Sent on behalf of Douglas A. Tyson, Assistant Superintendent, Region 1

Dear Thoreau Parents,

We are writing to inform you that Principal Yusef Azimi is on leave, effective immediately. Mr. Jon Coch, an experienced educator who is currently the principal at Navy Elementary School, will be the interim principal of Thoreau Middle School, beginning November 18, 2019.

Mr. Coch has been with FCPS since 2002. He started his career as a classroom teacher at Groveton Elementary School and Silverbrook Elementary School. In 2007, he was promoted to assistant principal at Newington Forest Elementary School and was appointed to serve as principal at Navy Elementary in 2011. He has succeeded in building and sustaining a high performing professional learning community as well as implementing initiatives that promote student achievement. He led Navy Elementary to four consecutive years of recognition by earning the Governor’s Award for Educational Excellence – the highest award issued by the state through the Virginia Index of Performance program. Mr. Coch is highly respected in Fairfax County for his many years of outstanding leadership to the district.

Mr. Coch earned bachelor’s degrees in accounting and elementary education from Indiana University and Clarion University along with a master’s degree in Educational Leadership in Administration and Supervision from George Mason University.

We recognize the suddenness of Mr. Azimi’s departure but, as this is a personnel matter, my office and FCPS are not at liberty to disclose any additional details. I am planning to introduce Mr. Coch to our faculty and staff on Monday, Nov. 18. In addition, Mr. Coch and I will organize a meeting with the Thoreau community so you will have an opportunity to meet him in person.

I am confident Mr. Coch’s presence will ensure that student success in the classroom remains our primary focus. Thank you for your continuing support of Thoreau Middle School.

Sincerely,

Douglas A. Tyson

Assistant Superintendent, Region 1
