On the edge! and 1/2 inch! A little wood screw can give you incredable traction and help you avoid falls and injuries. Golf shoes or special slip on traction devices will work but few have them.
I used to be in a field where I had to work in all kinds of weather and came upon this for ice. It works well outside but causes scratches inside. I used the hex head ones with a magnetic head.

Why magnetic heads? Does that help you walk up the side of buildings with steel siding???
