The cars in the photo's are killing me..lol...My brother bought a big box tv "a bubble tv covered with wood to look like furniture" back in the day from Luskins. I remember helping him lug that heavy tv around. Not that long ago that was the shit to have one of those.

I forgot how many places went under. Great photo's!

I might be way off here but there is a VDOT building at the corner of Commerce and Franconia. Across Commerce from where Toys R Us and the 7-11 used to be. Was that a Luskin's? Or is that a newer building? I remember the name Luskin's, my Dad bought my Mom her first "kitchen" tv there, just can't recall locations. Love this thread!

Mike's Italian, as far as I know, was pretty old. As a matter of fact, it used to be the restaurant to a tourist court...if you were looking at the restaurant from Rt 1, there were cabins, maybe 7 or 8 of them, that went off to the right. I've seen them in an old postcard.

The restaurant recently closed...I know people that talk about it from the 60's, and the tourist court was there in the 50's.

The building is now a car rental place, I think.

This is still in operation and has the oldest Liquor Lisc in Fairfax County. One of the places to dance in the 90's Between Blackies / Deja Vu, Red Moon, Boots, Nicks and Skinifatz.

The other Dinner theater was Hayloft in Manassas on Ballsford Rd

@Burke - It was a Holiday Inn when that place was jumping - but no, I dont remember the name :( There was an good surf/turf place right nextdooor to it too that helped with the business back in there, but it caught fire two decades ago and that was the start of the downfall of that chunk of town............
@heavy - your crazy LoLz - or prolly just getting old too, yo :)
@Huntington - what you are talking about is the EXACT same building in the pic. All the buildings on that part of Commerce that are NOT hotels are buildings that have been there forever. The ballroom was an old Toys are Us. The big foreign school used to be a Computer Learning Center-type place. Heck, even that hair place used to be a bank a long time ago. God, I am getting old. LoLz

Burke Brat, Where was the Kon Tiki?

As for the grocery store, Burke Brat, you are right as it was a Grand Union, And Gorden, yes in Falls Church at Westlawn Shopping Center in Jefferson Village. The Touch of class Hair Place was originally Queen B Coiffures where my Mom would get her hair done EVERY Friday from 1967-1980. The only day I could skip some classes as she would not be home to answer the phone...pre Caller ID/Machines...LOL They also had a S&H Green Stamp Redemtion Store where I could pick up misc bike/sports stuff w/ all the damn stamps my folks had lying around.

I thought it was Peppermint Lounge, but maybe I am mistaken, I took a date out who live just up the street from there on that access road, I want to say 87ish? recently as in a few years ago we would got to TAJ which was the bar but it closed down, not sure if the hotel reopened it.

Here are my pics of the train going through Burke, in the fall it would go out to Front Royal, the field is the one we would walk through to get to the 7-11 in Burke, I think this was Prior to the Giant being built.

The last pic was when we would collect Newspapers in the community prior to Recycling being done county wide, we would go to Tysons to a drop center and get money for a Teen club, I am guessing 1982?

I believe the picture of Tower Records flanked by Evans and Hechts is from Landmark Plaza -- the one west of Shirley Highway, not Landmark Center (later Landmark Mall) to the east. That Hecht's was their clearance center where they discounted stuff that didn't sell in their regular stores. Mostly junk, but if you had enough patience you could sometimes find an OK bargain.

If you want to step back in time then visit the lazy susan. Everything about it is circa '60s....the decor, buffet, furniture, building, .... Expensive for a play and all (iirc ~$60 per person) but kitchy fun.

I was looking at a restored FCPD cruiser from the 40's. I mentioned out loud that it lacked the partition between the front and back seats like they have now.

Old timer near me said, "In the old days, the perps weren't conscious by the time they got in the car".

@Sleepy, Magnifico was around when I was there, It was across from the shopping center that had Joe Theisman's Restaurant and then later the Family Fish House. The best pizza was from Athens Pizza in 7 Corners. They moved to Baileys X Roads near where the Roy Rogers used to be.

Skinifatz is still open, same age as Lazy Susan and they have displays like a little museum, you can get food, Drink and Play a game of pool, they also have a DJ, just not a really busy place so if your looking to pick anyone up its hit or miss your better off at Brittanies or another Bar. When we would go there a majority of the time it was Office Parties or groups meeting there, they operate the large Fireplace during the winter after the leaves have all come down. Lazy Susan provides the Food portion of the sales for the ABC lisc. http://www.skinifatz.com/

I think it was part of the Steak and Ale chain originally, but they couldn't call it that in Virginia because it had "Ale" in the title. Might have been the "Jolly Tiger". It had several other incarnations after that.

The bar in the Best western Fairfax was the Peppermint lounge when it was a holiday Inn. The DJ that was there is my youngest Sons Godfatrher. It later became Alexanders but it didn't last long. The Monkees stayed there when they played wolftrap in 1986. Fun Place. Boomerangs was in the Fudruckers and the Fox and Hound was where the Moose Lodge is now.

I bet not one update has been to that Mooselodge building. By the looks of the outside I had always assumed it was an old world european restaurant. That service road must have been part of the original 123 before I-66 was built

I think that's right. I think the "tiger" part was from the euphemistic name given to the Sambos restraunt around the corner on Fx blvd. that is now a Denny's.

Anyone remember back in the 70s when the building across the street from the Clifton store (now the Heart in Hand Restaurant) was a bar featuring a bluegrass band? Every night they'd cap their show with a rendition of "Orange Blossom Special," timed so they could throw open the doors behind the band to reveal a freight train whizzing by on the track as the song concluded. Unfortunately, the locals weren't big bluegrass fans. The article below is from the Fredericksburg newspaper, Dec. 13, 1976, reporting events that led to the bar's demise:

I think some of those buildings are still there. Isn't that brick building with the cars in front of it where the Equipment Rental place used to be (or perhaps still is)? It also looks like a couple of the roads were re-alligned.

Used to be that Hidden Oaks Nature Center has two or three arial shots of Annandale that showed how the area had developed.

I saw the original "Love Bug" movie at the State, circa 1969? The balcony was very deluxe for a little kid.

The picture of Annandale reminds me, my father told me tht coming in on 236 (early 50s) there was a sign that said "Annandale, a City with a Future." Something tells me its future is now behind it.

@Annandale - nah, it's just getting started LoLz
@copper - you should've paid more attention, case closed
@Sleepy - THREE CHEFS!!! - ok so that used to be a gas station?
@Bill N. That texaco gas station on the south side of the turnpike is still stands
@good old - what REALLY amamzing to me is how I forgot what a pain in the rear the old Nutley interchange used to be. Kids, you dont know this, but until Metro came out, you could ONLY enter and exit Nutley Street towards DC. Couldnt take 66 from there to Fair Oaks you HAD to go thru the city - nuts, eh?

so ok, I was going off about "Buckingham" yesterday? Whelp, turns out that Post Office wasnt always a post office - I get now why that theater ad mentioned the place LoLz.....................

Long before it was Luskins it was DALMO. That Luskins sign was carefully placed over top of the DALMO lettering. Dalmo had some huge lawsuit against the tysons corner people back in the day.

The restaurant is the JV restaurant -- long time dive bar at 50 and Annandale. The theatre was reconfigured and was where the Chili's and now the GoodWill is. Saw Mary Poppins there as a first run.

I drove a truck for Dalmo in '71 & '72. The main store/warehouse was at Duke & Pickett Sts in Alexandria. Other stores were F St NW, Wisconsin Ave, Marlow Heights and Hyattsville Md. May have been a few more that I don't remember.

Worked 6 days a week, five of them delivering appliances and one day of "transfers" (taking small mercahndise to the stores).

One day, we were bouncing through DC on those metal plates that covered the subway tunnel construction and I look in the mirror and people are running out into the street. I didn't close the roll-up door in the back right and electric razors, toasters, radios, and other stuff was falling out onto the street.

I couldn't believe they didn't fire my ass over that!

Yes, the JV lives on...the Jefferson theater became Chili's...the first unit for the Chesapeake Bay Seafood Co. as they were branching out...and closing CB's...sad. The Black Orchid finally closed up shop, but the black leather booths and telephones in each booth were a great MADMEN throw back...plus the Chateaubriand was killer. Hey, Anyone does anyone remember the Chesapeake Bay ripoff in Barcroft Plaza?...It was GREAT.

Who remembers the Washington shopping plate? It was good only at a handful of stores like Hechts, Woodies and the Pants Corral lol!

My mom would give me the plate and drop my friends and I off at Landmark to buy clothes this was mid 70's.

Later the Washington shopping plate turned into central charge and then the discover card.

Its the Roys that is now a McDonalds, corner of Leesburg Pike and Carlin Spring near Skyline. The Texaco, now Shell, can be seen in the picture.

Does anyone have a picture of the Annandale Theatre? My mom took me to see Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid there in the afternoon during its first run. I guess my dad didn't want to see her drool over Paul Newman. Good times! I was a Robert Redford woman (actually girl then) myself...when he looked hot.

My Mom had the Washington Shopping Plate as well. I think Central Charge was around first, however. Remember those stickers on the store windows with the big CC on them? People who've grown up since the 80s have no clue just how unusual credit cards used to be, nor the hoops you sometimes had to go through to use them. I can remember sometimes seeing S&H Green stamps signs on a store With the Central Charge stickers. That was two different eras overlapping.

@hutington - correct - it's AMAZING how Arlington skipped Suburb and went straight from farmland to High Rise city, right? If you havent been up Randolph St in the last few year, yr gonna lose yr mind LoLz
@love me- never knew it was a Krispy Kreme - I only know it as Roys. Way I heard it, it was like the first fast food car hop in the area and that those metal thinges were were the ppl on roller skates would come up and serve you. But all that was long before my time

Anywho, here's across the street.

side rant: I REALLY HATE THAT SHELL OIL COMPANY DID AWAY WITH THE TEXACO BRANDING! Another example of the Dutch RUINING our local culture (we used to have a pretty AWESOME local grocery store chain in Giant) cause it always seems that the ppl who ran Texacos gave extra effort into their stations and design. This one and the one off of 50 near 7 Corners come to mind.

I just tried to find a picture of pants corral but could not locate one. I haven't thought about that place in
years! As I remember it was owned by giant food. There was one in fair city mall I think. They had saloon doors on the changing rooms. Half the kids in Robinson wore levies Jean jackets.

Great pics folks, Keep it up...

@Gorden, Nice shot of the Roy's...It was the first one in the company as Marriott converted a Hot Shoppes Jr in 1968...hence the car hop area in the rear.

@love me, The Krispy Kreme was next door as they were both around at the same time.

@juju, It may have been a Weston's offshoot, but in the mid to late 70's it was a...BOUNTY BAY Seafood House...a small local chain riff on Chesapeake Bay...exactly the same menu and concept. My friends from HS and I would drink copious amounts of beer by the pitcher and eat our weight in hushpuppies..w/ whipped butter.
