Interesting. The strip of 50 (well 29/50) in Fairfax city that runs in front of the Denny's and everything is going to be renamed Fairfax Boulevard. They're doing lots of other cool stuff too. Article here: http://www.connectionnewspapers.com/article.asp?article=45452&paper=63&cat=139

So this means that Route 50 is going to be called Constitution Avenue, Arlington Boulevard, Lee Highway, Main Street, Fairfax Boulevard, Lee Jackson Memorial Highway, and John S. Mosby Memorial Highway in just the stretch going from Route 28 into D.C.? I've had a hard enough time over the years trying to give people directions due to the name changes and this isn't going to make things any easier in my opinion. Just another name to add to the confusion anybody from outside the city (and many inside) is going to face.

U.S. Rt. 50 begins at Ocean City, MD and continues west to its intersection with California Hwy 1 in San Francisco. I have driven on most of this road across the U.S. Many names, many towns. . . the tradition continues.

No big deal.

we all know that, we were merely discussing this particular area, because most of the rest of the country is an even more horrible dump than here and we could give a flying fuck less about it.

Yeah. It's just a way for the 'local' jurisdictions to distract the people into stopping in the very jurisdiction doing this. This is an old/ancient 'scam' to get people to stop and hopefully spend money. Been discussed many times and is TRUE. The businesses can't make the money HONESTLY, so they come up with this SCAM to 're-name' a road eight different ways from rt. 28 to DC.

Judging by all the empty storefronts along Fairfax Blvd. in Fairfax City it didn't work. And that was the case before the depression hit.

Small quibble, but I think it actually ends in Sacramento when it runs into I-80. Always annoyed me how it was extremely close to going literally coast-to-coast but didn't quite make it.
