What is the best you remember, I'd say "St. Valentines Day Massacre and Scarface".

The Godfather I, is the best, followed by GF II, which has the single best performance in the Genre', Robert Dinero's portrayal of the young Vito Corleone.

White Heat and The Public Enemy with James Cagney are both classics and great. More recently, Public Enemies isn't too bad. The death scene with Dillinger is pretty awesome.

+1 on the Cagney films, Bogart, Cagney, Robinson, and the guy who played in the original "Scarface" were legendary. Also, the actor who used to always flip a coin, I can't recall his name, great actors all.

The Godfather, and not only because of the story, but also due to how realistic it actually is.

I also liked American Gangster, and Public Enemies.

Donnie Brasco is a great flick, and I've read that it portrayed mob life more accurately than most movies. I also love alot of the movies listed above. Another good one is "Things To Do In Denver When You're Dead". Not a mafia movie, just a quirky, gangster crime caper (anytime Christopher Walken and Steve Buscemi play bad guys, it's automatically a good film).

Agree, that's a great movie, and it seems like few people ever heard of it for some reason.

I think Goodfellas is my favorite, but it's tough because GF 1 and 2 are so awesome. DeNiro as young Vito Corleone is the best he's ever done, and I love when he goes back to Sicily for payback.

Just too many to list. Donnie Brasco, Casino, Gangs of New York, etc.

Some films have a few really good scenes but overall are kind of blah. A Bronx Tale is worth it just for the scener where the biker gang picks a fight in a mafia bar, to the tune of the Beatles' Come Together:

don't mean to be a cock and step on your post, but man, i *hated* that film.

pretty good recent crime picture - not sure if it's strictly a "gangster" movie - is mesrine part i, killer instinct, currently available on Netflix instant watch.

some very kick ass stuff in that. great performance by vincent cassell, as closely modeled on the real-life french criminal mesrine.

the several prison escapes - all true - are mind-boggling. particularly the one in canada.

I actually watched this again earlier, first time I've seen it since the 90s, back when it was a big hit at Cannes and considered a rip-off of Tarantino.

Really different film. An examination of life & death set among likeable gangsters. I forgot Christopher Lloyd was in it. There's a scene with him and Andy Garcia that is kinda touching. And I lol'd again when the Treat Williams character jumped out to kill the assassin.

Under-rated movie, IMO.

I don't think Road to Perdition comes to mind as a gangster film because of Tom Hanks, Sam Mendes and the whole art house movie feel of it. But I like it...

I can understand that. It has a very stoic, film noir feel to it. It's not like Casino or Good Fellas where it crosses into the absurd. The Hanks character is doomed from the start. It's kind of like watching a funeral. But I do like it, still.

i may give it another try. i'd *like* to like it, to tell you the truth. but it just didn't play for me.

you mentioned white heat.

i love all the scenes with cagney, but the non-cagney scenes are very flat, and kind of crappy.

but the cagney stuff is so good that it hardly matters.

high sierra is a favorite of mine. it's not as hard-edged as white heat, but it's a very solid picture.

I've been debating about posting crime dramas and film-noir that don't really fall into the "gangster" category. For instance, both The Asphalt Jungle and The Killing are fantastic crime dramas. But they aren't technically "gangster films" along the lines of the Godfather or Casino. I love good film-noir.

While White Heat might be uneven, the thing with the movie is almost all of Cagney's scenes have become iconic...

non-us gangster film: city of god.

the film doesn't quite come off as a whole - it's a pretty ambitious, near-epic story - but i thought it had some very good stuff in it.

on the film noir front, the maltese falcon may be my all-time favorite movie.

asphalt jungle - excellent.

i'd rank the killing a notch beneath that, but still very good.

love touch of evil, though it's somewhat uneven.

pickup on south street is a favorite.

night and the city, also with widmark, very good, but it's such an excruciating bummer of a story that i find it hard to watch.

rififi is a film i discovered only recently. really outstanding, suspenseful heist film.

Godfather 3 was awful. I imagine the trailer voice-over going something like this:

"Michael Corleone THOUGHT he could get away from the mafia life. But when a conspiracy involving the Catholic church jeopardizes his attempt to leave his criminal past behind, he's going to have to mafia harder than ever."

Not to mention the "I'm in love with my cousin" sub-plot.

Regarding GF III, there has to be a law passed that bans hotshot directors in their 20s who happen to make some of the all-time great movies from coming back 20 or 30 years later and fucking everything up with a terrible sequel. The biggest offenders are Spielberg and Lucas. I just hope to God Coppola doesn't get financing for an Apocalypse Now sequel.

I agree on Scarface. It's nothing but an overrated B-movie. King of New York I can't comment on because I only saw it once long ago, but I can say it didn't blow me away. New Jack City though was pretty good.

Did anyone mention Miller's Crossing yet? I liked that one. Haven't seen that one in a long time either though.

I thought "Bad Streets" a 70s flick with deNero was good, one of those films with a small budget, that had the ability to draw a viewer in. Like Spielberg's "Duel" with Dennis Weaver.

Ever seen the car chase in The Seven Ups. Maybe not as stylistic as "Bullitt" but pretty damn exciting. Almost like it more than "The French Connection" car chase.

King of New York is great fun. Not in the same class as Godfather, of course, but seeing Walken be a complete gangster and his right hand man is a younger Larry Fishburne, what's not to like? Bonus points because Walken blows away that annoying ginger asshole from CSI Miami.

+1

West side Story, although not technically a gangster movie, does have the gang element in it. I grew up in Hell's Kitchen and the concept is pretty accurate, they were gangs left and right, many years ago.

Carlito's Way was a pretty good one, too.

I like how Southpark parodied the whole scene where the guy in the wheelchair with the wire is begging for his life and saying how he's pathetic and he shits in his pants.

Please provide link to the south Park parody of Carlito's Way. I could use a laugh.
I mentioned "Once Upon a Time in America" first

You should probably search for it on Comedy Central's site. It was the "Gay Fish" episode where Kanye West tortures Carlos Mencia for making a joke about him. Mencia begs for pity, saying he has no dick, and that he stole the joke from Cartman.

Yeah Krays was good first time I saw it, but I tried to watch it again a few years later and for some reason didn't like it as much.
