mornings a FFx patrol car would be sitting at the Roys. In my youth thinking it was waiting to catch a red light runner, but probably eating donuts.

Not sure about the RR cut either.

Ravensworth and Annandale were realigned to connect at some point.

Thanks for the map, it seems to match up with the photo from a few pages before. My dad said there used to be a water company (small) for the area at the "point" where Columbia Pike enters into 236. It was run by the McWhorthers of McWhorther Place. The family owned alot of the land in the area. I think they still might own the shopping center where Silverados (Fritzbees) is located.

There was also a gas station across the street which was later a Penguin Feather, Bargain Buggy car rental, and a psychic.

I'm with Huntington on this one. The shape of the building gives it away as a former Red Barn turned into a Hardee's. I'm guessing this one on Randolph in Arlington, which indeed was on the back side of what is now Ballston Mall:

The railroad cut was part of the bed for the old Manassas Gap Railroad line, which was graded before the Civil War but never completed.

The portion of the railroad bed depicted in the 1949 map has been paved over, but other parts of it still exist, both in the Annandale area and elsewhere. More about it in this thread:

We went on one of those "nature walks" at Hidden Oaks Nature Center -- off Hummer Road. One of the spots that was talked about was a ridge that was for the Manassas Gap RR. Where this is located on the map is just about right for where it could cut into the place in the park.

If you drive down Prosperity Ave or Woodburn Road you can still see the remains of a part of it. There's a park where Prosperity bottoms out in all that flood plain and a bike trail that will lead you over toward Woodbur (I have no idea where it goes from there). It crosses Woodburn at the creek there that used to wash the bridge out all the time before they replaced the bridge.

see? you learn new stuff everyday! Thanks to all y'all who schooled me/us on that r.r. mystery. Apparently Medford Dr behind the Safeway is the old right of way and if you zoom in on the area from googlemaps in the map view, you can see the right of way still exists off of Medford to this day all the way to the Beltway behind the Nature Center and another neighborhood park back there called................you guessed it "Manassas Gap Park" - pretty cool....................

about the Ballston Hardees pic - I only every knew the place as Roys - but yeah, it's the sam building as that Red Barn - next to Metro's busbarn on Randolph - replaced by a highrise a few years back......................

Come to think of it, there were a hell of a lot of gas stations in Fairfax City back in the day. Quite a few of them have been closed. I think of 7 just off the top of my head. Some have been repurposed while others have been razed.

I moved to Annanale as a kid in 1960. I can't swear to it, but I believe the 3 Chefs/Fuddrucker's building and the Esso station co-existed for a time. One thing I know for sure is that the Esso station used to host live local rock bands in the mid 60's. Seems like we ate at the Chefs and walked over to listen to the band several times.

My recollection of the gas station across from the Esso is that it was a Phillips 66. Steinhorst Plumbing is in that building now.

Anybody remember Kerlin's Korner? It was at the corner of Ravensworth and 236. He ran a plant nursery outside and a convenience store inside. Still remember his coolers full of ice and soda bottles. Rode my bike up there many a hot day for a strawberry NeHi! Ribster's was there next, but I'm not sure if was the same building (I think so). Now its' a fucking Korean joint.

That looks like the hummer road / 236 7-11 to me. I like the ad for the TV tube tester. I remember when the TV would bread my dad would take all the tubes out of our TV and plug them in the machine one at a time until he found the bad one. Peoples drug and radio shack had then too.

This is from Arlington just over the county line.

Harassment at Arlington, Virginia Sit-In: 1960

Adolescents influenced by the American Nazi Party harass Dion Diamond during a civil rights sit-in at the Cherrydale Drug Fair in Arlington, VA June 10, 1960.

Some threw lit cigarettes at the sit-in demonstrators while others kicked them. Verbal harassment was constant.

Diamond was part of a small integrated group called the Non-Violent Action Group (NAG) that led a two week campaign that resulted in integration of restaurants in Arlington, including this Drug Fair. Restaurants in Alexandria and Fairfax, Virginia soon followed.

NAG then began desegration activities in Maryland that resulted in the fall of Jim Crow at Glen Echo Amusement Park, theaters, bowling alleys and restaurants in the Washington suburbs.

The big kids attended Poe and the little kids Annandale Elementary - right next to the Honey Pig.

Americana Theater in the strip mall on Heritage across from Annandale High School?

Next to what was Peoples Drug, now CVS. There's a bank there now and they built multi-story offices on top.

The Murphy was were the Blockbuster is (was?) and the Korean Dept. Store. Safeway opened Little River Shopping Center and was enlarged ten or so years back. The Safeway moved from the corner of Backlick (Maple?) and Columbia Pike, currently the Bank of America across from the Annandale canon.

Thanks for the A&P -- Mom always shopped at the Giant and before that the Acme market that was the Room Store and now is a Goodwill.

The Americana Theatre it had the most uncomfortable seats. Last movie I saw there was "All the President's Men, another Robert Redford picture.

Apparently it was there until 1987.

I was around then and must have known about it but I sure don't remember it at all.

OK, here's a harder one in Annandale. You may recognize the house in the foreground since it's still there.

I don't know what bank it became after Safeway left the building (where the BoA and Honey Pig and various other Korean restaurants are now) but this was late 60s/early 70s. I wasn't doing too much banking in those days.

Its the BoA that is catty-cornered from the old Fuddrukkers, Columbia Pike and Maple/Backlick, not the one in the Little River Shopping Center's parking lot

My parents used to use National Bank of Fairfax, then name is long gone, these are the only pics I could dig up, Crestar was a Newer Addition. I remember really young there being Metal Trips for the lights at the intersections before the use of the wires currently used. A hay truck Tractor Trailer overturned on Burke Lake Road turning onto Rolling Road coming from Braddock headed to West Springfield.

Is this the little house that is next to the Green Spring Road in Green Spring Park, that used to be a cut through between LRT and Braddock Road and was closed by the Park Authority/VDOT in the mid-90s? The park authority used to let an employee use/rent the house.

When the property was first "given" to FCPA there were some old out buildings that we would go and "party" in. Late 70s.

Not quite. 1st Virginia did not morph into Sovran. Sovran resulted from a merger of Virginia National Bank and First and Merchants. Sovran became C&S/Sovran through a merger with Citizens and Southern which was, I believe, based in Atlanta. C&S/Sovran merged NCNB, based in Charlotte to form NationsBank, which then changed its name to B of A.

Yes. Always thought that it was an odd little house and location. Assumed that it must have served some particular purpose. Guess that it was located there to have water access from the spring/stream.

"Not all of Fountain Beattie’s orchard produce, however, went to the market in this way. The spring house on the farm contained presses, storage facilities, and other equipment needed to make apple cider, applejack, and apple and peach brandy. Apples picked in the ripening season were stored in large barrels until the fall and winter months, at which time they were made into fermented or distilled beverages. According to his descendants, Beattie operated a licensed distillery and made brandies at the farm."

about the safeway/BoA - we are all talking about the same place - right down the street from the firehouse and kinda across the Pike from the cannon and the jiffy lube - can't mistake that big ass sign sticking out the top of it - you can see it on the map facebook thief put up (you ROCK, you do know that, right?)

if you look REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEALLY close in the top middle of that pic, you can see Southern Towers (I-396@Seminary) off in the distance

That First Virginia branch was originally a Mount Vernon Trust Co. branch. It is they that built that stately building. I had my first savings account there and still have the "passbook", in which the teller wrote your deposits/withdrawls.

To the folks mentioning the Americana theatre in Heritage Mall, it's full name was the Roth's Americana Theatre. Roth's was a chain and they put Roth's in the name of all their theatres. That People's Drug next door had an old timey lunch counter and was a major hangout for Annandale HS students.

The old A&P store on the Pike had a Drug Fair next to it. Drug Fair became Rite-Aid.

Anyone remember when the Woodburn Rd bridge was a single lane? I think it was widened in the late 80s.

Also, what was name of the drug store chain that was taken over by CVS? I think I remember a Dart Drug, but I though there was another one as well.

Love that National Airport pic.

Notice, in a lot full 60's iron, one guy is still driving a '50 (or '51,'52, or '53) Ford. A man after my own heart---run 'em 'til fucking wheels fall off!

National was so nice back then. Even up to just before 9/11.

I could leave the house about 1/2 hour before my flight and be parked and on the plane with time to spare.

Check out the Star Supply truck in the foreground. Must have been a parade going on.

I loved Star Supply. That's how it was before the Home Depot juggernaut. They'd sell a kid a quarter's worth of nails in a brown paper bag for a tree fort. Give a kid lumber scraps. And they knew a hammer from a screwdriver if you asked.

Its interesting the map I put up shows New R.R. Grade and is right there when you compare the maps, Gallows, Annandale and Little River. Not sure When the water company thing came in, first I have heard about it, but if its Civil War Era then possibly set up for the Trains? this would lead me to suspect the rail line was proposed at one time or Existed.
