You're not equating Meade with Edgar Allen Poe are you?
Poe was considered by most of his friends and colleagues as a wonderful and warm person and was actually quite the ladies man. He went through a lot of grief in his life and many of his loved ones died from tuberculosis (The Red Death) at a young age (his wife for one). If he was creepy, he had good reason to be.
Read Annabel Lee one day and see how similar he and Meade really are.
