I'm new to the area and already I'm feeling uneasy riding the metro. Then today a girlfriend of mine told me that a girl my age was attacked. I thought she was kidding until I heard the story on Channel 7......


Woman gang-raped near Greenbelt Metro

A 24-year-old College Park woman who had left the Greenbelt Metro station and was walking along Cherrywood Lane around 4 a.m. was gang raped early Saturday.

Police say up to four men jumped out and dragged her back near a wooded area. They raped her and beat her. The ordeal lasted for nearly an hour.

The victim finally managed to get back out to Cherrywood Lane and flag down some joggers, who called police. She was treated at the hospital for severe facial injuries and released Saturday night.

“I've been a police officer here in Greenbelt for 27 years and this is certainly one of the most disturbing incidents that has occurred during my time here,” says one officer.

News of the attack startled people who walk in the area of the assault, which is near a community center, the Franklin Park apartments and a small garbage-strewn creek.

“Why would somebody do that do her, like at random--people is cruel around here,” says Raynell Dawkins.

Anyone with any information about last Saturday's gang rape along Cherrywood Lane is asked to contact Greenbelt Police Criminal Investigations Unit at 301-542-2133.

Well the question is still valid. Every since the metro stations have been opened, criminal activity has increased around those areas.

Such question may be valid, but it has nothing to do with the post.

The event 1) didn't happen in Virginia, 2) didn't happen on Metro property, and 3) didn't even happen while Metro was open.

Are the suspects hispanic or black? I'm betting on hispanic, but black is a distinct possibility.

It's a shame what happened to that woman and I hope the people who attacked her get what they deserve.

But "walking through a bad neighborhood late at night" is still "walking through a bad neighborhood late at night" regardless of how far away the nearest metro station might be.

I think suspects were black.

Gang rapists should be burned alive no matter what their skin colour, though..................

Well, at least you don't have to worry about Trayvon Martin commiting any crimes around Metro stations

Consider this, first of all Greenbelt. People's of Republic of Maryland next. They do not allow conceal carry. That pretty much sums it up.

I lived around there back in the 90s, that area behind Beltway Plaza and the metro was always low-income and creepy, and based on google maps it looks like the ghetto apartments are still there. Greenbelt has some good and bad neighborhoods, but Cherrywood Lane is probably the worst place to be walking around on your own late at night.

Well it is really simple...Math. There are many many more people around that area before. Before, empty lot or filed. With Metro thousand of riders.
