Doubtful. The dems have Hawaii locked up. The VP is almost always from a purple state that the party is trying to swing. That's why Hillary picked Kaine. He has no constituency or standing in the party or the country other than representing what was then a swing state.

Doubtful. The dems have Hawaii locked up. The VP is almost always from a purple state that the party is trying to swing. That's why Hillary picked Kaine. He has no constituency or standing in the party or the country other than representing what was then a swing state.

So GW Bush picked Cheney because he was afraid either Texas or Wyoming might go Democratic? Was Al Gore concerned about losing Connecticut? And I am sure Obama and McCain picked their VP candidates because they wanted to shore up those 3 electoral votes in Delaware and Alaska.
VP candidates are chosen to strengthen the ticket. Strengthening it geographically is certainly one way to do that, but it isn't the only one. Pence made more sense as Trump's VP candidate if Pence is looked at as a social conservative than if he is looked at as a favorite son of Indiana. Tulsard is from relatively safe Hawaii but depending on who the Democratic presidential candidate is she could strengthen the ticket in other ways.
