If I had to choose between an atheist who chooses to concentrate on the process needed to land a plane and a religious guy who starts praying instead, I would choose the atheist.

As for the whole "miracle" thing, I think of how Jon Stewart might put it. The miracle was the freak accident of the birds knocking out the engines.

Lately, I've noticed your contemptuous attitude towards people who believe in God (or even a god). I was just trying to assess the boundaries of this contempt.

So it's not the idea of an afterlife that bothers you... It's the arbitrary, black-and-white, conditions that dictate how you are "supposed" to live your life?

I understand how you could think that... Let me ask you this question, however. In a drunk driving accident, do you blame the car or the drunk driver?... Do you take it one step further and blame the alcohol?

In a shooting death, is it the gun or the shooter that is responsible?

I guess then that all of the Apollo-Era NASA Astronauts were incapable of handling one of the most dangerous endeavours ever, because they were religious:

Oh boy, wouldn't the ACLU have a seizure over this now-a-days.

Tell it to Frank Borman, Jim Lovell (Who btw, Commanded Apollo 13, and he directly took part in turning a Disaster into a great moment in American History), and Bill Anders.

I don't have contempt for religious people so much as I have contempt for the institution itself. Most religious folks were indoctrinated at a very young age and told never to question their faith. That's pretty much what happened to me, but when I entered my teens, I became interested in science and history and it forced me to question things. When I asked the priest any philosophical questions, he and the nuns would get cross and eventually got rid of me before I was confirmed.

Are you referring to the "black and white" conditions pertaining to the bible or quran? I'm against any rules that prevent people from living a happy and productive life, including sexual and gender orientation. If religion is your way of achieving that, than have at it. However, I feel it's effect is not unlike using drugs to escape reality and don't think it's a particularly rational choice.

Maybe the accident was a result of someone wanting to escape reality.

Many organized religions are simply businesses. They offer a service, then exploit people's fears in order to make a profit. I understand your distrust in organized religions.

> Most religious folks were indoctrinated at a very

This is not exclusive to organized religions. This happens all around us on a daily basis... In schools... at work... in politics...

You cannot rely on any organization to encourage free thought... the organization would become disorganized.

I thought you may have had a religious upbringing...

Was it then that you decided there couldn't be a god?

> Are you referring to the "black and white"

You think people should be able to do whatever it takes to make them happy? Does this apply to rapists, murderers, and pedophiles?

> If religion is your way of
> achieving that, than have at it. However, I feel

Don't you think reality is a hard thing to define? I often wonder how real the concept of reality is...

Would you consider the effect of music a drug-like escape of reality? How about reading books or watching TV?

Is meditation an escape from reality?

> and don't think it's a particularly
> rational choice.

Are you saying that faith, in anything, is irrational?
Do you, by any chance, feel superior to these irrational people?

> Maybe the accident was a result of someone wanting
> to escape reality.

So you're belief is that no one is responsible for a drunk driving accident? You think they are all victims of a desire to escape reality?

That "matter" issue bothers me.

Make sure you're not buried near an industrial park. You wouldn't want to come back as a septic tank.

I have to say I was about to change the channel because this thread was starting to drag on unitl Alias swooped in wearing the FU super hero cape and picked this thread back up by the bra straps.
Thanks Alias!
Also Scientology is nothing but a BUISINESS set up designed to MAKE RICH PEOPLE FEEL LESS GUILTY ABOUT BEING RICH!
The "CHURCH" collects dues and tells you you've fulfilled your obligation to humanity, now go home and be a good "THETAN" because all these "PROFANES" around you are not fully human like your Godly self.
So keep jumping up and down on couches and staring up at everybody from behind your big Jewish nose.
Tom Criuse is a sorry-shit actor.

What you mean to say is that I have no imaginary friend in the sky. My imagination knows no bounds.

I wouldn't exactly call it a frog.

I take some comfort in knowing you won't come back, but the matter that makes up your body will stay around forever. It's very possible that parts may end up making those things.

Why would I care what my matter becomes? I'll be dead and some people need septic tanks.

I thought that after I died, my whole body would just fly up to heaven.
And, I thought the reason I've never bumped into a dead flying body was that dead people became invisible while in flight.

I guess I'm just a little picky.

teh fuck i ain't.

dig the big write-up i got the other day:

[news.bbc.co.uk]

Mr Ffxu Super Troll (aka "aol dude") said that he had begun the zipper hack last summer when he spent three weeks analysing the hardware.

After a long break, he spent a further two weeks cracking his underwear, which he described as a "very secure system".

He said that he was not yet ready to reveal the full details of the hack but said that it was "5% hardware, 95% software, and 100% brawny".

Exposing the system would allow people to "install" other "operating systems" on "the console" and play "homemade games," he said.

In addition, he said, the hack would allow him to perform imaginary games using his own handmade "joystick".

"Talk about the pursuit of happiness!" he squealed.
