550 abuse claims filed against Wis. archdiocese

MILWAUKEE (AP) - About 550 people have filed claims for restitution for alleged sexual abuse by clergy in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee _ the most of the eight dioceses in the U.S. that have sought bankruptcy protection, a lawyer in the Milwaukee case said Wednesday. James Stang, a bankruptcy lawyer who represents creditors in the Wisconsin case, estimated about 550 claims had been filed by the Wednesday afternoon deadline set by the court. The Milwaukee Archdiocese filed for bankruptcy protection last year, saying pending sex-abuse lawsuits could leave it with debts it couldn't afford.

How can catholics be bankrupt, doesnt the pope have plenty stashed away in the Vatican? Yeah I know this is a separate entity well not in my book. If any of the churchs money flows to the pope then it should also flow back the other way to victims of abuse. 550 claims, even if you projected half were just looking for money with no real abuse occurring that still leaves 275 real cases. It is time to tax these churchs just like any other money making enterprise. Make them carry insurance to settle these claims. In other words treat them like any other business.

The Catholic church is not the only church where sexual abuse happens. It happens in all churches.
