Buy the damn floatation device - all the cool kids are wearing them these days

A 58-year-old Lorton man is dead after his kayak capsized in Pohick Bay Monday afternoon.

Police said John R. Funk, of the 10000 block of Midway Lane, was seen around 3:30 p.m. by witnesses as he was fishing from a kayak. Police said Funk’s kayak was seen capsizing about 100 yards from shore, and he was then seen swimming toward shore.

Police said witnesses yelled to Funk and ran for help, but he quickly disappeared under the water.

According to police, a helicopter search above Pohick Bay led first responders to him. Funk had not been wearing a personal floatation device, nor was one located in the kayak, police said. Funk was transported to Inova Mount Vernon Hospital, where he was officially pronounced dead.

Police said it is unclear what initially caused the kayak to capsize.

Sad. What was he thinking? Even seatbelts are cool now. Safety first!

I don't get it, are the currents so strong that one second your swimming then you get sucked under? Or do people like this get tired and can't stay above water?

If he was near the boat ramp, I don't see how he could drown, unless he's a midget.

I almost always kick up mud on my way out of there and the depth finder usually reads 4 feet or less.

The snakeheads are getting much bigger according to a biologists. Not a sermon, just a thought.

This article didn't mention all the can of Coors Light found at the scene. Like boater mentioned much of the bay is really shallow, but a drunk can drown in an inch of water.
