The building that used to be the Penguin Feather in Annandale has recently been fixed up. I can remember when it was Rainbow Tree prior to being Penguin Feather. When I was 12 me and 2 friends, also 12, bought our first bong there. They even let us test it for leaks in their bathroom.

It used to have some character when the business was not some huge coroporate chain but had the owners personal flair. Now Fairfax is just a collection of strip malls exaclty like the other. Starbucks, Chipotles, chinese restaurant, grocery store, pizza hut, bank and gas station.

Yep, that's the way it is everywhere now. Used to be that you'd go to different places and they all were different with their own quirky little places and unique things to do and see. Now everywhere you go it's all been homogenized into pretty much the same bland crap.

Pizzarama over 35 years old not original owner. other store at Fairfax Circle Shopping Center closed over a year ago had been opened sme amount of time. Something about unpaid city taxes. I've heard that might be another Pizzarama out in Warrenton. don't know if this had been a chain at some time.

This was the trolley car station in Vienna. It was on the south side of Church Street, just west of the W&OD tracks. I believe service started in 1904. Vienna to 12th & Pennsylvania NW in just about an hour. The line closed for good in 1939.

Yup...I grew up in KP. When we first started going to church there, the church had 2 Dutch priests. They started speaking out against Vietnam, were cautioned by the diocese and the Vatican and were eventually "relocated".
At the end of services, my Dad always used to stand up and say, "Catholics...start...your...engines!" We'd all be sitting in our cars waiting for that one car to clear the lot and then it was the opening lap of the Indy500. This is the old Kinney shoe store in Kamp Washington. One of them businesses you go how can they stay open all these years and have so little business, and this was before the era of nail salons. Building is now a bike shop with extensive design changes.

Why is the Fairfax Library Photo Archivists such hard asses about copying photos that are probably in the public domain?
I've gone there a few times to just peruse but the biddies running the thing give you the old fisheye like your wanting to see secret government documents

this is the old General Motors training center(remember those old glory days) on Fairfax Blvd. in Fairfax City next to Jim McKay Chevrolet.

Picture of Virginia City which was in the area of the Costco on West Ox and route 29 was next to the Super 29 drive in theatre. Hunters Lodge was across West Ox road sort of were the new Fairfax County emergency center is located. but you got to throw in old Camp 30 in the mix.

Closer inspection of 2 buildings reveals to my elderly eyes that they are different.Both pictures identified on the several sites I saw them on as Tysons Corner. A store at present location of the Unitarian Church on Hunter Mill? I'd think Hunter Mill was very rural along its path 55 years ago with lots of farm acreage. I'd think only stores in the area would be in Oakton and in the other direction on Route 7?

Great Falls Historical Society with lots of phtographs of the area.
Don't know why the Fairfax County library can't do something like this. It is a public library after all. Can't they put a watermark on the photos if they want their credit?

What was in the restaurant building before Anita's I can't seem to remember?
Also the building that was next to the soon to be Anita's. The one that had the suit of armor in the front window for years. Did that have same owner as the Chantilly Cash and Carry? Who was the owner? When he died the family sold the land for road expansion or the county/VDOT took the land by way of eminent domain?

Yes it was in there somewhere on the left as you were going westbound on 7. There was a movie theater in that area where I saw "Jaws" when it was first released. Remember also JKJ Chevrolet.

Zayre and G.E.M. used to be on left heading West from 123 toward Leesburg. Tysons Cinema 7 was the movie theatre. Tyson's Locker... butcher shop on
other side of Rt. 7 that had the pig, cow and chicken murals painted on side of the building... was/is Orvis store now.

Better get some pictures of Woodlawn Stables near Belvoir at Route 1 and 235.
In what seems like a bone-head move to me, I think VDOT has elected to create a Route 1 bypass/widening through the stables, and the several 100 year old barns/houses, instead of widening the western side of Route 1 by some 40 feet...the Woodlawn Plantation would not be affected at all by that plan.
Seems like they are pursuing a much more costly/destructive plan to me.
Probably a website on it somewhere.
