The headline is "US weighs in on Anglo-French D-Day kerfuffle."

http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20090529/pl_afp/britainfranceroyalshistorywwiius_20090529220525

Kerfuffle.

I am moving to the wilderness of Montana to preserve the little bit of intellect I still have left after living in a world that tolerates news agencies using baby talk in their headlines. It was nice knowing you all, but I'm going somewhere where this will never happen to my brain again.

What exactly is a kerfuffle?

Kerfuffle is a British colloquialism . It's not "baby talk" To wit:

Kerfuffle

Main Entry: ker·fuf·fle Listen to the pronunciation of kerfuffle
Pronunciation: \kər-ˈfə-fəl\
Function: noun
Etymology: alteration of carfuffle, from Scots car- (probably from Scottish Gaelic cearr wrong, awkward) + fuffle to become disheveled
Date: 1946
chiefly British : disturbance, fuss

That's supposed to mean something I guess but I've lost interest. You are far too dull-witted to make make this worth the effort.

The article describes a diplomatic dispute of a very trivial, almost silly nature.

Kerfuffle is an apt word to describe the incident.

By contrast, if kerfuffle were used to headline an article about D-Day, that would be wildly inappropriate.

But that's not the case here.

P.S. I've been hired by Fairfax Underground to address grammatical errors, stylistic blunders, and the like, in an attempt to raise the tone of the board. I will try to step lightly, having been advised of the tender sensibilities of not a few of the posters here. I look forward to working with all of you to make Fairfax Underground a more inviting and delightsome forum.

Credentials? I don't need no stinking credentials.

But since you insist, I refer you to the following:

As for Rambo, you're a natural-born writer. Any "edjykashun" would just stunt your native style, like trying to change Stan Musial's "in the bucket" swing, or teaching a dog to walk on its hind legs. I recommend you remain just as you are. Never change.

There, professor, I fixed it for you. It reads a little better now.

I'm also not sure if the posts on this site are long enough to be worth "perusing." You'd probably be better off just scanning the posts and pointing out spelling errors; you'll be able to get back to the grill quicker.

Heh heh, Iron Chef.

Today's ingredient...."Stewed Eel Testes"

Fuqui-San?

Yes, Ota?

Iron Chef is coating the eel testes in a batter made up of wild boar spunk and tempura.

What an interesting combination!

-- TASTING --

Token "actress": Ooh, the eel testes are like taking a bite and floating on to a big cloud in the sky while looking at children playing while unicorns slide down a rainbow and daisies poof out of my bottom."
