From everything Meade has said about his father's and mother's relationship, he certainly is describing the household he grew up in.
He really spends far too much time ruminating on the causes and conditions of homosexuality. Meade seems to show no signs of sexual orientation one way or the other. If he actually turns out to be gay, he will wait for his father to die before he comes out. If he comes out at all.
Who really cares if a forty-something person comes out?
Especially one that looks like this:
