NOVA is part of the South- and thats not a bad thing!
Posted by: TrueVirginian ()

Spunky's post really hit home for me. I was thikning about how people come to see the South as being negative or Southern as a minus, not a plus. In reality- bein' Southern is a positive!

Have you ever heard of Northern charm? The South is the last bastillion of grace, manners, hospitality, and refinement. Just because NOVAns today want to be rude, takcy, ill mannered, and money grubbing, does nothing to change Northern Virginia's Southern heritage.

Y'all should embrace being Southern. I am from Danville, VA and I never understood why Northern Virginians try to bury their Southernness. Its kinda sad, really. Y'all are Southern, sorry. Nothing wrong with it.

How so? "Being southern" implies a lot of backwardness. In thought, in intellect, in nostalgia, and in history.

I think I would rather not be proud of a heritage of slavery, of rebellion, of Selma and Montgomery Ala., of Central High School, of Emmet Till, of lynchings and beatings, of segregation, of discrimination, and all the rest of the things that the south really represents.

What? There's no "Northern Charm"? I guess the north doesn't have to spin itself to look good. In fact, I think the major difference is that most of us just view ourselves as being Americans, citizens of the United States. We don't divide ourselves into factions, attribute our greatness or acknowledge our weaknesses based on the geographical regions we were born in or currently reside in.

I guess the common folklore in the hollows is that only southerners have manners and social graces. I guess that doesn't take into consideration WWF and NASCAR, now does it? Or lynchings? (I guess those uppity negroes asked for it, y'all were just bein' polite?)

I was born in Alabama. Thankfully my father received PCS orders to a more enlightened place shortly after my birth. I've lived all over the US and in a few overseas bases around the world. Both of my parents are of "northern" heritage, anyways, so at best I was born to "carpetbaggers" in the south. Thank God.

The reason you never understood why people in Northern Virginia don't cling to some nostalgic image of "being southerners" is because you have a provincial and narrow view of the world. Most of the people in this area are not from "the south", they are from all over the country, and once you get out west, people don't think about north and south. Hell, even in "the north" they don't think that way. The rest of us have moved on over the past 140 years, and look forward instead of back.

But, if that's all you've got, then stick with it. If the only way you can gather up enough pride in yourself to keep on living is to attribute geography to your own personal worth and value to society, I guess we should let you run with that.

Wow, Bob, your ignorance is astounding. You think that every place north of the Mason Dixon line is enlightened? Do you know how backwards people are in places such as Upstate New York or Western Mass, or New England? And dont forget the provincial Midwest

The South may not be perfect, but its sure of a heck of a lot better than most places. What Northern cities could ever match the beauty and charm of Richmond, Charleston, or Savannah? The hipness of Nashville or Memphis?

People like Elvis sure dont come from Conetticut. You consider yourself well traveled, yet you make sweeping generalizations which are cliched and inaccurate. And maybe so doth I, but at least what I say is more relevant.

Too= Northern Virginia's history is a Southern one, and people like Col. Mosby and General Robert E. Lee walked its grounds. We should be proud of that rich legacy. I am enthralled by the beauty of the area. I dont think Novans will ever own up to their Virginia heritage, much less their Southerness. Thats a plumb shame.

I posted 3 different posts to this thread and since Gravis was the last one noted as having posted here I would tend to believe it was him that deleted my posts. I don't believe anyone else has had such a difficult time as I with exercising their right to freedom of speech as I. You damn Nazi! I believe we have better men and women then you fighting and dying for the right of this freedom which your fat ass has probably never fought nothing more then women or a fat rat, you spineless worthless rat. I have had posts and threads deleted here and now I see who most likely did it. I have also had someone posting under my name, there are laws against all this shit, so keep it up if you think you can. You squirrelly characters give humans a bad name by thinking you can actually hide behind the internet screen, but guess what you can't. You need your balls busted, but since you have none, I'll have to find somethin else!

But one thing for sure, I know now you're afraid or you wouldn't go around feelin' like you needed to delete anything! Coward! This is the only way cowards fight, you and your nazi buddies are NUTS, and that's the only NUTS you'll ever have!

You can see by this entry that Gravis was the last one to post, but there's no post for him, now that's really odd, except for the FU! All sorts of shit goes on here!

Ferfux, think about the two individuals that represent southern pride on this site (Spunky and Meade) and then ask yourself those questions again.

i believe spunky is being farcical and ironical. Meade on the other hand suffers from a sever case of nostalgia for a time and place that didnt actually exist except in stories and fantasies of the way the southerners wished it would be. Stories that got exaggerated as time went on to diffuse the hurt and wounds of the severe beatdown the South received from the Civil war.

Many ignorant people somehow think the Confederate Battle Flag is a racist one, because it was used by the ill fated Klu Klux Klan, The irony is that the flag itself has nothing to do with racism, but it was the cross of St.Andrew. Many of the Southern people were ready to have their own country and wanted to establish freedom It had nothing to do with a slavery trade, but against heavy tarriffs and a massive Government- pretty much of what we face today.

The flag then no more represents a racial issue than the American flag, But its meaning is still controversial. Some see it as racist.Others merely as treason. But the Southerners who died for their beloved homeland just saw it as defending their homes and nothing more.

All my Ancestors died for that flag, and I respect that. I dont go flying it on my car or throw it in people's faces.

For I consider myself first and foremost , an American. However, that doesnt mean I cant be proud also of my Southern heritage.

What Alias said was largely correct. I find that its not Northerners that I don't like, its the sometimes pushy, northern attitude. Some of my best friends are Yankees.

NOVA may have been Southern 4o years ago- but in 2009, no. Its not the South anymore. Its at best "Southern Light" and thats only found in little pockets here and there. Lets wake up and smell the sweet tea. Even geographically, its just barely the South, and I can remember as long as 20 years ago people were saying its no longer part of the South, or even Virginia for that matter.

I think of NOVA as Mid-Atlantic and it has both Northern and Southern traits- noawadays much more leaning to the Northern ones. It doesnt have the terrible weather the Northeast has, but lets face it, its just not far enough South in the Contemporary sense. And I say this even about the whole state of Virginia, although I do agree Richmond is Southern and many areas in Southern Virginia.

We were part of the "Old South" but guess what? THe War is OVer. Its not 1865. Lets move on. I welcome change in Northern Virginia and the whole Commonwealth. Shoot, I dont even consider NC part of the South anymore the way things are going. These days there really is no longer a South, just East Coast and West Coast and Middle America.

Virginia voted for Obama in 2008. Not only is NoVA no longer part of the south, neither is much of the rest of the state. Get used to it. Your "lost cause" is truly lost.

If you don't like it, move to Mississippi.

Think again, just because you say it is, doesn't make it so. This is and especially NC is southern and there are a lot of those who would disagree with you and who are out living that life style now, rather then here listening to your fingers talk some worthless babble. You are summing up what you are around which is who you are, not the salt of the earth hard working country people from outside the metro area. When you speak of NC you must only be focused on the larger cities and not the outlaying areas, because that area is definitely southern.

I assume you aren't southern, none of the last few posters because if you were you would know better of what you speak. You should know your subject before making broad generalizations which are so obviously incorrect and reflect negatively on your judgment and leaves you coming up short. You should stick to what you know, which I know for you is very little.

You couldn't even figure out the truth about the buffalo, so you obviously couldn't lead your way out of a paper bag on your own. Common sense was one huge advantage the south had over the north, which kept the north on the run for years, with less provisions and troops. The north wore the south down, our men were the best and so were our leaders, and that will always set us apart. Additionally most of the fighting was fought in the south where southerns were terrorized by yankees and that's not easily forgotten. Would you like knowing your great-great-grandmother died with open sores from being pistol whipped across her face? Your only well drunk dry? Everything you owned taken and destroyed and you never owned slaves?

There should be no more wars.

Actually, when in the company of people who didn't know
I was from the south, one of their favorite things was
to randomly bash the south, saying the most awful and
untrue things. It was quite shocking to me.

Virginia went BARELY BLUE. 17 counties out of 180 went blue. And thats because of NOVA and Hampton Roads where most people reside.

If you go by that logic, then NC isnt the South either because they voted for Obama too. And even areas of the Deep South were blue in some counties.

Much of the rest of the state is Southern. Especially Farmville, Danville- Southside. The Richmond area has a Southern feel that rivals areas of Georgia, Ive had people from the Deep South tell me its home for them

To a degree Charlottesville is Southern, even with its increased transienience, and liberalsm. The Shenandoah Valley is very Southern too.

So only pockets of Virginia are becoming un-Southern. You lose.

That would be "Old South," to be exact.

The 100+ counties with 30 people each voted for McCain.

I would agree that Virginia is not a solid blue state- not even in this election. Its actually more purple, like NC.

The Census Beareau still puts the entire state of Virginia as in the South.

It is safe to say , that geographically , Nova is part of the South, but its really not part of the Contemporary South in terms of its attitudes and lifestyles, unless you live in some place like Leesburg or Mannassas.

Hello Realist,

I too am a realist but prefer my name presently instead. Thank you

for the endorsement, although I knew I was right all along. It was just mind

over matter. Yes, I'll be your friend, no need to embarrass yourself by asking.

Spunky Realist, no I don't like the ring of that...friends we'll be, Ok?

Done...good-nite moon! Wasn't it beautiful this past weekend? Did you see Venus?

Julie E. Flanagan, 17, home-schooled, Charlotte: Truth needs to be taught in the classrooms of today. Evolution cannot be backed up scientifically in any sort of realm. While creation might be hard to explain it does have credible and truthful parts to it. Creation by intelligent design is the one and only truth to how the world was made. It doesn’t have to be taught straight from the Bible. But when you look at the facts and results of tests, creation by intelligent design is the only one that stands true and without any holes. Truth should be taught, therefore, I believe creationism should be taught.

WTF? Evolution cannot be backed up scientifically?

When she says creationism shouldn't be taught straight from the bible, but more on the facts and results of tests, which facts and which tests is she talking about? The carbon dating that proves the earth is only 6,000 years old? The fact that the world was created in 6 days?

I suppose they shouldn't teach that the world is round, either, or that the earth orbits the sun, because in fact the sun orbits the earth? No, wait, the sun can't orbit the earth since the earth isn't round anyway. It really just goes away when we can't see it, and if we're lucky and don't piss off God, the sun will come back again tomorrow. The sun rising each morning is proof that God created the earth, how can you argue with scientific facts like that?

I only have one thing to say to people who claim that evolution is just a theory -- "how do you explain antimicrobial resistance, is that just another myth created by those crazy scientists? Bacteria evolve resistance to antibiotics through natural selection. Evolution has been proven, period."

Evolution is a lie from Satan. Its also a faux Science that is anochronistic in many ways. People just want to find an excuse not to acknowledge our Lord

Fairfax WAS, and isn't now.

As far as the rest of VA - you can bet that new jersey governnor did everything possible to fuck over VA to make it "part of the north / democrat / thief culture"

There was one NJ politician (no money in life except sucking off government money) who BOUGHT A FARM IN VA using GOVERNMENT LOAN, then later sold it for a profit (senator or congressman still in office)

That's what goes on with democrats.

Southerners are more likely to be nice to your face to a point then more likely to be hateful. New Englanders are less likely to kiss your ass but more likely to protect minorities or those in need. There are rabbid racists in both North and South but many many more people wishing to protect minorities in the North.

Overall the North is somewhat rougher the South puts on a sweet face but is defined by hatred of outsiders.
