Look at those clips again. Meade was not going anywhere against his will. The Deputies were basically just blocking the crowd while shepherding him away.
Meade is a shrewd character. He made his protest while obeying all the laws, generated media attention, then he got a free escort and ride home. Mission accomplished. Meade's charge was arguably the most effective law-abiding protest of the entire year -- and also a great publicity stunt.
