I'm sorry, I was going by too old to care who said Annandale Rd. The card doesn't say anything about Annandale Rd.

I know exactly where that is (the photo of Belvoir Grill)...would like to know when that got ripped down?

Also, when dod the "house" to the left get ripped down?

I think that is a little strip center now.

And also, does anyone know when the Groveton Elementary School (near Beacon Mall get ripped down?

Thanks.

I want to say it was part of a contest where someone actually won the house and they dissasmbbled it and rebuilt it elsewhere for the winner........but I may be confusing it with another house building dealie. But yes, you are not crazy - this DID happen near the plaza that doesnt have the fountains. And it was a full two story home about a decent 2-3k sq footer.

speaking of fair oaks, anybody remember the octagon library that used to be in the place - looked just like the one in Burke Centre that the Robinson Nazis burned down............

GB is correct - there were several builders on display @ FOM - the one I recall was for Penderbrook (across the street) Pulte homes. The guys who rebuilt my fence last year were subcontractors on that part of Penderbrook, and had a couple of polaroids of the project & the "display" house in the mall...

no, that the old movie theater - I saw Roger Rabbit there LoLz

the old library was actually inside the mall - in the court where the Macys (the side Macys, not the "end" Macys) is

was a mini library shaped like an octagon and another identical one used to sit in Burke Centre where the Taco Bell is now

Ok, just got it - Extended Stay is back offa Legato Rd - no I dont know what was back there.

I DO remember Pender Vet being run out of that old chruch on the corner of West of and Legato though.................

"The old movie theater is now the "waterford" banquet hall"
Yep. Had a birthday party for the youngest there (the Lion King, IIRC) The FC Library was in the "court" that's now the Macy's (yes, the side one) entrance...

Extended Stay was built in the theater's parking lot @ the ramp from FOM to 50E.
Interestingly, original plans had a "cloverleaf" for the mall entrance off 50W, allowing traffic to flow onto 50 in either direction from the mall, but those plans were scrapped as there wasn't going to be enough traffic from west of the 50/66 interchange...
heh.

It's funny how the old property lines still show up today - the bizarre "hook" that used to connect what is now W Ox, 50, and Legato is still there, but as W Ox is now the main line it's no longer a problem...

Thanks for the picture. We loved Story Book Land going out in the country for a nice ride on Route 1 to this roadside attraction. It really makes you ill to see what it looks like now on Route 1.

The City Paper did a story on SBL ten years or so back.

@blanche - yeah I remember it. It's wild how things change. The old drive in movie place across the street and up the hill from Storybook land became the Datsun Dealership which became Nissan/Chrysler and now even that place is gone...................and yet that junkyard is still there LoLz

Remember how there used to actually be a truck weigh station out there near Opitz Blvd? Yeah, that chunk of the world has most CERTAINLY changed

ROUTE ONE QUESTION: does anybody recall a road sign that would light up, make a buzzing noise? For some reason, I remember like 2-3 of them at random places along Rt 1 between say Dumfries and Lorton. They would hang over the roadway and usually be darkened, but would light up and buzz for some reason, but I dont recall why. I may be COMPLETELY imagining this (not the first time I'd be crazy, right? LoLz) , but I'd swear they used to be there. Anybody recall this?

anywho, another old pic =)

@Hay-it's this pissant part of Arlington just south of Ballston on Glebe. It's just funny to see it in the paper as being "location" but in retrospect, it makes since cause it's a pretty old neighborhood..................

@Sleepy. I remember it being some sorta Indian restaurant I think, and it was a nightclub for a bit - I know some GMU B-ball players got into some trouble there one night LoLz. But those were in the place for maybe 6 months tops...........and over the course of maybe 5-10 years the place sat largely empty. I have no idea what was there before........I wanna say maybe something like a Moose Lodge, something like that......but I really dont have any memory of it at all.

I remember Weasel, though!

"LoLz I'm guessing this is all where the gravel pit is now"
Would be funny, except no. ARC was on the north side of Edsall - right underneath the condo/townhouse community. Site went from teardown of old buildings to new construction in about a year...
(oh, and the other ARC pics are from the old site beside Nissan Pavillion)

Yep. FWIW, there used to be a couple of nice baseball fields off Commercial & Industrial, along w/at least three ponds on the south side of Vulcan's site. All gone, and a couple of the ponds filled in. FWIW, there are more than a few acres around there I wouldn't care to walk across w/o a hazmat suit on...

there is a HUGE abandoned private school back in there. Been empty at lest a decade and a half - troopers hang out there all the time in the parking lot. Anyway I wonder if the fields and the school are connected

Could be - was a nice field until whoever built a basketball court in right field which turned it into a small (LL) field. IIRC it's under the Progressive Insurance office.

Sleepy Holla, I'm not sure what's there now. I'm currently in Fla. I remember Joe's Place/Pizza in the former Red Barn building next door. There was also a "massage" parlor called "The Underground" to the left of Buckaroo. The FPD used to raid it often. I wasn't old enough to visit said establishment, but got to survey the "talent" as they came in to eat lunch at Buckaroo.

Grand Union, I know there was one in Manassas and one in upstate New York near my Grandmas house, but that was early 70's,

at that time we shopped at Memco, the Butcher Shop at Hummer and 236 or Giant and Safeway in Kings park. We got fresh Corn and Beans from Mr Simpson on Burke Lake Rd, and had Eggs delivered by someone in a van, Potato Chips and Cookies came via Charlie Chips in reusable Metal Containers.

Washington Gas used to have an in-house baseball league that played on the piece of land that they built their new building Industrial Park in Springfield. The triangle shaped piece at the corner of Industrial and Commercial.

The private school was Chesapeake Ability School across from Vulcan/Virginia Cement and and next to Woodies old warehouse. Behind the school there was a tunnel that went under 395 to the other side where Marlo is located now. The former grass tracks.

About 12-15 years ago, the bodies of a woman and her son where found submerged in one of the abandoned quarries. Some sort of extortion plan that went horribly wrong.

There was an Ollies in Annandale? That pic looks like the one in Arlington, think it's still there?

Used to go to the one down by Shirley Park in Arlington all the time.
