Kauai was really nice 15-20 years ago, but I think that all of the resort development on the north side around Princeville has really changed the nature of the island. There are still beautiful beaches and no limit on things to do, but the magic of Kauai is largely gone and seems a lot like Maui. Not that Maui isn't beautiful, but it is far from the tranquil haven that it once was.
The great destinations rarely remain a secret and even my recommendation, Costa Rica, is suffering from massive over development as a result of relatively low land prices, a stable, safe country, proximity to the US and the ability to provide fun, safe vacations for families and adults of all ages.
There was a reason that they selected Kauai to film South Pacific, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Jurassic Park.
