I'm new to the Annandale area (near Briar Creek Dr.) and I thought I heard a train one night while walking. Are there tracks nearby?

There is a rail line that crosses Backlick Road midway between Annandale and Springfield and then passes through Accotink Park. Depending on the level of background noise train horns and sometimes other train noises can be heard for some distance.

Conversation; You likely heard the only train line we have which is AMTRACK that carries a few passangers twice a day during the rush hours, and rest are freight train. I live in Vienna, and on somedays, I also hear the the freight trains going by.

Conversation: I hear train passing through sometimes also their horns, freight trains early in the morning when the winds are blowing in certain directions.

It's really not bad, but sometimes nostalgic as "passing of trains' have connotation of life in the arts. I wonder what it was like before the
diesel engines when there was steam engines in America ?

Were the sound of the trains different ?

Neither a wise man nor a brave man lies down on the tracks of history to wait for the train of the future to run over him.

I know you are waxing poetic, but...

In the 1980s Southern Railway still had turning facilities in Alexandria and operated steam loco excursions headed out to the Shenandoah or down to Charlottesville or Lynchburg. On a couple of occasions I was able to see them head through Lake Accotink park. Anyone who has had the experience will know that steam locos are a very different experience from diesels. I'm not sure whether a steam whistle or a diesel horn carries further.

A train through Lake Accontink Park ? Wow !

Just to get a picture of how steam trains changed America in the 19th Century, a video, classic movie, I just checked out of the Fairfax Public Library and just returned it today.

"3:10 To Yuma" with Glen Ford and Van Heflin.

The train is really a memory and the "good guys and bad guys" stuff.

It's a bit slow moving movie for today's world but , I watched the "3:10 to Yuma" coming through several times over at the end.

On the Question of Train Whistles (Steam vs Diesel)
-------------------------------------------------------------------
To know which whistle goes further, you gotta find their frequencies first.

Make a audio recording and then view it on the computer ?

Most diesel locomotives have horns, not whistles.

One issue you will run into on a comparison is that there are more variables on a steam whistle than on a diesel horn.
