Happy 150th birthday, Confederate Flag
Posted by: TJ Jackson ()
Date: March 04, 2011 01:53PM

Today marks the 150th birthday of the original Stars & Bars.

Can't wait until September when Fairfax can celebrate the 150th of the battle flag. The marker at Main & Oak Streets, Farifax:

Inscription: During the First Battle of Manassas, amid the smoke of combat, troops found it difficult to distinguish between Union and Confederate flags. Generals P.G.T. Beauregard, Joseph E. Johnston and Quartermaster General William L. Cabell met near here in September 1861 and approved the first Confederate battle flag; a square red flag with blue diagonally crossed bars, and 12 stars. This pattern was adapted for use in other battle flags and was incorporated into the Confederate national flag in 1863. Beauregard's headquarters also hosted the 1 Oct. 1861 Fairfax Court House conference, during which Confederate President Davis and his generals plotted strategy.

Happy Birthday to the most traitorous, anti-American thing a person can display. Come salute a foreign flag symbolizing slavery and the deaths of more than 300,000 American soldiers.

Slavery existed for many, many years under the American flag. 300,000 American soldiers would not have had to die if Virginia was not invaded.

The state's rights to own slaves and take up arms against the United States.

Robert E. Lee should have been hung like a terrorist the moment he was captured.

State's Right?! Slavery, was the driving force behind the war. Sure, most of those who fought in the war, owned little to no slaves (a rich man's war fought by the poor), but come on. If State's Rights were the case, when California came into the Union as a free state, it would not have set the wheels in motions for a Civil War. California being a free state (state's right) put a physical limit to how far west slavery could spread. This didn't sit well in the south.

If police surrounded a hostage-taker who later comes out and surrenders, and reports say "police captured the suspect", the story would be correct and accurate.

You aren't arguing semantics, you are arguing historical facts, which is really dumb. At no time was Lee in the command and control of Grant - hence, he wasn't captured. At no point di Grant put the cuffs on Lee - unlike your failed analogy above.

And I suppose all those Japanes guys wearing top hats and tuxes surrendering on the USS MO were "captured" too? LOL

Robert E. Lee should have been hung like a terrorist?

I'm a Yankee and proud of that. But I now live in Virginia and have learned a lot about the history of this great state. Robert E. Lee was no terrorist. He was an honorable man with conflicted loyalties. His decision had little to zero to do with slavery. Hanging him would have made the South all the more bitter and would have delayed the start of a (long enough as it was) healing process. You must be an idiot to think he should have been hung. He was no threat at all to the US after the war. What would have been the purpose of killing him?

Hatred like yours leads to more hatred. It does nothing good. We need to put this chapter behind us. I don't especially like seeing the "stars and bars" displayed just because the people who display it seem to do so for divisive reasons. As a historical symbol, I have no problem with it. But, unfortunately, it is often displayed with other intentions.

Dear Yankees,

If the South WON....
Our country would have been a better place to live than it is now. The war between the states was a war of states' rights vs. a strong federal government.
Our country would have been more in line with what the founders had in mind if the South won. Our founding fathers never intended the intrusive and confiscatory system of big government that we have now. Laws, as they should, would be made at the local and state level and a weak federal system could not inflict itself on the people. The founders were smart. They knew that strong centralized government was not good for the people. The very reason the right to keep and bear arms is in the constitution is not to protect you from grizzly bears but to protect you from the government. They even advocate the overthrow of the government if it becomes oppressive. Of course our government schools would never teach that truth. As far as the army is concerned, the federal government could do that with money collected from tariffs, not personal income taxes. But alas, we did not win. The Lost Cause (State's Rights) was lost and now we have a form of democracy (mob rule) that little resembles the Republic that those Founders birthed so many years ago.

The Battle Flag was adopted by the segregationist movement in the 1950s. The real Confederate Flag was the Stars and Bars, not the Battle Flag. In fact, many Confederate leaders of the day disparaged the Battle Flag, even referring to it as "suspenders."

The Battle Flag rose to prominence as a symbol of racism, not as some icon of Southern Heritage.

The flag of failure. It's right up there with British Honduras, Rhodesia and Zanzibar. Totally irrelevant and an icon of history.

If the South has almost won, it would be a symbol of antagonism. But the South failed big time so it's nothing more than an amusement. Today, it is the flag of Civil War hobbyist and those who have pride in being from the South.

Actually, everytime I see the confederate flag, it makes me think of that sweet '69 Dodge Charger (General Lee) on Dukes of Hazzard.

God Bless the Confederacy and God Bless the Battle Flag. The Southerners of 1861 did precisely what Southern slaveowners like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson did in 1776;they declared independcence. More importantly, had their vision of America materialized, their country (the CSA) would be a safe haven from the filthy, corrupt, drug-infested, prostitute-filled, crime-ridden influences that permeate Norhtern cities like Philadelphia, Chicago, Detroit, New York,Boston, Cleveland, Newark and Pittsburgh. And in the CSA the negroes would be disciplined and productive, and not murdering, pimping, whoring, thieves. Illegals would be non-existent. And it is an absolute shame that that stupid, quasi-literate, ignoramus bumkpkin, lawless, mass-murdering tyrant Lincoln became President. He was, however, properly executed by John Wilkes Boothe, a hero if there ever was one.

Some good points raised here. Another one is that the southern negro agricultural laborers(slaves if you insist) had a far superior quality of life when compared to the quality of life of the northern negroes. The agricultural laborers were better fed, clothed, housed, and also had acess to quality medical care that northern negroes never had.

Yeah, and in the same alternate universe northern negroes were all stockbrokers, lawyers, doctors, architects and lawyers. And the northern negroe were highly paid, with huge mansions, ample vacation time, and health benefits. And there was no slave trading in the northern ports of Boston, New York and Philadelphia, and the nmorthern mills did not buy enormous quantities of slave products, like cotton, sugar, rice, coffee, and tobacco. DearGod, you stupid, filthy, limousine-liberal scumbags are grotesque and pathetic. Do you truly believe that northern negroes had it better than the Southern negro laborers?!. You cretins are as useless as you are clueless. I only wish we could ship all the ignorant limousine-liberal pigs back to africa like the northern slave-traders did so long ago.

If America is so bad and whites treat non-whites so badly, why is it that so many non-whites clammor to get here. No matter how people got here, they struggled for survival once they did arrive. Happens even today with immigrants (legal and not) working 2 or 3 low paying slave-type jobs just to get by with most helping family left behind. I know immigrants who were high-level politicians and professionals in their own countries who arrive here and are struggling as security guards, taxi drivers, parking lot attendants, etc. Imagine the mental anguish they must be enduring just with that career swing. People do what they must and thank God this country is large and strong enough to withstand it.

What bothers me is when the decendants of slaves act as if something is owed to them because their ancestors were brought here and worked as slaves. If that ancestor slave was so poorly treated, you wouldn't be here today. This country and the white folks here owe you NOTHING. It is that sort of entitlement thinking that drives prejudice. Get a job and be normal without expecting handouts. Most slaves brought and bought here were thought of as an investment. No one abuses an investment. They feed them well and keep them healthy because they want that investment to work for them a long time - and at minimum reproduce. Certainly along the line there was a hot young lady who got the attention of the Master and I don't blame him for taking a little dip there. I'd probably have done the same thing. Even Mr. Lincoln himself couldn't control that in himself.

it must be kind of weird for you frightened and bigoted hillbillies to live in an age where AMERICANS, hell, even VIRGINIANS elect a black president.

but you know what? if you have to go back 150 years ago to find something to feel good about, go right ahead. its not like you have anything of your own to be proud of.

What would really confuse and frighten me is if this black president is REelected. We all can make a mistake now and then but to not learn from it and get this president out will certainly continue to hurt the country.

Another frightening thing is how black Americans will continue to support this black president under any circumstance. If you must support a black man for president, why not choose one who will do better by the country?

Are you confederartes out there trying to tell us that the Southerners had an inalienalbe right to secede? (like the Declaration of Independence says)? Are you also trying to presuade us that Abraham Lincoln did exactly as King George III did in trying maintain the the Union by force? Are you saying that there is nothing anywherein the constitution which prohibits secession?

The state song of Maryland is a Confederate song. "Despot" refers to Lincoln:

"
The despot's heel is on thy shore,
Maryland, My Maryland!
...
Virginia should not call in vain!
Maryland, My Maryland!
She meets her sisters on the plain-
"Sic semper!
...
Huzza! she spurns the Northern scum!
She breathes! she burns! she'll come! she'll come!
Maryland! My Maryland!...
"

With the North winning the war we now have a Federal government involved in every aspect of our lives. A re read of the Constitution affirms the specific powers and duties of the Federal government.

If the country is so right, when California, when the federal as a free country, it will not be set in motion the wheels of the American Civil War. California is a free state (state of the right), a physical limit to how far the West, slavery could spread. This did not sit well in the South...

Plus, slaveowners like Union General Ulysess S. Grant didn't much like it either. Nor did the Union slave states of Maryland. Missouri, Kentucky, Delaware, and West Virginia. Lots of pro-Union slaveowners.

Or, perhaps a better example, and to use Gordon's own example, would be to point out that once you signed a lease, you could never, ever, ever leave. Not ever. And if you tried, you would attacked, beaten and ultimately killed.

And if the south had won?

No one ever asks that question. Lets assume the South won and all its laws were still laws of the land - slavery in 2011 fine and dandy.

Really. Im just wondering if that would make it harder or easier to hate Mexicans, Muslims and the like.

goodtimes-

I never understand when people think that time would stop in 1861, and that slavery would be around in CSA 2011. I am not defending the South, I think Jim Crow laws could still be in effect. But to say that slavery would still be around hurts your cause because it wouldn't.

Well, if slavery were alive in 2011, the Negro crime rate, especially in Richmond and Norfolk areas, would be significantly lower. Negroes were productive and generally peaceful under slavery.

This issue is always misrepresented in terms of slavery. When the war was fought, it was not between "North" and "South", but between two independent countries, the USA and the CSA. And slavery was perfectly legal in both countries.

WOW, THE SOUTH was an aristocracy, the thing thats funny is that a union victory was soooo beneficial to the common man. most of the south needed a union victory. but yet dumb ignorant folks still think the south had this glorious cause. well, just look at the statistics of the differences between the average person in the north and south during that time.

If slavery was/is so good why don't all of you in favor re-instate it? Get your representatives to sponsor a bill to re-instate slavery. The Constitution and Amendments can be changed.

Lets see how that works for you mmmkay

After the war, Jefferson Davis, the President of the Confederacy, was arrested and placed in prison prior to a trial. The trial was never held, because the chief justice of the Supreme Court, Mr. Salmon Portland Chase, informed President Andrew Johnson that if Davis were placed on trial for treason the United States would lose the case because nothing in the Constitution forbids secession. That is why no trial of Jefferson Davis was held, despite the fact that he wanted one.

So was secession treason? The answer is clearly No.
