The part near Pittsburgh, PA is real rundown and dirty looking, and so are the people that live there. I spent the night in Wheeling, WV about ten years ago, and I'd put it toward the top of my list of "depressing places to visit". Even people from the crappier suburbs of Pittsburgh make fun of Wheeling.

WVA is a great place for outdoor activites, not such a great place for dentistry and quality of life.

Shepherdstown is tight. Its real artsy and there is an awesome restaurant called the Blue Moon. Its only an hour or so from Centreville/ Chantilly. Worth the trip on a weekend sometime
