4 family members found dead at Herndon home

WASHINGTON - Four members of the same family were found dead in a home in Fairfax County Tuesday, police say.

The bodies were discovered around 12 p.m. after police entered the Herndon home on Point Rider Lane.

Crime scene investigators and homicide detectives have been called to the home.

Fairfax County Police say there is no current threat to the public.

Authorities will not say if any children are involved.

That's a nice neighborhood - not your typical Herndon ghetto.

Probably non-whites...

Disgruntled White folk are famous for killing family members and saving the last bullet for themselves.

Today we learned of a tragedy in our community. A family of four was found dead at 13391 Point Rider Lane, Herndon. While the names of the family members have not been released by the police or press at this time, this is the home of Al and Kathie Peterson, who have two sons, Christopher and Matthew. The Peterson family has attended Floris and their son, Chris, attended our recent Road Rules event with our student ministry. Many of you will know this family. Their sons were students at Rachel Carson Middle School and Westfield High School and played soccer, as well as participating in other events in the community. I just left the home of some Floris members who were a part of one of these soccer teams. Everyone is feeling a great deal of grief over this loss and are searching for answers that are not known at this time.

It is our desire at Floris to minister to the needs of our community. We will be holding a Candlelight Vigil at Floris tomorrow, Wednesday, September 26 at 7:30 p.m. Please invite the community and post this information where others can see it. Our desire is to provide a place where our members, friends, and community can gather to express their grief, pray, and stand in the light of God's love and hope together. Based on the facts reported to the Dispatch, Albert Peterson shot his wife and children while they were still in bed and then committed suicide. Police have yet to confirm these details.

Neighbor Alvaro Lopes spoke highly of Peterson family to the local CBS affiliate, but noted that Albert had tried to commit suicide previously and that the man’s heart attack medication seemed to change his personality.

“He seemed dizzy… just different,” Lopes said. “Hearing about what happened today made me think that could have something to do with it.”

“They were good people,” said Lopes. “Very quiet [and] would hang out in their front yard and do some barbecues.”

Fairfax County police spokeswoman Lucy Caldwell would not discuss whether the case was a murder-suicide, but said that homicide detectives are investigating and that there is no public safety threat.

WTOP spoke to a nearby neighbor, Jeremy Wilcox, who “said the family had been at a community picnic Sunday and showed no signs of any problem. He said the father would frequently be on his front porch waving to cars as they passed by, and that he sometimes stuck a plow on the front of his truck to clear a path for neighborhood cars when there was a snowstorm.”

I guarantee you he was using that snow plow to bury bodies...

Kids who went to church or school with the Petersons are being asked on various FB and G+ pages to wear black on Wednesday 9/26 and red on Friday 9/28 in their memory.

Some of the kids who knew one or both of the boys have been asking their principals AND principals at some other local schools (since kids at other schools may have gone to church with the family) for moments of silence, flags at half-mast, and similar recognitions of this sad event.

From what I hear, most of the schools are playing it safe - they have sent out KIT messages to parents alerting them that something is up, but not giving the family's name or any specifics as to how the school is planning to respond other than saying they'll have grief counseling available soon.

This is a horrible tragedy, and as someone in the mental health field, I have to say: posting ignorant, inflammatory opinions about things of which you have no understanding only makes you look like a mental midget with a chip on his shoulder. You should ask yourselves: why would they care so much about this over in the UK? And if you're helping out a reporter, why aren't you helping a local one so that local family, friends, and neighbors can better deal with this tragedy? Sounds like someone's priorities are messed up. At least two peoples' priorities, really - the Daily Mail writer's and the source's.

The Daily Mail is a tabloid aimed at women, and this is exactly the kind of tragedy that you can see them fretting over, clucking over how awful things are in America.

The author seems to be a freelancer based out of New York. Her web site is http://emilyanneepstein.com/.

The reason it hasn't gotten more play here is because, sadly, some guy taking out his whole family and then popping himself is fairly common in Fairfax County; it's happened a number of times, going at least back to Joe Matthews beating his kids to death with a baseball bat in Springfield back in the late 50's (his wife survived because she ran out of the house to the FBI agent who lived next door).

Little of what she says is confirmed by any neighbor or any other news source.

Was she his secret lover? Or was she in some other way involved in the death of the family?

I do hope investigators are having a long conversation with her.

The Funeral Mass for Kathie, Matthew and Christopher Peterson will take place at St. John Neumann Church in Reston on Thursday, October 4th at 10:00am. Visitation will be Wednesday, October 3rd from 5:00 - 8:00 pm also at the church.

Why would the visitation and mass be at St. John Neumann if they went to Floris UMC?

The Petersons were registered members of St. John Neumann (despite all the news reports that they attended FUMC...if they did change churches/religions, they never rescinded their names from SJN). So, when the family requested a Catholic Mass for the mom and the two boys, the request was granted.

I've also noticed how a UK paper seems to have more on breaking news in the US than our reporters (I think they were first with details on the Batman movie shooting). I don't know how they do it but I've wondered about it too.

Husband, wife and two school-aged children discovered Tuesday in a Point Rider Lane home

Herndon, VA — Herndon's Point Rider Lane neighborhood is reeling Tuesday after learning a family of four was found dead inside a home there this morning.

Police were called out to the home in the 13300 block of Point Rider Lane at about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday to do a welfare check on the family after a coworker of one of the adults notified police they hadn’t been to work Monday or Tuesday, police said.

Police breached the home at about noon and found the bodies of two adults and two Fairfax County school aged-children, Fairfax County Police Spokeswoman Lucy Caldwell said.

Caldwell said they have not released a cause of death and next of kin has not yet been notified. She said the preliminary investigation has found no threat to the community.

Neighbors say the family that lived in the home was friendly and helpful, sometimes helping clear snow after a storm and always waving.

Ed Swanson Jr., a neighbor of six years, said he’s shocked something like this happened in the community. He said the husband was a "good guy" who was helpful and the neighborhood "has been awesome."

Another neighbor, Sherry Webster, said her son had been friends with the family’s two boys when they were younger. She said it will be difficult to tell her son what happened.

Webster said the parents were outgoing, neighborly, and a cute couple.

“She was full of energy,” she said of the wife.

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the death of a member of our school community, Chris Peterson, an eighth grade student. Matthew Peterson, a past Carson student who was a sophomore at Westfield, also lost his life in this tragic event.

A sudden loss like this can have an effect on students. For that reason, we hope that you will listen to your son or daughter as well as discuss with them their feelings and reactions to this tragedy.

Crisis intervention is an essential part of support to healthy learning environments. We have implemented a plan for responding to this tragic event focused on helping our students get back to regular learning and everyday activities as soon as possible. We will try to maintain as normal a routine and structure as the situations allows, and we encourage you to do the same. We have a crisis response team in place to assist staff, students, and parents. This afternoon, FCPD released the identity of the victims involved in the tragic events in Herndon that have been reported via multiple media sources since yesterday.

It is with sadness that I share with you that Westfield 10th grader, Matthew Peterson, was among the deceased discovered on the scene. Matthew was a very pleasant and personable young man who participated actively in wrestling and track at Westfield. Matthew had lots of friends and will always be remembered in a positive light by those who knew him. He will be missed and the Westfield family mourns his loss.

Our students were remarkable today. I commend them for their behavior, resilience, and empathy. I also wanted to recognize the efforts of the school counselors, teachers, administrators, support staff and Crisis Response Team for maintaining a keen focus on the emotional needs of our students during this difficult time of grief and sorrow. Support will remain available for students and staff as we continue to strike the delicate balance between grief and recovery.

I’m including information that parents/guardians may find helpful as you deal with your own students at home. Please do not hesitate to contact your student’s school counselor if you are concerned about the manner in which your student has responded to the event. In addition, we were informed that there will be a candlelight vigil tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Floris United Methodist Church in Herndon.

Here are some guidelines for Parents/Guardians to consider Regarding the Death of a Child.

Your child may exhibit one or a number of possible reactions following this experience over the next several weeks. Reactions may include:

1.Tearfulness
2.Sleep problems
3.Irritability
4.Clingy behavior
5.Somatic complaints such as: headaches, stomachaches, and fatigue.
If your child continues to demonstrate these reactions over an extended period of time or if your child’s reactions are extreme at any time, you are encouraged to contact your student’s school counselor, the school psychologist, or the school social worker.

How to help your child cope with grief

1.Allow your child to talk about the death, express fears, cry, and be sad.
2.Use the deceased person’s proper name and use correct terminology when talking about the death. For example, say “dead” instead of “he’s passed on.”
3.Explain your feelings to your child, especially if you are crying. Parents/Guardians are role models and it’s normal for children to see your sadness and to share your feelings.

The family of four found dead Tuesday inside a home on Point Rider Lane in Herndon was killed in a murder suicide, police said Wednesday.

A Fairfax County Police Department investigation revealed Albert Peterson, 57, killed his wife, Kathleen Peterson, 52, and their children, Matthew, 16, and Christopher, 13, before taking his own life.

The Virginia Office of the Medical Examiner determined the cause of death for each of the four family members was gunshot wounds to the upper body, according to police.

Yesterday neighbors gathered throughout the neighborhood as police and press descended on the property after the initial report. A coworker of one of the adults called the police to ask for a welfare check after they hadn't been to work in two days.

Police breached the home at about noon on Tuesday and found the bodies.

A candlelight vigil will be held for the family tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Floris United Methodist Church.

Well...it really was his fault. He was the one that killed his family and then himself. Was it sad that he killed his family, HELL YES IT WAS. Your grammar and syntax are abysmal. Beyond that, yes, it's sad that the family is dead. It's sad that a father did it. He wielded the gun. He pulled the trigger. He killed them. It's not a matter of "he was on drugs." No court in the country would buy that. Maybe California, but they're nuts.

You can love them all you want. Telling us to "Shut the F**K up" shows that you really don't need to be posting here. If you don't like what we say, don't come here. Do yourself a favor.

I live just down the road from where this happened and this area of Herndon (actually called Oak Hill) is affluent. This particular subdivision is older modest homes built in the 80s, but the subdivisions right next door are McMansions. Herndon downtown proper is where you can find the lower income housing. It takes me 25-30 mins to drive into DC with no traffic. Of course with traffic it can be an hour.

Albert Peterson shot dead his wife and two sons hours after going to church because he dreaded the thought of Obama winning the election, a family friend has revealed.

A confidante of the family for the past 25 years has spoken to MailOnline about the strength and grace of the Peterson family, as well as the torment that plagued Albert which drove him to shoot dead his wife Kathleen and his two sons Christopher and Mathew at their suburban home in DC on Sunday.

A history of mental illness, the loss of a dear uncle, and a growing fear of Obama winning a second term in the White House took its toll on the mind of Mr Peterson, a wealthy defense contractor, the friend said.

'He just did not want his kids inheriting this mess,' Maggie L, who did not wish to reveal her last name, told MailOnline. 'Sometimes we thought he might take his own life when he was so depressed. We never thought he would take Kathie's.'


Albert, 57, Kathleen, 52, Matthew, 16, and Christopher, 13, were found Tuesday just after noon inside their home in Herndon, Virgina. Co-workers reported to police that they were concerned that Mr and Mrs Peterson had not reported to work for the past two days.

Mr Peterson was a defense contractor and Mrs Peterson worked at Blackbird Technologies, a company that specializes in defense, law enforcement and intelligence work.

Chris was an eighth grader at Rachel Carson Middle School and Matthew was a sophomore at Westfield High School. Both were avid soccer players and active at their church.

The preliminary police investigation indicates that Albert Peterson killed his wife and their children before taking his own life. Each of the deceased died of gunshot wounds to the upper body.


Maggie had been a friend of the family for the past three decades.

'I've known Kathie since I was 21. She's been like a sister to me,' Maggie said. 'If she knew her husband would have done this to her, she would have protected those boys till the end.'

Albert and Kathleen Ortiz were married some 25 years ago, Maggie said, and met over a mutual love of fitness.Mrs Peterson, who was Puerto Rican, had an indomitable spirit, always active and pursuing adventure, Maggie said.

'That girl had such a zest for life,' Maggie sad. 'She was a consummate planner. She never wanted to waste an ounce of life.'

She continued: 'If I was having a crappy day, she would come. If I needed advice, I said, "Kathie, what do I do? What do I say?" and she always set me straight. She always had advice. She was always there.'


Mr Peterson's life was punctuated by bouts of paranoia that became so severe, he wallowed in his depression, gained weight, and contemplated taking his own life.
In one dark episode, after his mother died five years ago, his wife had to pull him from the brink of suicide.

'Kathie was a strong person and she probably put her foot down, like she did five years ago,' Maggie said. 'Kathie couldn't believe the way he was acting and how he thought.'

'She wanted to be out doing something - biking, hiking, tubing and I know that frustrated Al. She just wanted to be living life and he took that from her,' she said.

Maggie said that this spring, Mr Peterson lost his Uncle Bill to an infection, whom he looked up to as the family patriarch. 'He felt like there was no one left in his family,' Maggie said.

Mrs Peterson's family never fully warmed to Mr Peterson, Maggie said.
'I know that Kathie's brother hates him right now. Kathie's brother didn't speak to Al,' Maggie said. 'He saw something in Al that probably didn't sit well with him.'

Recently, Mr Peterson began writing paranoid emails to his friends and family about politics on a daily basis, sometimes even more frequently, Maggie said.

But as time went on, Mr Peterson's paranoia and the demons from his past prevented him from enjoying life, his friends and his family.
'He's had difficulty his whole life,' Maggie said. 'He had a rough time with paranoia.'

At a young age, Maggie said, both his father and his uncle committed suicide.

'His dad suffered from alopecia and it was something he couldn't live with,' Maggie said.

After Mr Peterson's Uncle John killed himself, Maggie said that both Petersons were unnerved as they had frequently sent their children to his home to spend time with him.

'When Uncle John died, [Mr Peterson] kicked himself and said "God, what would have happened if our sons were there when it happened?"' Maggie recalled.

Thinking back on the eerie precursor, Maggie is still dumbfounded.
'It just never crossed our minds,' she said.


As close as she was to the family, Maggie still cannot come to grips with what happened.

'To think that their father could do this to them...' Maggie said, weeping. 'The boys were so beautiful.'

Matthew was born premature, Maggie said, and she remembers how small he was- tiny enough to fit in the palm of her hand.

'This boy was something special. Matthew didn’t have a mean bone in body. He protected kids that were bullied in school,' she said.

Last weekend, Maggie, Kathleen, Matthew and Christopher attended a Mitt Romney rally together.

That's when Matthew told Maggie his plans for college.

'I asked him where he wanted to go to college. He said Liberty University. He was so excited about going,' she said, weeping.

Mr Peterson never made it to the rally. He got stuck trying to park the car and since his knees were bad, he couldn't walk to the event.

'Those boys were raised by one of the best Moms. Kathie knew every minute where her boys were. Those boys were never in trouble.'
Students at Rachel Carson Middle School and Westfield High School wore black to school on Wednesday to mourn their classmates. On Thursday, they wore white as a sign of peace.

Still wonder to this day what happened to my best friend chris... their house was also recently bought by someone... wonder if they know what happened there... RIP Gone but not forgotten Peterson's.

but i think some foreigner purchased the gun in his name, shot the family, and you'll see foreigners moving into the home shortly
