The building that used to be the Penguin Feather in Annandale has recently been fixed up. I can remember when it was Rainbow Tree prior to being Penguin Feather. When I was 12 me and 2 friends, also 12, bought our first bong there. They even let us test it for leaks in their bathroom.

It used to have some character when the business was not some huge coroporate chain but had the owners personal flair. Now Fairfax is just a collection of strip malls exaclty like the other. Starbucks, Chipotles, chinese restaurant, grocery store, pizza hut, bank and gas station.

Yep, that's the way it is everywhere now. Used to be that you'd go to different places and they all were different with their own quirky little places and unique things to do and see. Now everywhere you go it's all been homogenized into pretty much the same bland crap.

Don't bother trying to explain it to the young bucks.

This was the trolley car station in Vienna. It was on the south side of Church Street, just west of the W&OD tracks. I believe service started in 1904. Vienna to 12th & Pennsylvania NW in just about an hour. The line closed for good in 1939.

So-called Midgetville was continuously inhabited (though not by midgets or other circus performers) until the Wedderburn family sold the tract to developers in 2002. There was a good deal of delay in getting zoning issues resolved and then the recession hit. The land was clear-cut in 2008 and so far a handful of useless, tasteless, uninspiring McMansions have been put up. Here is another photo from the area's far more intriguing past...

Yup...I grew up in KP. When we first started going to church there, the church had 2 Dutch priests. They started speaking out against Vietnam, were cautioned by the diocese and the Vatican and were eventually "relocated".

At the end of services, my Dad always used to stand up and say, "Catholics...start...your...engines!" They had this crazy parking lot arrangement where people would double, triple and quadruple park such that there'd be one car near the front of the lot inevitably driven by some slow walking blue hair who was the last to arrive. We'd all be sitting in our cars waiting for that one car to clear the lot and then it was the opening lap of the Indy500. It made me laugh everytime. 5 minutes ago we were all communing and saying "Peace be with you..." and celebrating brother and sisterhood and then...lighting off F-Bombs at each other in the parking lot as we all tore ass out of there, tires roasting because everyone drove a huge V-8 back then.

I had my baccalaureate there with LBSS, too...after which my crew and I went and saw, "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" which had just opened.

@Fairfax - it's a pic of Long Bridge , the railroad bridge of the "14th St Bridge" bridges.

@jack - I think Manuel's was at the corner of 29 and Shirley Gate, but I may be wrong about that............

here are some threads on "Midgetville" - apparently it was a pretty popular place here on the Underground LoLz

That is "The Long Bridge" on the site of the present day 14th street bridge.

Quote from wiki:

The first bridge at the site was the Long Bridge, a wooden toll bridge opened on May 20, 1809, by the Washington Bridge Company. It was the second bridge to cross the Potomac in the District of Columbia, following a 1797 span at a narrower crossing near Little Falls, upstream of Georgetown, at the site of the present Chain Bridge.

History of the Fairfax County Courthouse gives an in-depth look at the development of the Fairfax County courts during the past 50 years. Retired Chief Judge Barney Jennings, Retired Commonwealth’s Attorney Robert Horan, and John T. “Til” Hazel discuss the changes in Fairfax County as it grew from a farm community to a major suburban employment center, as reflected by the Fairfax County courts.

A store at present location of the Unitarian Church on Hunter Mill? I'd think Hunter Mill was very rural along its path 55 years ago with lots of farm acreage. I'd think only stores in the area would be in Oakton and in the other direction on Route 7?

Saw this on Facebook. Notice the lack of Pohanka and "future home of Anita's". Chantilly Billy's looks the same though.

I remember in the early 80's chantilly cash & carry sold handmade leather pouches for your metrocall pagers. We thought we were so high tech with our bulky beep only pagers on our hips.

Too bad what happened to Heart and Hand. The daughter just couldn't make a good go of it, granted it was probably her lack of customer service skills that did it.

What was in the restaurant building before Anita's I can't seem to remember?
Also the building that was next to the soon to be Anita's. The one that had the suit of armor in the front window for years. Did that have same owner as the Chantilly Cash and Carry? Who was the owner? When he died the family sold the land for road expansion or the county/VDOT took the land by way of eminent domain?

"Mass grave for 34 Confederate soldiers who died as POWs"

Was there a Union concentration camp in the D.C. area. I'd think they'd keep the prisons out of sight because of the conditions in them .

Several buildings in Alexandria were converted into hospitals during the war. The men buried here were Confederate soldiers who died in the various hospitals from their wounds or disease.

http://woodbridge-va.patch.com/listings/handy-dandy-market

Yes this store is in P.W. but you're a real old timer if you can name two other locations within Fairfax County boundaries

I've stopped in the woodbridge store off and on but they cut way back on the variety of items they carried a few years back around the time the son fully took over. carried a lot of items not found elsewhere. Maybe most of the companies died off

I can just go to 7/11 for same stuff now

Handy-Dandy Market #2 was in the original "town" of Burke, across from the fire station, about where the post office is today.

I'm not sure about the location of the third store.

Yes it was in there somewhere on the left as you were going westbound on 7. There was a movie theater in that area where I saw "Jaws" when it was first released. Remember also JKJ Chevrolet.

Zayre was where Tower Records used to be - I think it's a Staples now. That center also had a theater and Mr. Smith's restaurant / bar.

This is the Hampton inn at route 1 and the beltway (5821 Richmond highway).
It was originally a howard johnsons motor lodge. I think the first pic is from the late 70's

Great place! She was awesome. She was also a great counselor and has helped many kids in the community. To bad she married a man that is a drug addict and never had a job.

Better get some pictures of Woodlawn Stables near Belvoir at Route 1 and 235.

In what seems like a bone-head move to me, I think VDOT has elected to create a Route 1 bypass/widening through the stables, and the several 100 year old barns/houses, instead of widening the western side of Route 1 by some 40 feet...the Woodlawn Plantation would not be affected at all by that plan.

Seems like they are pursuing a much more costly/destructive plan to me.

Probably a website on it somewhere.
