Putin waited until Trump’s second term, because he expected Trump would provide far less support for Ukraine. Trump would no longer have to play politics to get re-elected and would have free reign to fracture the NATO response. Trump had already made public statements about exiting NATO and had already expressed displeasure at Ukraine’s unwillingness to help the Trump campaign with bogus investigations. Waiting for Trump to take a second term was a perfect strategy. Until Trump lost, and failed to overthrow the election. So now he’s stuck with a very resolute United States and an overwhelming NATO response that will result in the treaty’s expansion. Heck, Trump just admitted a few weeks ago that he would have allowed Russia to take parts of Ukraine.

Putin basically banked on a loser and now he’s paying for it.

Yeah Putin waited for Biden to become president because he knew Joe would cooperate 100% with NATO and allow billions in military aid, rather than attack while Trump was in office because Trump publicly admitted he would allow Russia to just take Ukraine territory.
