Which is better in the long run becoming a auto mechanic or accountant?

Recently graduated from high school. Which career path is better in the long run when it comes to salary? Going to a community college, get a associates degree in automotive technology and find work at a car dealership as a auto mechanic. Or transfer to a four year college and obtain a bachelor's in accounting and possibly go on for a CPA.

You will be working more quickly as a mechanic obviously.

If I were in your shoes, I would do the accounting, easier on your knuckles and knees.

Plus, if you already know some car fixitz you can always pick up a little extra scratch doing some small repairs for family, friends etc without certification.

I know how hard it is for young people today and I want to help. Just ask my grandson, Spaulding. He and I are regular pals. Are you my pal..."Mr. Scholarship Winner"?

When the worldwide $770 trillion dollar derivatives bubble bursts the bond, equity and housing markets are going to implode. The wealth loss across what remains of the middle class will be severe.

Get over the notion that earning a piece of paper is going to translate into being paid well in a smooth career path. Those days are gone.

Check out Charles Hugh Smith's blog, OfTwoMinds. current posts and archives.

Relatively few people need an accountant. A larger slice of the population needs a good auto tech.

Two good examples from my own experience: KC Auto near the VFD in Burke. Zion Road Exxon on 123.

Before you commit to either talk to people who are doing it. Ask them if they were 20 years old, knowing what the know now, would they do it again.

Whatever you do, don't sign up to be oshitstain's cannon fodder.

Walk dogs and mow lawns if you must but don't become cannon fodder.

Accounting is going almost entirely automated.

The high powered software suites available nowadays require just two lackeys: a data input puncher that knows minimal accounting and gets paid minimally, and a controller or CFO that interprets and/or edits the results for reporting to upper management.

The only growth fields in accounting are in auditing and forensic accounting, in which true accounting geeks are hired to untangle the web of lies and distortions the first group of lackeys created.

Auto body techs get paid better than most mechanics. Cars run well nowadays but people still wreck them...

I cant understand why anyone would want to be an accountant. You would be spending decades of your life trapped in a office or worse yet a cubicle doing boring mostly mindless repetitive tasks. I guess some people think that being stuck in an office every day is a good thing but I would rather be out and about, going to different places and solving complex real life problems and issues.
One of the happiest guys I know is a copier repair guy. He makes about 90k and gets a company vehicle to tool around in and he works just about anywhere you could imagine. He will work in a store or a bank or a prison or a car dealership or a law office or a funeral home or whatever. He is going new places and meeting new people all the time. You might want to think about something like that.

My brother is a auto mechanic. He earns about $35/hr.

I am an accountant (+CPA) and I earn about $102/hr.

He's three years younger than I and we're mid-to-late 40's.

My education cost a whole lot more than his ($100k+ v. $25k) and took longer (5 yrs. v. 2 yrs.).

I chose the right path for me, and he's happy as a clam.

The question is, what's the right path for you?

Two things you need to ask yourself: 1) Do you enjoy studying, sitting in class, exams, reading text books, etc? 2) Will you be happy sitting in an office every day, going to meetings, working with computers, potentailly having to sell business & work with clients?

If the answer to either of thos questions is "no", do not pursue a career in accounting.

Quality of life: I work 50 - 60 hrs./week. My brother: 40 - 45.

I live in Fairfax, he lives in Prince william.

I vacation in Europe, he drives to Ocean City.

My kids are in private school, my nephews are in public.

My wife has a career similar to mine, my sister-in-law is receptionist.

Food for though.
