How often are supposed to replace your surge protectors?

I’ve got three at home. One that’s about 15 years old, one 12 years old and one 8. Am I supposed to replace them periodically? Do older ones use up more electricity than older ones?

Test them once a year. If they don’t trip....you have the answer.

They're so cheap on Amazon I just replace them if they look old and ugly.

While we’re on the subject, how often are you supposed to replace those?

I test mine to make sure they are still good before replacing them. Take a butter knife or fork and stick it in the socket while they are turned on. If you get electrocuted, they are still good.

Every two years is what is usually when you are advised to toss em out, but really, I think they are still efficient for five. Technology changes and using old power strips isn't cost efficient when pairing with newer technology.

This way is not accurate. You should hold it under the shower.
