Simple. Like the Chinese, they saw that Communism didn't work. So, at least, economically, that part of the world has converted to capitalism, although sometimes without a democratic form of government.

Right wingers love to throw around the terms "socialist" and "communist" willy nilly without really understand what they are. Vietnam and China are neither in the textbook sense of the word and have not been for quite sometime. They both have adopted command economies that adhere to certain principles of a market economy. China specifically refers to their system as "socialism with Chinese characteristics".

The only true communist countries today are Cuba and North Korea and even they have started to adopt certain elements of a free market, if for no other reason, to ensure they have at least some access to foreign currency.
