Because the mob can't intimidate witnesses if they don't know who they are. It most be driving Trump crazy that he can't name call and intimidate the whistleblower.
I'm sure Trump and company have teams of private investigators trying to find out who the whistleblower is. The problem is Trump can't publicly attack the whistleblower without the name being made public. If the person is really in the intelligence community that person might be able to completely hide the identity.
