The Bad Old Days
Date: December 07, 2010 10:36PM

Everyone talks about "the good old days." But no one ever talks about the "bad old days." The shit you used to have to put up with that you don't have to today. For instance, when I started out in the working world, virtually no one had a cell phone. If you wanted to make a phone call, this was the shit you had to put up with...

PE-297-0101.jpg

...Before I had an ATM card, if you wanted to go to a bank you had to put up with this shit to get $20 out of your account...

standing_line_bank.jpg

...And if you wanted to go to a store on a Sunday evening, chances are you would run into this...

Eh.....Sunday = football so I really don't give a shit (at least in fall). Other times it meant baseball.

Of course, back then the networks had good programming and reliable news. Not every show was a reality show or single elimination competition show.

I used to love messing with the pay phones. I'd always dial the call back code, then hang the phone up, and it would start ringing like crazy. I was bored at my high school one day, while waiting for my ride, so I did it to all six payphones outside the main lobby. Lol, people ran outside and were frantically trying to get them to quit.

Remember when you made plans to meet your friends at a bar or a restaurant, and if they didn't show, oh fucking well. No cell phones, no way to get in touch.

Remember when there was no GPS and no google maps. If you wanted to get somewhere you had to read an actual map and write directions down. And if you got lost, your best bet was to ask a gas station attendant or find a pay phone.

Remember when you wanted to find out any fact about ANYTHING and there was no internet, no search engine, no wikipedia, no IMDB, no lyrics look-up sites, no nothin'. If you were lucky you could find something in an encyclopedia that cost your parents a fortune and which had more errors than wikipedia and was out of date the minute it was printed. Or maybe you could go to your local library and look something up in the card catalogue or the vertical file, and dig through microfiche slides of fifty-year-old newspapers.

I remember my mom trying to reheat roast beef and mashed potatoes on a conventional stove before we had a microwave. Nasty. I also remember having to wait an hour for a TV dinner to cook and then the metal tray burning the shit out of my hands. I also remember being shit out of luck if you missed a TV show because there was no VCR or DVR.

No. What I am saying is that the tray was hotter than shit the entire time you were trying to eat the food. You would burn the sides of your hand when you were trying to eat from the thing.

Sure, when you had three or four channels. Now it's a fucking nightmare when you can't find the remote.

My mother in law had an old portable tv that she gave us for our
kitchen. When the kids came home from school and saw it they said
"Where's the remote?" When I showed them how to operate it they
laughed and thought it was stupid.

Then we got this.

You would push a button and the click sound produced a certain frequency that the set would pick up and do the corresponding command. There were no batteries it just worked off the clicking sound. All you could do is change channels and adjust volume if I remember right. Neighbors would come over and marvel at it.

I had a AMD 386 computer with a "turbo" button that kicked the clock speed up from like 10 Hz to a screaming 40 Hz! I never understood why anyone would turn off the turbo button; none of the games me and my friends played would run on a 10 MHz machine anyway.

Speaking of DOS, anyone else remember when Windows was just an expensive and unnecessary program for people too lazy to use a command line?

Loading games/"apps" on a apple II via cassette.

First computer I ever built paid $25/meg for memory. Maxed out motherboard (8MB) cost $200 for RAM.

Strip mall retail stores that "rented" Software.

The 1.2 meg floppy! for that matter the 5 1/4.

Installing an OS or large program only to have disk X of 15 crap out.

Hacking the directTV cards. alt.dss.hack anyone?

Internet is a portal for good but used religiously as a portal for bad, even evil. If you were aware, and you probably were, that some stores were closed on Sundays you'd prepare for it. Not sit and scream at the wife for it, like you probably do. There were better places to go back then and things to do. Didn't worry about the crazy liberals back then.

RIP Landon Wade Bowers aka Dane Bramage aka Ying Ko. Who ended up with his hot wife?

Re: The Bad Old Days

Said he had bought a Ruger single action Blackhawk big bore handgun a .45 Colt

What happened to him , if this is him , if not why did you post a name and how do you know who posted as Ying Ko or the other names

" Early morning on October 10th, Landon Bowers, 29, endured a fatal car crash in Culpeper as he was headed to work. Landon was driving a 2001 Ford Ranger when he ran off the road and struck a tree. His life was taken away unexpectedly and has caused great grief to all whom had the chance to get to know Landon."

BUT how can we know thats him. I wont cite where I saw this obit tribute . I engaged Ying Ko here on FXU many times and found him to be a semi libtard on the 2nd but a decent person and he did say he bought that Ruger

RIP and peace to Landon's family in any event, he seems to have been a great fun guy to know , a real tragedy he died so young .
