Before I post on Craigslist, I wanted the input from the FU. Are there any folks that continue too use and enjoy their VHS tapes? I have several hundred. Most are backup copies of movies. I find I don't use them with DVR, so it's time to see if there's a market for them. Most are high quality and recorded only one time.

Even when I used VHS, I don't think I would buy a dub of a movie. What are you going to charge per tape? A buck? If it is low enough you might get some interest, but odds are the movies you have on VHS are available in the market already - new - for $5 or $10.

My friend has a few hundred VHS movies, real ones still in the boxes, not dubbed. He put them out at his last yard sale, something like fifty cents a movie. He didn't sell any at all. And this was at a busy yard sale.

I was surprised someone didn't at least come by and scoop up a bunch of the Disney crap for their kids or something.

Good points. Thank you. I was hoping I might find an aficionado out there. I really have seen the technology obsolete my toys, such as audio cassettes, cassette player, 8mm, videodiscs, videodisc player, record player, FM amplifier, etc. All top of the line (Panasonic, Sony, etc.). I gave four TVs (Sony, RCA) and hundreds of CD programs to Good Will...maybe they'll take VHS tapes. Other ideas?

you want to sell copies of commercial VHS tapes or television crap? why not copy some DVD movies and sell those too?

I still use a VHS to record shows. I just leave a tape in and have it weekly programmed to record my favorite shows. Works great, no need for a TiVo yet.

Other than recording shows I wouldn't buy movie tapes for it. The tapes are bulky and the quality just isn't there.

I've moved a lot my favorite movies to a 500 GB harddrive. Works great. I just click on what I want to watch and in seconds the movie starts. No more searching for a DVD.

goodwill is your best bet... by far..

If it is porn, you should have no problem. However, given that they are VHS, I imagine the movies are pretty old, so they will feature lots of bush.

here's the problem with VHS
they eventually lose quality, over time. Even if you never play them, you will notice a difference. I used to record car races, and now the tape is shit. It is still good if you don't have a DVR and want to catch a program, then be done with it. but nowadays, I get my shows in HIGH QUALITY rips off the internet. No need for DVR or VHS for me anymore.

I didnt read everyone's comments but take the things to the fucking dump. Nobody is going to want VHS tapes -- let alone someone else's....lol

Ah the age of no patience. If you look on ebay some stuff on vhs is way up there in price. Depends on what you got which is true of most collectables
even antiques unless your in a fad bubble. If you don't want to bother with online sales Ebay has sales assistants too handle that kind of stuff. No I am not one of them. Again you got to have good stuff and sell in packs to make it worthwhile. But if OP has them taped on VHS blank tapes from TV pretty worthless. Could donate to a nursing home. Maybe some kind of tax credit but doubt it. But you'd be doing a nice thing for people getting ready to meet the grim reaper. Just no porn they might get too excited.


I have a large number of original movie and tv vhs tapes. Lot of them I know will probably never come out on dvd (especially now) and for sure never at redbox or blockbuster box and I doubt ever online cause the folks who program the offerings have little knowledge of anything other main stream stuff

I bought a few dvd/ vcr players that will probably last my lifetime. Still available at Wallymarts. Damn I waited to long to buy up some cd recorders!


You can take your original movie and tv vhs tapes out to McKays Book Store in Manassas(across from Manassas Mall, you can go to Checkers, Man I love the fish sandwich, way better than Golden Arches, nice Hooters too!) and get store credit( they do get some very good books in trade, give credit slip as a Christmas gift) but if you have widely known tapes they might not take them but you would be supporting a local business and pretty much the last place I know of in Northern Virginia. There is C&W books but they closed Chantilly store a year ago and have one store left down by Potomac Mills. I bitched to them the prices they charged for VHS were way to high so the product just sat on the shelf. Maybe policy has changed or they dropped vhs altogether.

Don't get me started on Goodwill/Salvation Army and the business consultants they use
