Now that Sheriff Stan Barry-aka The DROP master- has his term expire in 2015,is there any chance someone else will run? What about Bill Cooper, who lost by a small margin last November?

True. All the sherriff's do the same piss-poor job. Get rid of one that is corrupt just to elect another one which is just as much of a criminal.

The only people affected by who the sheriff is, are the inmates at the jail, Unless you are planning on spending some time there, move on to more important matters.

I can't remember the candidates name now but a few years ago one of
the candidates listed his education as a Bachelors degree from National Lewis
University. Nothing but a freaking diploma mill.

Cooper is the stronger candidate...name recognition in the county and money to follow. Watch this race...it is coming in 2 yrs.

Yea I wonder if that guy will get back in? Why is the race coming back in two years instead of four? Didn't Barry just start a new term in 2012? What happened? anybody know?

Election is in 3 years, but you will know in 2 years who the players are. Of course Barry could retire any time now, especially now that he has fleeced Fairfax County through the DROP program-meant for non-elected employees. At that point there will be a special election and then all bets are off.

Fairfax is a Democratic leaning county...all the next guy-or gal needs to do is be a Democrat. Cooper can run again but he will almost certainly get the same result- 46 percent of the vote and carry Sully and maybe Springfield.

Nobody cares-yet...but they will. This office needs a change to someone who will actually do some law enforcement in the county..

The next Sheriff will be someone from outside the current agency. It will be a surprise and will put some of the less than talented people in that agency on notice-or out!! There are some talented vets who may run-so you never know....

I'll vote for whoever signs form 4's. Then again I think that requirement is finally going away.

The race will be an almost exact copy of the last race. Coper has said that he is running again for sure. He ran an incompetent and overconfident campaign last time and is sure to do so again. Anyone who heard him speak at the republican events had to cringe at his lack of skills. That is why he skipped all of the debates. Having heard him speak I agree with that decision. If Barry's Chief Deputy runs he will no doubt run the same low profile campaign that Barry ran and rely on the raw democrat numbers county wide. Unless this guy Sites is a loser, that will be a winning strategy. The truth is that other than Sully and Springfield no magisterial district is an easy win for a republican. It will take a lousy democrat candidate to give any republican in any office a chance of winning county wide. So, Cooper will be almost 60 years old at the next election cycle with no executive experience in the Sheriff's Office and no experience at all for the 5 years he has been retired. The Chief Deputy will have several years in the number 2 position, be in his 40's and running as a democrat county wide. Unless something bizarre happens Cooper loses by 8 points minimum.

Probably none of them. However, the number of posts being made by private sector employees who should be working is another question entirely.

Sleeper 3 obviously is either the man running or very close to him-meaning this new Chief Deputy. While what you say looks good on paper...never under estimate the unknown..and who will help the unknown.Much can happen in the coming 2 years.

original sleeper,

My main point was not regarding the quality of the candidates it was regarding the current electorate in Fairfax County. Right now, in a county wide race, it would be very improbable that a republican could win any office. This becomes more pronounced in the down ballot races that people are mostly unaware of such as sheriff, clerk of court, soil and water and even school board in some cases. In these races party ID is the biggest factor in who will win in Fairfax. Fairfax has been democrat leaning for several years and becomes more so each year. Right now a republican can only count on winning Springfield and Sully. As John Cook has proven Braddock is winnable if you are a moderate and have good name recognition. Other than those districts the democrat has a very big advantage. The last time a republican won anything other than Springfield and Sully in a contested sheriff race was 1991. If the republicans were to field a great candidate with name recognition and the democrats fielded a flawed candidate then it may be a close race. Otherwise, if you have two decent candidates, the democrat wins easily. You are correct, there remain many unknowns in this race but given the things that we do know it is improbable that the republican candidate will win the race.

that's funny.....when you own your own company and can be independently wealthy you get to do what you want, when you want.....if you're a county employee you're wasting tax dollars...lots of waste in that agency....it's apparent every time election comes up in here.

Bill Cooper will NEVER be the sheriff of Fairfax County....PERIOD! It doesn't matter how many times he runs for office, how much money he has, or the number of "connections" he established in the community during his last go around. It just won't happen and, whether he or his boys realize it or not, that has already been established. The next sheriff election will not be "exciting to watch", nor will it be close. Bill Cooper will NEVER be the sheriff of Fairfax County.
